Making a Razor Utility Knife
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I will be metal casting a bronze utility knife that uses razor blades. I started by coming up with a design and 3d modeling it in fusion 360. Then I 3d printed patterns to use to make a sand mold. Once cast in bronze I refined the casting with hand files. Then I drilled and tapped holes for stainless steel screws that hold the razor blade in place.

I absolutely love this guy!!!!
The way you ground those screws the the proper length was really smart

I agree. Although it’s not really about getting the length right, it’s much more about holding the screws.
it looks great. it's i like that you mentioned the flaws in the casting, it makes it more relatable.
Very nice job. Maybe you can drill a hole in the top rear edge of the handle to hold the hex wrench you use to loosen/tighten the blade. The hole can have a small piece of rubber tubing inserted to grip the wrench.🤔🤷♂️

Yeah this is very cool but missed the opportunity to include the allen wrench and a spare blade or two nested in the handle
I like the design of your workbench, holds the sand pit nicely, extra supplies and a removable vice top. Very multi-functional!
This man knows how to pour. Look at how fast and accurate that was - it would take me a good 20 seconds after getting the crucible above the mold.
Idk anything abt all of this except the my pure satisfaction
I like the girder skeleton design. Functional and looks cool. Thanks for sharing!
I love that set up for the sand mold making. That's a really great idea.
I think you have a heck of a lot of patience! I’d be smashing the tool against the wall in the middle of the process
To hold the blade on, I would love to see a little cam lever instead of the screws. That way it's a tool-less change
Nice work! Your projects are very useful and not overly complicated, which encourages others to give it a try. Keep it up!
I love your sandcastle.
One thing I like to have is a steel honing rod on the back of my utility knife. I love my Milwaukee Fastback, and I took a diamond sharpening steel and used it to roughly polish the steel back of the casting that holds the blade. I can quickly draw the blade across it a few times to hone it when it starts getting dull, and get 2-3x usage out of the blade. I would like a folding knife that exposed the whole of the blade like yours does. I'd suggest adding a flexible 'clip' to one side of the blade guard so that it clips onto the back of the knife, and also add a slot on the blade guard to store a small allen key.
That pour was $$$, sir! Well done!
it's so simple and elegant and looks amazing! I wasn't sure how you were going to affix the blade to the handle, and I never would have thought of just two simple screws. I was thinking you were gonna have a separate bronze piece that snapped over the blade and into the holes - this way the blade wouldn't be exposed, but i REALLY like your way so much better than what I was imagining!!! - I have a nearly full, extra large coffee can filled with razor blades but no knife to use them in. And that's because they aren't trapezoid shaped like pretty much EVERY razor blade on Earth - They are rectangles lol .... My pops said his sister gave them to him because whoever she got them from couldn't use them because they're rectangle. And this was about 50 years ago ... and we have used them any time we need a small handheld blade, but the can is STILL nearly full LOL - I figured I would make a handle if I ever got a 3D printer, but I still don't have one.. But now I HAVE TO get to melting because I NEED to make this my first project!!! lol THANK YOU FOR THE IDEAS!!!
Beautiful work as always.
maybe design a built-in bladeguard for that one on your next iteration? and thanks for all the interesting videos
As usual, a video that inspires and amazes! I enjoy the random playfulness in your productions, and the results of your efforts are always a joy to behold.
Looks pretty good. I like that you attach it with screws because every utility knife I have the blades are loose and rattle.
Wow that's super cool! Now you just gotta make a kydex sheath
If you were to consider doing a "production run" I'd happily get one from you!
If you use a PVB filament you can smooth the outside with isopropanol
I think I have a use for such a knife too. Will make my own. Thanks for sharing.
wow dude... that is beautiful! this video is inspiring me to make my own version. Great video, great design, great build! Thanks for sharing man
Lovely design!
Stunning handle. Might be an idea to make a proper sheath in case that little blade cover pops off by accident.
always love the style of your designs
Looks great!! You know as well as I that you need to change blades often, and be able to do it quickly. Do another with your new design of a quick release, and replacement of the blade.

I was thinking the same about changing the blades quickly. I had a ittke Gerber utility knife (I think it's called fhe EAB or something like that) and while it was a nice utility knife, you had to unscrew one screw to change the blade. That was the only thing I didn't like about it but it was a nice piece to have. It was small and folded. I ended up losing it on a jobsite unfortunately but I bought the Gerber prybird which is a sliding utility knife and has a way to quick change the blade. I'm enjoying it more than the little EAB just for that reason!
I Love You THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!
As someone who uses utility knives a fair bit - two fiddly screws for a blade change would drive me insane. The cutter is gorgeous - but it would drive me nuts to try and live with. The magic of those blades is that they’re SO sharp, and so cheap that you can always have a sharp blade. I think you’ll get a bunch more satisfaction from an amazing tool if you can work out a quicker blade change system for the next version.
Looks really nice. Maybe you could think of a small lever system that can be used to lock the blade in by hand instead of the allen key.
Very cool!!! Thanks for sharing! Melt HAPPY Pour SAFE my Friend!!!🤙🤘🤟😎💚
Nice! Looks handy for sure!
Nice job as always, there is something mesmerising about casting metals, I can't stop watching. I have experimented a bit with 3d printed stencils/masks and a sand blaster, I managed to add frosty writings or graphics to a wine bottle, I think some metal items you make would look really nice partially polished and partially blasted. What do you think?
Robetson again?! Oh well letd watch it looks like great pattern by the way. Interresting style. ( just kidding)
I like utility blades a lot, kinda lazy about sharpening so I find myself using them more than an actual blade. I also like the skeletonized handle. Clean! Kind of curious about how it will hold up. Just don't drop it 😜
Great job! I want one! 🤘😁
cool project
This is sweet! You got me wanting one very badly 😂

