Making a Jian Sword ⚔

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This took me 20-30 Hours of work! It started as a 5160 steel Leaf Spring from an old truck. It has a 26 inch blade and Sepele Handle. Praise God for His many gifts! Hope you enjoy watching it!

That’s a picture perfect Jian that I’d carry. Not too long, decent sized, and compact. You should make and sell these professionally.

You did really well for your first sword build! This is a hard blade to learn on with it’s bevels and double edge! I have a Jian, the style with the 8 flat surfaces, and watching your build and thinking about my sword, I got a new appreciation for the skill level of the blade smith who built my sword! You did well with yours! Thanks for showing us your work😊

Hey man, all in all solid work. I really dig how this looks. Couple things I'll mention I didnt see you do in the video. 1. "Keying" the pommel and guard. Not sure that it was done with chinese swords, but with Euros I've often seen someone take a drift and punch the bottom of the guard so the last 1/4 inch or so it has to be forced on to make it a more secure fit. Same was often done with the pommel. I personally don't like threaded pommels, I go with a peen or recessed nut myself on em but if you're wanting to do a thread, it's your design. 🙂 2. When you welded that extension onto the tang (never done this one myself, so grain of salt) I've seen others cut the existing tang in such a way that the extension is slotted in and welded along its edges. Gives more contact. With swords at least you get an ass load of stress on the pommel and it's usually necessary to do it this way and normalize the tang before adding a pommel to give it necessary strength. Not sure if these are things you knew or cared about, but I thought I'd mention. I really like how the look of it came out, and I'd love to see some testing done with it to see how it performs.

First off, thank you for the input and help! 🙂 I have never tried to key a guard like that, I’ll have to try that on my next one that has a guard with it. And I agree with you on the threaded tang; threading the tang in the way I did in the video isnt a very good solution for a sword you’re gonna be using to cut with. This one was my first sword so I didn’t care too much about how it performed haha; the heat treat didn’t go right for me so I didn’t even sharpen it. I’ve done a couple katanas that I have spent the time to actually have them perform nice, and I’ve really enjoyed that. I actually have a video coming out soon for my katana project, I just have to fix a few things on the handle first and then it’ll be out 🙂 it’ll have a good cutting test section in that video - God bless! -IZ

you waste a tremendous amount of time and work not having a flat belt grinder and a platen and a bevel jig. You have a tremendous work ethic. Praise God for that. lets just try and get things going in the right direction to use that more wisely. Also, you are MUCH better off hot cutting the leaf spring into bar stock. I have 4 tons of leaf spring in my back yard. I know whereof what I speak. :-) keep at it my young friend. you are doing very well, all things considered!!!!

Please reply. What is the material you used? Did you test it for destruction and sharpness? Because I liked your process, but did not test it fully

  • @IanZ_Forge

I used 5160 from a leafspring, and I did not test for sharpness, I actually didn't even sharpen it because I planned on hanging it in my workshop on the wall. As for the quality of the steel, 5160 is a very good steel for making swords, it will hold an edge very well if heat treated properly. It also has just low enough carbon to be durable. Thanks, God bless -Ian :)

I own a 5160 jian and this thing is a beast. Stiff but will flex and go back to normal rather than break. Good edge retention as well. I feel i could abuse this sword a LOT. I once chopped a 2x4 piece of wood with it (a single hit can go 1/3 of the way in!) and it didn't change anything. My sword has a ''battle edge'' though, which means it cuts but it's not razor sharp, so damage to the edge is way less likely.
