If I'd bought all my life, I would own maybe a tenth the equipment I use daily. I'm supposed to be retired, but I was building and making, fixing things when a young kid, and now not only am free again, but have almost everything I could ever need, there's just one or two more things.... My first radio was a crystal kit, about six, I have to say, just this one video is worth subscribing, the very idea of tip temperature control was unknown to me until I was in the Marines. That equipment was thousands of dollars, Kasyan does it for twenty or thirty, and it's a quarter the size. I wish I'd seen this video a couple weeks ago, I just bought a solder station off ebay, from China, and it's probably a 936 clone. This was a joy to watch, the tech is dead on, and you do a very fine job explaining every detail, I really enjoy the fact it was taking you back to old times. Thanks for a great project.

Ms. Kasyan, about thirty years ago, when I retired, I had just bought a used Simpson 260 multi-meter, which had been a "lab standard" held to 1%, for the use in maintaining test equipment in the avionics I worked on. It had been put out as "obsolete", I paid almost nothing for it, and it's probably older than I am. It just died a month or so ago, I won't ever get around to repairing it, but if you'd like to have it, I'd be happy to send it to you, rather than scrap it. I don't know if you'd be interested in an old analog meter or not, in its time, it was the best there was, and the best thing for tuning analog radio tuned tanks and the like. Thanks again.

This is a lot of work for nothing. If you're not going to have feedback telling you your actual temperature, you may as well buy a $2 fan dimmer control and run your supply 120V through it and control your tip temps that way on a regular soldering iron. I bought a 'Quicko T12-942' for about $40 online and I couldn't be happier. Fast, accurate, and very light to use.

6:39 " to fully open" -> to fully close. This voltage, here 10V, is the voltage you need to reach 0.028 ohms between S and D. This is not the usual voltage, wich is 3,5V with the IRFZ44. Also, it can be considered like the maximal voltage applicable on the grid.

It’s definitely been done before. IIRC, they have the thermocouple (or is it a thermistor? I forget) in series with the heating element, so you just have to use a microcontroller to regularly turn off power to the heater and quickly measure the temperature. With that said, JBC tips are so expensive and not long-lasting (JBC uses very thin iron plating on the tips, which gives them excellent thermal characteristics, but at the cost of reduced durability)... if I were going to DIY a cartridge-style station, I’d base it on either Hakko or Pace. I have been lusting after a Pace ADS200...

trygve lundell I’m sure you could fairly easily. Just use a panel meter, and a quick amplifier to take the amplified thermocouple output voltage (the one going into the comparator) and scale it appropriately for the panel meter. This would show actual tip temperature. If you wanted to show the set point instead, you’d just look at the reference voltage going into the comparator instead and then again scale it to the meter. You could even put in a switch to quickly go between them. :)
