I can tell you, you are getting the steel way to hot. when welding stainless or thin wall pipe it's all about keeping it cool. Would strongly recommend caping the ends of the pipe with tape then poking a hole with the welding rod in the bottom tape cap. Then getting argon an running a hose in to the top of the pipe (through the tape). This allows argon to flow through the pipe to help cool it and put a little pressure in it. It also keeps your weld clean on the inside. Good luck!

  • @lbrownyy

Prevent oxidisation inside of the pipe formally known as purging the weld, due to the thickness penetration of the root will be difficult to achieve with minimal heat.

Just a bit of advice. 1: get rid of that collet body setup you have on your tig torch and get you some gas lenses. They will give better shielding gas coverage and larger cup diameter to help keep the weld shield while it’s cooling below its oxidation temp. Argon coverage is your friend when welding alloys always. 2: drop down in to a 1/16” tungsten and sharpen it to a steep angle. It will help you weld at a lower amperage and you will have an easier time starting and maintaining your arc. 3: pulse tig will help keep that thin tubing from overheating and blowing through. Keep practicing you will only get better with more time under that welding hood.

  • @bodibrodice147

Came here to say this.... In addition get that tungsten stick out set just perfect so you can walk the cup. Maybe it's just an old guy thing, but at 37 years old my hands are no longer steady enough to make the Instagram weld porn without cheating as much as I can. Brace yourself. Get as relaxed as possible, and focus on removing as much room for error as you can from your muscular system, and place it instead on your skeletal system. Some may call it cheating, but I say cheat early, and cheat often... After all the end goal is to make the best weld you can.

One more thing try going up to the next size on your filler metal/tig wire to 1/16. It will help act as a heat sink when you add wire to your weld puddle. Which will help keep 4130 tube from getting too hot. Just a suggestion.

Your reference to using gas lenses leads me to believe you're a pipe welder. I never liked those big cups at all but I did stainless sheetmetal for 12 years and normally used a number 5 or 7 cup with 3/32 2% thoriated tungsten, no pulse, no pedal, normally I'd tig anything from 18ga to 1/4" with this set up. Happy welding brother!

as a mountain bike mechanic, I would just like to say that one, longer top tube lengths mean a shorter stem which in turn actually makes the bike more stable on descents. And two, flat bars are designed to be cut to the proper length. if you felt like those bars were took wide, cut a centimeter off each end and try again. Note that wider bars are more stable, so there is an art to bike fitting.

My first thought when I saw the video come up was, "I wondered how long it would take." Firstly, I would definitely recommend getting a bike fit if you haven't already, because it would be a shame to build this bike and then not enjoy riding it because it has too much reach or something. In terms of handlebars and fit, swept-back bars could be more comfortable (Although everyone is different), as they won't force your wrists outwards like a straight bar would. Also, grips are a nice cheap way to experiment with what is comfortable. There are so many different types that the only way to know is to try them. I recommend seeing your local bike shop as they might let you try some before you buy them.

Steel is most definitely real. Fabrication and ease of repair is superior to any other material. More compliant than aluminum and fewer dentists than titanium. The only thing that's really superior is carbon fiber and well, you have to build tooling for that, which means you should probably make a few thousand of whatever you were considering making. So, yeah, great for custom bikes.

Hi Alec, as I am a MTB'er too I am excited for this build. The wide handlebars are typically good in MTB'ing because they ensure a good attack position when tackling more rough terrain. With wider bars your elbows and arms are more in a 90° bend witch is good because you want your arms and legs to work as "suspension". Wider bars makes the bike feel more stable and planted it gives you more confidence in the descents. Narrow bars, however, will feel more nimble. Cross-country Bikes tend to have a long stem (70mm-100mm) and narrow bars (600mm - 740mm) this is good for climbing and it opens up your chest for better breathing. If you tend to go more towards downhill it is better to take a short stem (30mm-50mm) and wide bars (760-810mm). You can test the best width of bars for you by going in a pushup position and measure the distance between your hands. The pushup position simulates the best position in which your arms can best absorb the uneven terrain.

Something to bare in mind - When you said hands and wrists are getting quite tired, it may be because you aren't that used to riding hard-tail/off road (i assume) you are over gripping the bars rather than the size of the handlebars ect. New experience + New sensations = staying tense sort of thing. I'm working off when i take motorbikes out i'm not that used to or haven't ridden before i tend to find i'm white knuckling the grips - So could be something similar? id say take a bike out for another rip and if/when your hands start to ache and get tired just think about your grip and see if your sub consciously squeezing the grips. It may not be this at all but best finding out rather than make a change to your bike for the wrong reason, if that makes sense? Anyway! Hope you and the family are keeping well in these crazy times.
