Me: ''Mom, why are you leaving?'' Mom: ''Your dad is playing bass again.''
Says he's an Ampeg guy, chooses a Mesa

I was thinking that too... "Uhhhhh.... there's a knob for that....."
That was one of my favorite videos of yours. I love seeing the back and forth of the creative process.
Followed this to the T and I have to say I am pleased.... to announce that my 200 cheapo bass will never sound like a stingray. kidding aside, I did manage to get a great bass tone with this on helix native. Different amp and all of that, but when you're working with software that reacts more like an actual rig than "plug and play" vst's and the such, the theory is important to figure out how to get things. Mic bass is probably far too compressed, but i'm aiming for a type of tone and mix ready stuff. Great Tutorial!
thanks for the video fluff I'm starting out on bass and am currently getting a better set up so this helps with bass tone ideas
Love Stingrays - and the Helix is an awesome unit, especially for bass! SVT
Just ordered my Helix today!
the secret to the darkglass is the switches. would have been less muddy with the grunt switch off.

Thanks Fluff. I'm really digging the Agui51 (Aguilar) bass model with the LA2A.
So are there no blackstar sims?

Of course not! Blackstar sucks...
Thanks for the information dad
That DI sounds amazing tbh
The tube screamer sounded gorgeous. I’ll have to experiment with that one of these days.
Not a fan of overly distorted bass tones either. Just a little grit if needed....
distortion bass? you must split signal. first signal - high and mid (300Hz300Hz) - clean signal. Optional Compression if you want. Mix both signal and add some amp + cab
nice work!!!!
This is a very good guide to get a usable generic tone that can fit most genres, there is nothing wrong with this. I'm glad you decided to use a most more cutting clean signal instead of the two signal chains with a distorted high end, such as the guide from Gear Gods which I believe is terrible. Only thing I would suggest is more mids! Mids are everything but the scooping is most likely due to the pickups selection. This tone is similar to a Slipknot sounds, if you were to pick a bit harder is would be Identical. Good job on this one! Edit: I preferred the 8x10 sounded much more clear and pronounced; would have been better in a mix to cut through and be heard.
I've been looking for a Helix video about bass... using a stingray... in that pickup position. Thanks!
Hi I’m a huge fan
With the actual Darkglass pedal and the Helix sim, your friend here is the blend and mostly I have this turned to about 25% then dial in the amount of dirt and distortion I want. What you’re trying to do here is copy how a bass tone is created by studio engineers where they only use a very thin amount of bass distortion and leave the bass’s tone to be the bass.
"trust me it's here" i trust you fluff... i trust you
It's nice to see you didn't do the same technique as the dude on Gear Gods. That terrible "Split the bass into 2 tracks for highs and lows and just distort the highs". Sounds like crap but everyone uses it. Nice to see a good old fashioned bass tone!

TheRealMikeShea I’ve tried both, and it it seems easier to me just to use 1 amp and get a decent “gritty” tone vs blending 2 tracks. I think for super heavy metal though 2 tracks is the only way to get it to cut through the mix well enough

That's because it works? Everyone does this for a reason. It keeps your low end mixed perfectly. That way you aren't distorting the low end and making the whole mix fall apart.

I'm certain it had been done with one bass track in a lot of your favourite metal songs pre-2005. To me, splitting it sounds like crap. And I mean, this is metal we're talking about. It's supposed to be a little chaotic. When metal is too clean it's a little boring.

I agree the Gear Gods one sounded horrible, but if you do it right and just use the second (high end track) to cut through rather than boosting it up so much that you can hear it over the original than it sounds really good... just a little more dirt and a lot more high end on the second track but way less volume and you get the thickness and punch of the original track but it cuts through a little better, imo its better than just trying to use one track

I'm content using one track. The double sounds unnatural. I dunno there's something off about it. It's not inspiring.
I like this bass tone way better than this modern style distorted high and seperate low frequency split technique
Can we have an SVT video? Nobody puts them up for some reason.

I will be putting out 12 in like 2 weeks, all amplitude 3 Svt-4 pro
The darkglass patch works best w/ the distortion off, and just boost & shape the hell outta the sound w/ the options.
Not sure about the helix but on fractal gear, you have to set the gain super low on the b7k model. Otherwise it's just a mess
More bass video PLEASEEE
You ever going to make one of these for guitar?
Thoughts on Sebring guitars?
Fluff, how tall are you? You make that bass look like a short scale. Thanks for all you do

Would love to see something like this for finger-style non-metal bass tone.
What tuning is it? Sounds so lowww.. anyway, I hope you make more catching tone video like this Fluff!

