    Maybe try including a way of increasing drag on the guard of the sword? Making it longer? Rounder? Of course, maybe the weight of the whole thing might overcome the drag forces in the air...

    Ph.D. in physics to help with drop stability. *Use the quillions for stabilizers. Have your normal quillions but make them simply flat, and fin like, even straight out like a WWII fighter. The trick is to also have shorter quillions perpendicular to the blade and the other side quillions.* Great care must be taken to ensure symmetry in thickness as well as in the other dimensions. Imagine an inverted rocket or missile. Having extra mass in the front will also help, but don't overdo it. If the front of your blade isn't balanced properly, it will introduce a wobble. Also, having the blade flair so much is inviting wind gusts to take it. I would reccommend a more narrow blade with a diamond cross section. Tying a cloth to the end can also add stability by creating drag on the tail. I don't reccommend a forward swept guard. Forward swept fins are not aerodynamically stable. You need the stabilization I am talking about because up in a windy tower with such a large surface area, you will NOT be able to hold it straight to drop it and it will not stay straight in the wind even if you could. Finally, the Aussies are going to want maximum penetration of whatever their target will be, so again the diamond cross section of a more narrow and straight blade will provide the best results. Addendum: If you want it to look more like a sword, there is nothing wrong with a flared pommel that provides more stabilization. Think WWII fighters. Second Addendum: I said this a bunch in the replies and so did a lot of others, the key principle is you want your main sources of drag to be behind your center of mass.

    Remember, Zweihänders did actually exist, and were used by real people in real battles. Some Zweihänders there are records of, are up to 84 inches long and were found in battle sites. So they weren't just massive, unusable wall hangers. Leave it to us Germans, and we'll think up swords that'll send grown men running for their mothers. (People who used them were already way stronger than the average person, though they were generally used to break pike formations and disable cavalry)

  • @rchouser123
    @rchouser1233 жыл бұрын

    Add a tassel like a Chinese sword or a calvary sword. It'll give you drag on the handle end. HR fails miserably with hitting targets because there's no drag on the tail to make it fly straight. Look up a "pilot chute" for parachutes. I also like the quillion idea the physics professor mentioned.

  • @ethanthornton8687
    @ethanthornton86873 жыл бұрын

    Add a bigger guard and it will act as fins on a dart. The key is to have your center of mass ahead of your center of pressure(drag). A good way to test this is to tie the prototype up at the center of mass with a long string and spin in a circle. If it tumbles, your center of pressure is too far forward. If it stays parallel to the ground, you’re good. I would recommend a gladius shaped sword with little to no distal taper, and a similar guard to a longs word except swept a little backwards towards the handle.

    You should do some quick reading on arrow and dart aerodynamics. The key to making your sword fly straight is to make sure that the center of aerodynamic pressure is behind the center of gravity. You achieve this by increasing the drag at the tail end of the sword, either by the shaping the guard and pommel so that they have a lot of air resistance, or by adding something like decorative tassels. You have to be extra careful with a flat shape like a sword, as it will easily achieve lift as soon as it starts to deviate.

    design tip: you can stop the flipping of your sword by adding a "break" to the end of it - say a 30cm piece of large cloth as a decoration of sorts. explanation: the weight distribution is important, but before it comes FRICTION. the higher the friction/mass ratio, the slower the maximum fall speed will be. a large piece of cloth has a pretty high f/m ratio and its fall speed is therefore pretty low. adding it to the back of the sword makes it want to fall slower and therefore works as a stabilizer of sorts ! pretty simple, but some people dont know, and im just trying to help. leave me alone :D

    Quick lesson on rocket stability: Center of mass needs to be forward of center of pressure. Center of mass can be estimated by finding the point the object balances. Center of pressure can be estimated by making a cardboard cutout of the object's profile and the balance point of this piece of cardboard is roughly the center of pressure. Use differing densities and shape to move these reaction centers in your design. (Think of an arrow: dense and tight at the stabby end, light and wide at the other. )

  • @dickrendell6574
    @dickrendell65743 жыл бұрын

    Hi Alec! - The cross-guard can be decorative, and act as "fetching" for what is essentially your sword shaped 'arrow' - The Pommel can contain the lifting eye for their winch, making it so that it is perfectly in line with the tang. - I think you'll be shocked at the cutting potential of a leaf-blade, much like sting in lord of the rings! - Since this isn't a practical sword, perhaps some aerodynamic potential can be made from the fuller, or an extended fuller?

    Hey Alec! I watch tons of How Ridiculous. I’d recommend putting some sort of tail stabilizer through the rear ring of the sword. That way if the sword upon release catches wind the tail will correct the flight path prior to penetration. Maybe something like straps of leather. Similar to the game of lawn darts where a tail helps to stabilize during flight.

    Hey man, Just wanted to give you a suggestion that will help big time in terms of flight stability. Have a four sided hilt instead of two, and have them taper into the blade like the feathers in an arrow. It will give passive stability in your both your tipping axis, and a little resistance on the axis of rotation as well. Also, Yes on the stabby end being heavier. If the lighter end gets exposed to the wind it will slow more than the heavy object, this is due to inertia; it takes more energy to stop a heavy object. Objects fall in what ever way resists the least, so the lighter end of a dynamic piece will often tail behind the heavy object. An arrow again is a great example. If you drop it business end up, it will flip heavy side down. Love your content! Keep up the good work

This is why a lot of tai chi swords have them, they help with balance. - For the heat treating temper.. just use a huge long water trough ..
