Seeing a sword that huge actually moving around in real life with legitimate German maneuvers looks damn intimidating! Always been a fan of using the giant weapon classes in games, I love that this thing would be so effective in real life if we can only get the weight and durability problems fixed.
@Dovahkiin106

I think another big part of why they were never a thing is because of how much metal it would take to produce compared to a regular sized sword. I imagine you could easily produce 10 or more regular sword with the materials used to make just one of those giant swords, so cost effectiveness would be rock bottom regardless of the durability/weight issue.

@@Dovahkiin106 On a battle field, a weapon like that would be utterly useless. It is too slow. and if you knew what you did, it would be easy to make an enemy with that kind of sword, overextend, so you can zoom in close, and deliver the deathblow.

@@palmarolavlklingholm9684 Did...did you not watch the video? The discussion is how effective it'll be at a reasonable weight. We all know it'd be too heavy if made from normal steel. If they could make giant swords a decent weight back then: the reach, mass, and momentum swings of this thing would make it extremely effective as a battlefield weapon. Heck, the science is that a longer blade creates a higher tip speed, so that paired with the greater reach would actually make it the faster weapon, hitting the opponent quicker and while the user is at a safe range. They even point that out, surprised at how fast the thing is despite using lighter and smaller weapons of the same material, even shields that would block most of the body. And despite switching, whoever had the giant sword won more exchanges, so it's not just Shad or Nate being the better swordsman, the weapon itself was the variable.

Shad is seriously living his best life in this video. I'm sure all of us dream of being able to be an adult frolicking in the fields while wielding a giant foam sword.

@@PJDAltamirus0425 theoretically if you have a functional titan sword you could probably put a light wood or maybe even a sort of stretched chain or gambison material on one side. That way you’re still able to grab the handles and use it effectively but you can’t force a sword through the inside especially if it was partially covered in wood. It would remove some of the versatility because you can only grab the handles from one side but it’s still very Versatile and light without sacrificing defense. If you wanted to use such a weapon to larp or something you could even put a crest on the shielded area similar to a crest painted on a shield.
I always loved how realistic most people in Berserk fight. Half swording and going for gaps in the armor and having stances etc. And then Guts seemed like an interesting fantasy counterpoint to that. What if there was a super human fighting in this wildly unrealistic way with a giant impractical sword. This is what you always see when Guts fights ordinary humans. You literally can't defend against his attacks, trying to parry his attacks is literally a death sentence because the Dragonslayer will just break through any attempts at defense, unless you're bigger and stronger than Guts and his Dragonslayer, like most of the Demons in Berserk are. Or in the case of the Godhand, just bend reality to make it impossible for Guts to land a hit.

There's also a lot of debate where even dragonslayer doesn't weigh all that much (300-400 lbs). So someone with his build and stature could swing that with some struggle (considering my mans is wielding that thing with 1 functional flesh arm), the fantasy aspect that came in with the berserker armor, that helped make it make more sense. His Golden age swords (not including zodds thrown to him against the black rhino knight) have probably weighed as much as common two handed long-swords. And Studio 4°c is killing it with making his swords logical.

This magical material will be the same density/weight as the original, but will now be invincible. As a bigger dude who's always dug big ass swords, I'm thoroughly invested in this project. 😂
You have my full attention with this project. Love to see the updates, but fully understand the time it will take. If it gets put off till next summer, make sure you do it right and don't try to rush through the process. Very excited to see the realization of this crazy idea.
I fought with giant foam swords for about 7 years, i found that keeping a secondary "catching" dagger in your off hand which is used kinda like a gauntley in order to redirect the momentum of the large sword in order to reduce wasted energy. In addition, as you learn to feel the weight of the sword you find you can rotate the large sword around its center of gravity with far less effort then moving the center of gravity so learning to use your footwork to move around the center weight of the blade makes for an easier time positioning the large blade for blocking. The offhand catching blade can also be used for close range surprise attacks when distance is closed.
Have to give props on the sound effects during tests. It's a bit uncanny, but it's an excellent way to communicate hits, misses and blocks without being visually distracting.

@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly Exactly, my DM was of the mindset that it would be too big to utilize, but now they agree that if you have the strenght then it has the offensive ability to counter the lack of defensive. And since we're playing a TTRGP that in many ways is very realistic (that being riddle of steel), simulating it wasn't hard. So now my character has the ability to cut people in half, but has to rely on dodging for defense.

@@Neptune0404 There's a guy here on youtube that does training with an actual 50 pound berserk sword. He definitely can't do any of these maneuvers, but the big takeaway from his videos is that it doesn't matter. The *point* of a superheavy sword IS the weight. You just need to be strong enough to hold the thing, and you can just let gravity to the work from there. If someone charges you, all you have to do is drop your sword on them, and they WILL die.

