    Hey, yeah, I'd have liked them deeper, but actually quite like it for this as space marines are meant to be pretty big. I didn't make the base boards with trenches in mind, think I mentioned that. I would have done something different with the wooden boarder too, as that did get in the way. 😀

    The only thing I'd have wanted from this video is one last glamour shot showing a more zoomed out angle with the minis actually on it! Otherwise, absolutely awesome build, these are the kinds of boards I love watching being played on, and playing on myself! See too many flat tables or mats nowadays and I really miss these kind of tables they'd have at the local Games Workshop when I was a kid Great video, might steal the process and do it myself when I get some time ;)

    Straight lines are a bit of a no-no in trench design, as the blast from an explosion will travel long the trench; also any enemy getting into the system can produce devastating fire by firing down the trench. For this reason all trenches were made in a series of zig-zags.

    Very nice board, but in the future use 90 degree turns. This is because it will block/hinder the shockwaves from blasts.. Your trench would now direct the wave straight to two different areas.. command post and an ammo dump. :)

    Great project and video! Tip: For more realistic timber texture on the coffee stirrers, I find using a sharp (not used much) hacksaw/metal-saw blade is best as you get really fine grooves on the wood and they come up really well during washing and dry brushing. Any sharp saw blade will do as you pass over the wood multiple times but the hacksaw blade is the most readily available and finest.

  • @BroadswordWargaming

    @BroadswordWargaming

    Yes, that would look good. This isn't a very big board (it's kill team sized(, so I didn't have the room for zig zagging trenches without clogging it up too much. I will be doing this on a larger board, so lots of zigzags and some weapons bunkers and stuff would look awesome. 😁

    You know what you should had done. You should had done two full lays of the styrene then dig down. To were the model was half a quarter below the top level. At a V angle, the bunker could be a bit deeper. Save all those extra styrene parts paint them and scatter them along the board. They act like dirt or clumps of dirt and rocks.

    To complete that ww1 look, you gotta have trenches in one end of the board for Kriegs and a fortress on the other. Go Battlefield 1 and play a long series of short battles stretching from the trenches and ending in the siege of the fortress.

    Just an observation on the aesthetic side of things. For trenches I would have gone with barbed wire rather than tank traps, which as you see block line of sight. Pretty good build all the same.

  • @BroadswordWargaming

    @BroadswordWargaming

    I was actually after line of sight blocking, as the board side is a little too open. I did juggle the decision to include barbed wire, permenantly, but settled on having it as scatter terrain. 😀

  • @BroadswordWargaming

    Yeah, I felt that there wasn't really enough room to put too much zig zaginess onto this without overcrowding it or filling the board. It's only 30x22, so it's relatively small (kill team sized). I will come back to the trench style board, on a bigger piece. 😀

  • @BroadswordWargaming

    @BroadswordWargaming

    Yeah, I would probably go a bit deeper, but these frames weren't built with trenches in mind as they're only 25mm deep, without groundcover and wood etc. I'm actually pretty happy with how they came out though, fun for an overrun trench peice. 😀

  • @BroadswordWargaming

    @BroadswordWargaming

    I mean, it's being used for killteam really and those boards aren't very big. You don't have room for 90 degree turns and bunkers without over crowding the board. If you want to do that, you could, but I don't think it'd look good at this size. It is really just a nod to that style but grim darking it up