Same, this is something I would use daily.
Better than the "Makers Knife". I think you just need to add a magnet to the sheet of the blade.
Good video!
👏🏻 absolutely love it!
I wonder if the knife design itself could incorporate a way to store the blade guard while in use? Perhaps a minimalist blade guard could be printed with a geometry to secure itself to the end of the handle or snap into the largest frame hole, so it is either unobtrusive or serves to benefit the grip rather than get into the way as an afterthought.
1:33 faqn yeaaa... I need a sniping gun for that, but that works too 🤣
Good job 💪🏻
beauty!
U could've gone with grainy look with sandblasted finish to blend in those bubbles but it looks ok
I like the skeletonized look! Would be even better if you came up with a way to change the blades quickly.
I would also grind or drill a slot for the key to have it with the blade at all times. If you needed to change the blades you don't need to look for a screwdriver or key to do it.
Next time you should try power tapping! It's really easy, you just set your spindle to it's slowest setting, put the tap in a collet, make sure the quill stop is all the way down out of the way, turn on the spindle and let the tap tap it's way into the hole all in one go, just use lots of tapping oil and let the spindle come to a complete stop before reversing the spindle direction and you should be fine.
thats different 👍👍👍👍
you know a hunting knife version would be cool, make it to take those replaceable blades from the outdoor edge knives.
grate video bud!
If using abs then one can sand abit and clean and give it some acetone vapors. Gona try it with something i want to cast next time. Maybe soldier coin
Nice! Awesome account!
A little inset to hold the Allen key for blade swaps would be cool. Maybe a mirrored plate on the back side to support the blade on the screw side head. Still cool for minimalism though
nice video can u give me a few hint to set up the sidewinder ?
If you haven't yet, for love of god make Battarangs!
I know there was no lost pla in this one but can you use the foundry to do what the kiln does as far as removing the pla? And would this also work for a resin print? As always, advice given is taken with a grain of salt an not as professional word lol. But I am definitely interested in this type of stuff and looking at getting a foundry soon. TIA
5:17 see how u are using the middle ull dish out the wheel like that try using 45d let to right motion across the face of the wheel
nice
Hey, could you share your 3d model? I want to make one for myself as well.
Why does it have so many air bubbles…great video by the way
I like the design, and don't mind the fixed blade. But you can't EDC that with that poor protection. Maybe print a nice sheet, or make Kydex sheet?
One hour gang
Another project i want to make but dont have the time argh!
cool but i cant imagine unscrewing blade every time i wanna change the blade, i abuse these blades 😅and the best blades are from dewalt just saying 👀
You should of did a hammered finish to hide the bubbles
Nice vise! can you tell us what is the vise brand?
This looks like it would be awesome for my leatherworking projects. Is a file available?
can you make a folding one like that?
So you took the utility out of utility knife by making it as screw in?
fuck yeah, bug-a-salt! cool knife..
Do you know anywhere you can buy small quantities of phosphor copper??
I think, and this is just my 2 cents, that something like this might well be suited to a ceramic vibrator? Might be a bit easier to clean up all those small places, If it won't work, would you possibly mind explaining why? Thank you kindly...
These the small ones? There's smaller ones too.
Where do you buy your raw materials like bronze, copper?
If you plan to make more even with aluminum sign me up
Nice fly snipe
Those screws look like eyes >.
Hi! What toy or shot gun is that?
Why don't you simply add 5% to the width of each mold depth to give you enough material to machine off with your mill to get a pit free finish?
5 month gang
2:56 So... an 8% tin man, eh?
Только ленивый уже не делал эти ножи 😂
You forgot to use it... :(
✌🏼🇦🇲✌🏼
US screw sizes are so weird.
you could legit use the patterns you 3d printed as the end product but ok
You didnt make a knife, you made a knife handle
first
Yeah, but you didn't even need stitches. ...
Thats going to get annoying needed an allan key everytime you have to change the blade
I'm disappointed.. I thought I'd see you dance barefoot on it to pack it down... oh well
Shooting the fly on cam was completely unnecessary.

Don't worry, it didn't go to waste. The carcass was donated to a local food bank and it provided sustenance to many starving bacteria.
Looks amazing but you got to cut your finger nails man, your not a women.