Shad- "I'm too tired to make videos" Also Shad- "I'm using the big sword!" Nothing can beat your enthusiasm shad lol

I really love this new series of experiments you're running! VERY interesting stuff. Definitely looking forward to when you guys manufacture that test sword, excited to see, and hear of the results
Hearing Mauler say "No one wants to read a ten paragraph essay" is the funniest thing I have heard all week
I’m a fan of the new direction with the channel. It’s different, but it still has the same vibe. It also allows Shad to not over exert himself.
Awesome stuff, really interesting. Thanks again.
AAAHH MY GOSH I LOVE THESE PRACTICAL TESTING VIDEOS!!!!!!! please do more!!
The giant swords were far more effective than I thought. I thought they would be too slow, but the range combined with the ability to change guards and the challenge with deflecting such a heavy weapon make it far more effective.

They would be way slower than in the video, my buddy is using a foam sword, but managing that amout of steel will make you WAY slower and dont allow any flexibility at all per strike, if you notice most of the attacks he manages to hit is changing the direction of the strike mid attack, which is impossible with a heavy object like that

It's sort of like the Mike Tyson of swords. Sure, you can block against it and it might not kill you immediately, but you won't be blocking for long.
@kikixchannel
Жыл бұрын
Um...They had difficulty blocking it when it was foam...If both swords were metal, even if both users would have superhuman strength...yeah. Blocking would be virtually impossible. Growing weight does not have a linear effect. That's why a giant-sized beetle wouldn't have even half of the strength (relatively to its body weight) as a small-sized one. Not to mention, the smaller weapon would be at a very high risk of being destroyed if you add the full weight of such a giant blade, gravity AND super-human stregth all working together. So, I'll repeat again. If weapons were real and both parties had their strength raised to viable use the giant sword, blocking it would be virtually impossible due to how that increase in weight would affect the interactions.

Interestingly enough, that "kung-fu maneuver" that trapped the sword between his arm and knee tells me that the "last clap" maneuver from Stormlight makes a lot more sense with the sort of giant swords they're using. Previously I thought it was kind of unrealistic.

they should also make a single sided giant sword where the handle itself partially goes into the back of the blade, and there is a space between that handle and the body of the blade itself

I baaically thought of this same idea. A good example to look up would be the sword of "ragna the bloodedge" as it's basically exactly what you describe, but it is, an explicitly anime weapon, but the concept is there, also, instead of leaving a hole in the middle of the sword, make "swoops" in the back, against the rod that would act as the "spine" of the blade the the sharp edge would protrude from such that you would have a big "reasonably easy" to grab section in back to grab and manipulate, behind the blade.
@renevarr

The disadvantage of that is many of those draw cuts would become much less effective
Shad Fact: Those first few swords were - in fact - not foam. They were real, and Shad has bestowed extreme burst healing on his employees. He already had is, of course.

I need a game with these moves in it! It looks so amazing! Thank you for your hard work gents!
You know, seeing how you guys fight with the titan swords, it makes me think there could be some validity to the fighting style of Siegfried and Nightmare from the Soul Calibur games. Using the blade as essentially a shield, keeping momentum going, and large quick strikes that would disarm the opponent
@danielantony1882
Жыл бұрын
Trust me, if this was a more realistic scenario, albeit fantastical, the giant swod guy would kill the longsword guy in a single strike. People think you need to raise the sword to hit but you don't. If you have superstrength, all you need to do is provoke the normal sword user and chop him in half when he tries to go for your gaps.

I totally agree! I was thinking the same thing😁
The attack pattern of these “colossal swords” is similar to the claymore and zweihander but you gotta use a lot more body weight to physically use the sword and switch only your body to get the sword on your shoulder again this can be seen in games like the soulsborne or monster hunter you can also hold the sword in a way to use it like a shield due to its enormous size so overheads slow side attacks and tackle will work with it
You guys are having way too much fun doing this! It's a delight to watch. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 However, it seems to me that the Achilles heel of the giant sword would be anything other than a wide-open space (trees, walls, large rocks, formations on a battlefield), but it's still really cool that you guys were able to wield them effectively. I look forward to seeing the carbon-fiber giant sword in action!
Y’all look like you are having so much fun lol
Love the sound effects, looks like so much fun
This is insane! I never really thought about how much the weight would come in to play and wow. I'm a game dev with some games with big swords in the works so this is really cool to see! Keep at it guys, y'all are amazing!
This looks amazingly fun!
This is actually really interesting. What a great project for the channel -- I can easily see you do 10+ videos just on this sword.
10:45 As a wise man once said: Bravely running away is the best method of avoiding bruises. So invest in comfortable shoes.
That beautiful epiphany: "It's like a spear, but times a hundred!" "It's good."
It makes sense, but I did notice how the most effective attack styles mirrored naginata and other polearm techniques. Naginata often have a bit of a knob on the ishizuki, or butt, so you can do those big circular swings and allow the weapon to be at the absolute limit of reach. I haven't quite gotten through this series of videos, but I'm curious if you'll chosen to add a bit of a flare to the butt of the final sword. Your functional fantasy videos are so much fun. Great work from you and your team, Shad.
