Kenny, that system makes a very nice miter box. The size looks like it will be perfect for your model making. I like the walnut with maple dowels.

I made another version of this mitre box out of plywood Paul and I wasn't quite happy with it and that it when I decided to use some scrap walnut to make one. I really like this newer version and the guides are fantastic. Thanks for tuning in sir. Once again, I appreciate your dedication to the show.

Another great show Kenny. I had not seen those guides before but I’ll check them out. That miter box would be ideal for small furniture moldings and banding inlays.

For some of my smaller projects, this mitre box will be perfect. Of course, you can always alter the size to suit your needs and your projects. Thanks for the kind words on the show and for tuning in Jim. I appreciate it.

Thank you for noticing Kathleen. I've been working at it for almost a year now. I'm still not where I would like to be, but I am pretty pleased with my weight loss progress. Thanks for tuning in and for taking the time to leave the kind words.

Granted this box is more involved and expensive than the ready made miter boxes that can be purchased. But making this I can see that the accuracy of your box is much more accurate being customized to a specific saw. I wasn't aware of these guides. I'm 100% smarter now!

That tool is a thing of beauty! Would hate to get it dirty lol. Just bought a new air compressor, LOL it in the house for now lol. Once I use it, the shine is gone and all is well lol. Great show!

Glad to hear that you liked the show Michael. I'm also glad to hear that you got a new air compressor. I need a new one but I haven't bitten the bullet yet and bought one. I'm debating whether I want to fall down the rabbit hole of going for pneumatic tools or not. That would be a much bigger compressor and possibly and external housing outside of the shop for it. @@acutabove_woodworkings I only bought a 6 gallon one, it came with 3 nail guns, 23, 18, and 16 gage, hose and hose parts. It is a Porter-Cable. Home Depot had them for $199.99 plus NYS tax. Instead of the 16 gage, the other choice was a 3/8" stapler, but they were all out of that kit. So I bought what they had. I needed it for all the tubeless tires we have and woodworking projects. My old Craftsman was a 5 gallon. Everything is the same except the hose is 1/4 instead of 3/8. I'm wondering if it is possible to convert it?

@@michaelmarchione3408 As long as the fittings are removable, you could always change the fittings to be a 3/8 hose. There are adapters available.

Good morning Kenny. Neat little project. One of the things I never liked about the commercial miter boxes is the slop in the slots. These guides seem to alleviate that. I'll have to order some after the Christmas shipping fiasco is done. My "new" thing with walnut is using brass hardware-in fact when you talked about screwing the sides on the first thing I thought of was brass screws. Then thought of brass rod like you did with the maple dowels. I wonder how stainless steel hardware would look.......hmmm..... Have a great day Kenny and Merry Christmas.

Plenty of options here for modification and customization Woody. Make the box as big or as small or as pretty or as ugly as you like. That's the great thing about making your own and these guides make it work really well. I will have to say though that it takes a bit to get used to removing the saw by sliding it out instead of lifting it out. We are creatures of habit I guess. LOL. It's "only" a mitre box but I like the way you take pride in everything that you make so it turns out to be a really nice jig. I presume that the saw should be slid in to start as well as slid out to finish a cut?

100%. The saw should be slid in before and after the cut. Trying to bring the blade down through the guides will both ruin the guides and possibly damage the kerf on your saw. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words on the show.

Very nice build Kenny, my Dad and Grandad had a Mitre Box and i'm sure my Dad still has his. The sound it defo different i'm not sure if it's my ears, but it sounds a little crackly in parts to me. Stay Safe, Barry (ENG)

There were a few episodes of the show that were filmed with this audio system Barry and they were the only ones that were filmed. Wasn't at all happy with the sound and went back to my original setup. Thanks for the kind words on the show and for tuning in

somehow never saw this product until the spring 23 lv catalog that just showed up - seems pretty dope. do the guides somehow index in the groove so they're exactly "parallel" to the sides of the miter box?

As long as you set them properly and use a trusted square to align the guides in your mitre box, they will automatically be "parallel". The cut dadoes in the top of the mitre box side also help with the alignment. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Hi Kenny! Good job. Particularly for you building your models like the helicopter and semi trucks, etc. The guides actually affect the set of the teeth rather than the kerf. (Just between you and me). Just curious, what are the guides made of. Looks like a hard plastic to me. Bill

They are actually molding from Delrin Bill. It's a form of bushing material and they really work well. Very sturdy. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the build. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

I've got a cheap plastic miter box and it's terrible, the one you just made looks great.

The best part about it Mark is, not only does it look great, but it functions extremely well. No slop in the slots because they were cut by the same saw that will be used with the box. Bad news Kenny. The guides are out of stock and won't be available until April. What saw do you recommend for the size box you made? Is a Japanese saw advantageous in this application? Nice project!

I am not surprised Ronald. After a busy Christmas season and a pandemic closing down suppliers it's getting difficult to get things shipped out. I personally have quite a few items on order that are back ordered as well. Not to worry though. I am sure that they will be in stock soon. I wouldn't personally use a Japanese saw as it has no spine along the top of the blade to stiffen it. I prefer saws that have the structural spine for a mitre box. The measurements are taken and the box is constructed in such a way so that the spine will ride on the guides as it finishes the cut, only allowing the blade to just score the surface of the bottom board. Using a Japanese saw will allow you to cut cleanly through your mitre box. Hopefully, your guides will come into stock soon Ronald. I'm actually considering a second set to make a mitre box for my carcass saws but from what you are telling me, I will have to be patient and wait until they are back in stock. These saw guides were gifted to me by my family for my birthday. I have never nor am I now sponsored by anyone, including Lee Valley. For that matter, I have never been given any tool by any retailer to use on the show. I am a one man show who has no affiliation with anyone. I just really like the Veritas line of tools and Lee Valley is one of my favourite stores to shop at. Everything in my shop has been bought and paid for by me or I have received it for my birthday or Christmas from family or friends. I hope this answers your question Jim. It's a valid one for sure.