Looks and sounds like drop B
Is there a sansamp distortion pedal in native?
will this all work with the helix floor? How would it be different?
@GillRigged
2 жыл бұрын
Basically the samething. Think of the Helix Floor as a Helix Rack with pedal board.
Love the vids, but do you make any tones with cheap af, old, non name brand, really should be replaced in a couple years, guitar or bass?😂 Helped me get the guitar tone after a 12hr session of ear fatigue yesterday, even though I went with the VH4. Now to get this Jazz Humb active 'douglas' 5 string to sound like Justin Chancellor... See you after insanity from obsessive failure?

Its almost like Vanilla Ice was brought in to name them..."they're not the same!!"
i wish i had an Ernie Ball endorsement or some sort of connection to the EBMM R&D department for custom wack basses
8x10 sounded much clearer I think.
I'm not hating or anything, big fan of your work, but could you please play something other than the pentatonic scale, or at least play the pentatonic in a proper key XD

It's a tone test, not a jazz recital.
You’re the expert, but it seems like you’re doing a lot of tweaking before the other instruments even come into play... maybe a video of this in a mix?
Ampeg 6x10 does it.
Cleaner than I thought but so punchy. I can't really stand those "I am a bass and so damn distorted" tones anyway. Most of the time it sounds like a broken guitar, not like a driving rhythm instrument. I dig it and will try it out next rehearsal. Thx a lot!
And how about using a real pedal? I know it defeats the purpose of the helix but it saves a lot of hassle imo
the 8x10 sounded way more clear and not muddy
This is a much better bass sound than the usual "raw signal + hp/lp filters + 2nd track of mids set to awful noise + compression." Although a little of that welcome in heavier parts as far as a mix, but even then a little more effort on the distorted bass track goes a long way. That approach wasn't a bad way for me to learn for mixing purposes early on, and it works, but so many people are doing it now and it's sucking something out of the personality of the bass. Or maybe I'm just Fluff's generation and too old to know better. Great patch
yeah, next time set the distortion pedal with the fkn cab enabled !!! wtf u doin man
i played a stingray straight into an amp for 40 years. you have to learn to make the sounds with your hands. i play through a tech21 flyrig straight into pa back to ears now. sounds more natural than anything else i played. the helix feels like you are triggering sounds like on a keyboard instead of producing tone with your fingers.

I'm pretty sure Ryan Martini never used any affects aswell. I have also learned that so much of what I was looking for was all in my right hand(I'm right handed). How you approach the string with your fingers to where you play, towards neck vs towards the bridge. Sliding off the string like upright bassists or digging in with the finger tips for more of a pick sounding attack. So much tone comes from the fingers.

So you sounded boring for 40 years, ok. Please tell me how one would achieve distortion (proper distortion) or modulation effects with fingers? Some of us use those too believe it or not
I thought this was a video tutorial on how to get Helix bass tone. " GIVE ME AN R! O! C! K!I was a little disappointed. Jk.
gear god made it first. but still good video.

Piston Honda it can be possible. 😀
dude, repost that video after you turn your vocal mic down, tooo friggin hot bro! I had to keep turning down your voice when you talked and turned up the volume when you played
Ampeg is the true bass tone. If u cant find a tone u like, ur not using ur ampeg head properly. Ampeg Blue heritage 1970, they weigh, like , 600lb. Lol
Watching someone dial in bass tone? Sorry I have grass to watch grow.
You should try an Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling. I think that would fit your tone great.
Well that was underwhelming
Your videos are very educational. But they would be so much better if you stop playing that metal crap for demos unless you can do something with actual melody like AC/DC.
Do you need to make the same video as every youtubers? That sad that now you are like all the others...
@dekhruel
6 жыл бұрын
Like all the other ones. I love your channel don't worry but you're now becoming like all the others with all those sponsors. Every weeks we see 20 times the same demo from 20 different youtubers. Line 6 Helix, Speakers, bass, guitars... Every knowed youtubers receive those.
I really like your videos, but this sucks. Why don't you get a decent bassplayer and do it with him?
informative but frustrating to watch
This sounds terrible!
