Making a Leather & Kydex Survival Knife Sheath Leather Working ASMR
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Let's make a complicated leather knife sheath (with storage for sharpening stones or matches). This time for a Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist bowie knife. Watch me play around with tooling, heat-forming Kydex, using a laser engraver/cutter, veg-tan and oil-stoned leather, woodworking (OK, that's a stretch, but still...).
My laser is the excellent xTool P2 55W CO2
Below is a link for saving a few bucks purchasing a P2 direct from xTool. I was given this code to pass on to my viewers when I first received the the laser. Hopefully it still works:

Right. In all fairness a good leather sheath usually is worth more than the blade

30seconds in and I saw how cheap the knife was and now idk if I want to watch the full video 😒😑😁
I can't tell you what a wonderful, peaceful experience it was just watching that video. It's so seldom to see a true artist at work anymore, let alone one with this kind of skill. The end product was truly a thing of beauty.

I have built a handful of more complex multi-piece sheaths for my custom knives, but this just unlocked so many things that I never even thought to try! Thank you for putting this out here for us to enjoy and learn from. Wonderful work, and again thank you for putting this out into the world.

I made a sheath for my bowie knife a few weeks ago. I'm a lefty so I have to change everything. Wish I had seen this first. Always amazing.
Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

Very impressive. I have a long way to get you your level of craftsmanship. You do give ideas and desires for one to better themselves with leathercraft.

What a beatiful craffmanship.
The thing that struck me about this video, the main reason I watched it, was that I couldn’t imagine why someone would use both leather and kydex to make a knife sheath. I thought perhaps you’d use the kydex as a backing to stiffen the sheath and protect the back from wear. Using it to make the mouth to protect the leather from the knife is frankly genius. Traditionally in many places bone or horn are used but shaping those materials can be tricky. Thanks for the idea.
And to think I found the oem sheath for my drop forged survival knife to be great. This work of art is absolutely gorgeous and I wish I could buy it. Thank you for some zen time today.

I have the same knife and I can assure you that it's worthy of that sheath. It's a perfectly balanced fighting knife. I can get mine screaming sharp. I like your attention to detail. No I can't make a sheath as nice as you. But like you I'm proud of my ability. I have put some people in awe of how sharp I can get a knife. 50 years of experience helps. My dad used to say please not so sharp this time. I always got a inside laugh about it. But he was serious.

Thanks for watching! I agree; it's a very nice knife, especially for the price. I've got a whole set of sharpening tools. In my opinion, if it's not sharp it's not really a knife --- just a knife-shaped piece of metal.
What an awesome design. This was amazing to watch. 👏👏
What a sweet looking sheath, one of the best I've seen!! Thanx, Sam

That was a much better and nicer sheath than what it came with. I make knives and as a function of that I make sheaths and I love that sheath you made. I use to make sleeves out of Kydex and build them into the sheaths as they were almost indestructible. I really liked the aluminum (?) guide you put in to protect it from getting beat up and who would buy a knife from a cut up from insertion and withdrawal Excellent job! I used to get teased by some of my customers and friends about not getting knife business because people would often buy knifes out of catalogues and on line then bring them to me and ask me to make them a really nice sheath for it. Which I would but I'd tell them, I hope the knife works for you because I feel like i'm building you a great sheath for a mediocre knife at best. usually they be back in a year and wanna talk about a nice knife. Enjoyed the video.

That's awesome mate, turned out beautifully! I always feel bad making sheaths like this for customers and offering the same price as what the knife had cost, considering just as if not more work went into making the sheath itself. I wish more people understood how much effort goes into making them.

Nice sheath. Like the other guy said: “the sheath is worth more than the knife.” You should really only slick the edges after you have assembled the panels and sanded the edges so as not to do it more than once. Saves time and work.

OK don't get me wrong here because in the end it's amazing work. Stuning job young man neat & clean and also very clever attachment of the belt loop. The only thing you need is a peaice of spacer leather between sheath body& belt loop and the knife will seat properly . Happy Trails

Thanks! The Kydex insert forms a slope that the blade rides down on (and keeps the sheath's mouth open). I didn't think about it until it was too late that I could have seated the insert a little deeper to make it sit flush. Will have to remember that for next time.
Beautiful as always! Excellent work my friend

I use a small dremel drillpress also. Lately ive been using my class 26 taking the thread out and just using the needle to poke my holes. I still get the strength of my 1.0mm ritza thread but so much faster. Also my holes are more in line. I noticed with drillpress some holes can get slightly out of perfect alignment. I love this sheath. Ive never used kydex but might give it a try one day. Im assuming thats what you used
