Followed this to the T and I have to say I am pleased.... to announce that my 200 cheapo bass will never sound like a stingray. kidding aside, I did manage to get a great bass tone with this on helix native. Different amp and all of that, but when you're working with software that reacts more like an actual rig than "plug and play" vst's and the such, the theory is important to figure out how to get things. Mic bass is probably far too compressed, but i'm aiming for a type of tone and mix ready stuff. Great Tutorial!

distortion bass? you must split signal. first signal - high and mid (300Hz300Hz) - clean signal. Optional Compression if you want. Mix both signal and add some amp + cab

This is a very good guide to get a usable generic tone that can fit most genres, there is nothing wrong with this. I'm glad you decided to use a most more cutting clean signal instead of the two signal chains with a distorted high end, such as the guide from Gear Gods which I believe is terrible. Only thing I would suggest is more mids! Mids are everything but the scooping is most likely due to the pickups selection. This tone is similar to a Slipknot sounds, if you were to pick a bit harder is would be Identical. Good job on this one! Edit: I preferred the 8x10 sounded much more clear and pronounced; would have been better in a mix to cut through and be heard.

With the actual Darkglass pedal and the Helix sim, your friend here is the blend and mostly I have this turned to about 25% then dial in the amount of dirt and distortion I want. What you’re trying to do here is copy how a bass tone is created by studio engineers where they only use a very thin amount of bass distortion and leave the bass’s tone to be the bass.

It's nice to see you didn't do the same technique as the dude on Gear Gods. That terrible "Split the bass into 2 tracks for highs and lows and just distort the highs". Sounds like crap but everyone uses it. Nice to see a good old fashioned bass tone!

TheRealMikeShea I’ve tried both, and it it seems easier to me just to use 1 amp and get a decent “gritty” tone vs blending 2 tracks. I think for super heavy metal though 2 tracks is the only way to get it to cut through the mix well enough

  • @AscentToZenith

That's because it works? Everyone does this for a reason. It keeps your low end mixed perfectly. That way you aren't distorting the low end and making the whole mix fall apart.

I'm certain it had been done with one bass track in a lot of your favourite metal songs pre-2005. To me, splitting it sounds like crap. And I mean, this is metal we're talking about. It's supposed to be a little chaotic. When metal is too clean it's a little boring.

  • @austinmoser5056

I agree the Gear Gods one sounded horrible, but if you do it right and just use the second (high end track) to cut through rather than boosting it up so much that you can hear it over the original than it sounds really good... just a little more dirt and a lot more high end on the second track but way less volume and you get the thickness and punch of the original track but it cuts through a little better, imo its better than just trying to use one track

  • @Just-Michael

Now to get this Jazz Humb active 'douglas' 5 string to sound like Justin Chancellor... See you after insanity from obsessive failure?

Cleaner than I thought but so punchy. I can't really stand those "I am a bass and so damn distorted" tones anyway. Most of the time it sounds like a broken guitar, not like a driving rhythm instrument. I dig it and will try it out next rehearsal. Thx a lot!

This is a much better bass sound than the usual "raw signal + hp/lp filters + 2nd track of mids set to awful noise + compression." Although a little of that welcome in heavier parts as far as a mix, but even then a little more effort on the distorted bass track goes a long way. That approach wasn't a bad way for me to learn for mixing purposes early on, and it works, but so many people are doing it now and it's sucking something out of the personality of the bass. Or maybe I'm just Fluff's generation and too old to know better. Great patch

i played a stingray straight into an amp for 40 years. you have to learn to make the sounds with your hands. i play through a tech21 flyrig straight into pa back to ears now. sounds more natural than anything else i played. the helix feels like you are triggering sounds like on a keyboard instead of producing tone with your fingers.

I'm pretty sure Ryan Martini never used any affects aswell. I have also learned that so much of what I was looking for was all in my right hand(I'm right handed). How you approach the string with your fingers to where you play, towards neck vs towards the bridge. Sliding off the string like upright bassists or digging in with the finger tips for more of a pick sounding attack. So much tone comes from the fingers.
