Making a Soldering Station

Making a soldering station..
Solders of fortune!
The reason I chose this soldering iron is cause it measures the temperature at the very tip of it, therefore it's very accurate. (knock-off or not!)

Wanna make one of your own?
Here 's the list of materials:
(I am also including some links on most of the stuff you are gonna need. Buying through those get's me a commission and probably a buck or two. Of course I'm not expecting of you shopping all your stuff here, but in case you dont have a place in mind, you can find yourself some pretty good deals here actually!)

Good job on the build video. As stated never sand the tip on an iron. Also you need to tin the tip on your iron befor first use. As soon as you put a new tip on your iron you need to add solder to it as soon as you turn it on or it will start to oxidizde.

That's odd! You should open a dispute if that's the case (if the listing has a 5core aviation plug). You can find this on any place selling electrical equipment I believe, or online. Just look for a "straight 5 core cable". Oh and the plugs are whats called "aviation plugs" (also 5 pins) Cheers Arthur!

@@ZepLabs They're saying you bought a kit, you didn't assemble the electronics. To me, that's fair game. I know what I'd need and it's honestly not worth the extra time when kits like that exist. But they are right in saying it could be misleading for someone looking to actually build the thing in your title. You cut and finished wood, and mounted a soldering station to it, very beautifully.. however you did not create the actual soldering station. It's different from making a reflow oven from other things; it wasn't originally a reflow oven so you created that. Your CNC wasn't originally a CNC, all of its components could just as easily have been used for different applications, even the controller board, so you created that too. The soldering station board that you bought, its code and the pen/tip are only made for that one purpose, by someone other than yourself, and would work on their own without what you've created. that's the distinction that should be made.

  • @ZepLabs

    @ZepLabs

@@c4pt1n54no i kinda get your point, but I quite disagree! This could be powered by a transformer, or it could be using another controller and so on.. There may not be circuitry or fine electronics in this vid, but there is some parts picking, some woodworking, some prototyping, some wiring... All of them to make a soldering station! And thats the tittle also! Either way, I appreciate your comment. It's very nicely put! Thanks for taking the time. Cheers

He is already distributing that on his channel, so I never did that myself (gotta give credit to the man!). Just type his name, or go to one of my “talking software” videos and you ‘ll find a link to get you there! As for the computer software, this things also runs on an SD card. I never used a GUI on that, and I ‘m glad to say I never had a problem with that. It’s stable as a rock ( had some issues with broken connections now and then when I was using grbl and GUIs. Not blaming anybody, but it’s a fact!) You could use any Marlin compatible GUI if you like so though..

22$+ 6$+7$ +14$=49$ for parts which is riduculus You can buy for this money a ready build solder station on alliexpress, gerabest or bangood that has a safe metal case.. and works out of the box. Wooden case for solder station is pretty bold..

Ehr not with an active tip and easy to find super cheap tips like the T12 tips from hakko. If you have one with that then by all means share.

Also worth pointing out that for people who do a lot of soldering having a lot of choices in terms of what tip to use for a specific job is a big thing. It is one of the reasons why I shy away from generic irons by default. There is a reason why companies like JBC have an insane selection here (shorter dwell times, special shapes for specific jobs etc).

Tool is a tool. First of all it has to do the job. Second the same important as first it has to be safe. Rest it should be handy and cost effective. Project shown here is neither safe nor cheap.. so it's bad. People should not try to build something like this and more important such tools should not be used in real life as it is not safe. And for alternatives .. it takes 1min to find something much cheaper and much better e.g. bit.ly/2PSdgW8

I think you have a comprehension problem as well as a lack of knowledge. Explain why this would be unsafe, because it is wood? Admittedly an unconventional choice but as it is not electrically conductive I see little issue there. Because it might burn when in prolonged contact with the hot iron? Sure, same as many plastic cases on many soldering tools. Next up we come to the fact that the one you suggest is _NOT_ a unit with an active tip. I also would look up some reviews on it if you think this is a 'safe' unit. Let's just say there is a reason why I check and double check every single piece of kit that comes from China. Do not get me wrong, they have some really good gear. There is also a heap of knock-offs for every good piece of gear where the design is copied and cheapened at the cost of safety. We are talking poor insulation, bad fuse design, mechanical issues that cause safe issues, bad thermal grounding and of course cheap assembly and cheap components. Again let me be clear I own a fair bit of stuff that comes from China, I just don't plug it in without being really sure. My point is building your own tools with kits ensures you know exactly what you have. You also seem to be confused on handy. I suggest trying to solder a 6 or more layer board with that tool you propose and then come back and talk about how many pads you ripped because you had to heat it for 10 minutes without an active tip and with no good temperature sensor that tells you the exact temperature of your tip.

Actually the iron i was using at the beginning of the vid has one of those pumps built in! I was just looking for an excuse to make me a fancy station I guess 😄 Also I quite hate those pumps! Try some copper wire mesh. As clean as it gets! Cheers

You start the clip holding circuit board and soldering iron, then make a box for the soldering iron as you look like you are finding things difficult, just to be holding both items again at the end, waste of time building something that didn't change the out come

In the end I got them capacitors out! Thats supposed to be the story. As for the irons, I’m still using the first one in my workshop, as I rarely work on delicate electronics there. ( the one made in the video is now in an electronics shop). But trust me, there is a huge difference when using them! Cheers
