Carly before you start your bigger hand sewing project, get yourself a leather thimble. They are comfortable and they mold to your finger over time. You could honestly make one for yourself if you got a scrap of soft leather. Just make sure you are covering your “pusher” finger to protect it from the needle. Loved your hoodie. So thoughtful. I bet it’s going to be comfortable as hell once he breaks it in a bit. Who doesn’t want to be wrapped in a hand stitched quilt all day!?!

Hello! experienced tailor here. genuinely OBSESSED with your own thought process and method, i must say first. honestly take a pic of it so u don't forget that because that more stylized approach is sick. ok now i do want to actually help u so you also have the other way of doin it, added to ur roster of seam finishing's. for 100 percent secureness, sew the bias tape right sides together with the seam allowance. then turn the bias tape over and under the seam when pressed flat. then sew in the ditch so that the stitch line is hidden. the second way is more like u guessed! simply sandwich the seam allowance between the bias tape and sew away! Personally i find this way harder cuz u gotta be good at aligning the bias perfectly and a lot of times u gotta go back and re-stitch shit. not my favorite.

I ADORE that hoodie you made for your brother. Such a thoughtful gift, he must be thrilled! When you talkad about letting the fabric ”speak to you” I knew exactly what you meant, it’s this organic way of patchwork that I love and do myself. I also love how you have this vision of your brother’s vibe and create according to that. As several others have recommended, always use a thimble when you handsew 😊

  • @pamistyle

hi carly, i am ALWAYS using thimbles when sewing with hand - slowstitching, quilting, embroidery... ALWAYS! I am using a clover silicon thimble and a clover silicon finger thingy for the pointing finger. that makes getting the needle through so easy and no pain at all! It also depeds what kind of needle you are using. for quilting i recommend pony needles - but i am also using milliners no. 3 a lot or bigger, if i am using thicker thread! you can find my favorite supplies in a video on my channel! i love the hoodie - always impressed how you just do it! keep going girl!

Just in case you're interested in exploring it further (I am making my first quilt!) a lot of hand quilters that like thicker thread use size 12 thread. Normal sewing thread is like... size 40 I think. It can come in lots of colors including gradients and multicolors! The two brands I know of are aurafil and wonderfil. I'm sure there are others.

this is hilarious; I also just finished a jacket for my brother AND I'm working on a quilt lolol love how this make turned out! bias binding is attached using one of the wings to the right side (right sides together), then folded over to the other side. you can either just stitch it down on the machine or carefully whip stitch them down if you don't want the bias tape showing on the front side

I think you solved the seam issue great! I would have done a flat felled finish. (right sides together, trim one seam allowance, wrap the other seam allowance around it and stitch down through all layers) This seam is very strong as well. You could also trim the batting before doing this for a super flat finish. Love the hoodie!!

Awesome job! I made a quilt coat in the past and just had some flappy bias bound seams that I stitched to the seam allowance for the armholes and I did a similar thing to what you did for the other seams. The big difference I did was I used a bias bind for my hem and centre front opening so avoid excess bulk at the hem.

So generous of you to do a pattern breakdown! 🥹💗 I'll be heading over to see that! 👍🏻 I don't get on with thimbles, but have found that covering my needle-pushing finger with sticking plaster (don't know if that's what you call it in Australia? The sticky stuff you put on a grazed knee) works brilliantly! Just downloaded the Vancouver Sleep Clinic's playlist on Spotify and like what I've heard so far! ⭐ Bit Coldplay-ish I think. 😍 Lots of love and hugs, Deb xx 🤗💕 PS. I think this tutorial: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXqN05SNktm0cqQ.htmlsi=_ol--80R4UYhU_dD has the kind of binding you want. It's a gorgeous project and a she's a lovely lady, but if you just want the binding bit it's about 10 minutes in. 🤗🤗

Im sorry but the shape of your hoodies bugs the F out of me. Its a cool idea and a great execution of your project, but for someone that wears hoodies for warmth not style, that fact that your design flares out at the bottom instead of following the line of the body sends chills up my back thinking about the cold wind that would blow up under that. Otherwise i enjoyed the video and the project, though i personally would have liked a bit more detail on the making and sewing of the hood itself.
