Making A Gothic Victorian Gown // Making Bustle Era Skirts
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Today it's the bustle hustle...
Sorry, I had to. I do apologize this video is a bit shorter than the last few, but luckily these Victorian skirts do go together quite quickly, and of course in my rush I unfortunately didn't get as much filmed of the sewing process as usual. I hope you are all staying safe and are taking time for yourselves during these stressful days.

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

1885 looks fabulous on you!!! You really do pull this off so well. I know you love the more recent era clothing but Girl you totally pull this off so well!! I watch a lot of Victorian and regency costumers. And I have to say You make it work some how!! They look modern in vintage wear but you look the part!!! I am so in awe!! Oh and totally keep the intro. I love it. The music the lighting!!! So you. Thanks for sharing your work with us.

You look stunning. Your sewing skills and tutorials are remarkable. I have collected vintage fashion for forty years. I have about 1000 garments dating from 1860-1960. Your attention to detail is amazing. I was a re-enact or as well as a tour guide and docent for architectural tours and always wore an appropriate, original outfit. I later produced several vintage clothing fashion shows for various charities and worked at several museums. I am not able to do that anymore. So, you definitely provide me with an outlet for my love of costume and fashion. I look forward to all your posts. Thank you.

This is a work of art! The fitting is superb, your stitching skills are excellent, the colour scheme really suits you and the embellishing brings it all together. I would love to see you work with the rich jewel colours such as ruby, dark purple and sapphire. Please may we have more historical gowns with a gothic edge to them. It was also good to see longer videos. I loved it !!

Luxurious taffeta is the perfect choice for any bustle skirt because of the way that it bends and moves the light around it. Because of that, I vote for more ribbons...a gal can't have enough sparkle. I loved it last week and loving it more in the light of day. Brava!

Thanks Rob! I kinda want a super giant bow like I've seen in some fashion plates, so I hope I have enough fabric at the end to make one 😅
TV have good patterns based on actually patterns from magazines - they are newbie friendly, but they sometimes leave things unsaid like how to finish the waistband - I was lucky to have a grandma to tech me.

Very nicely done! I for one have no election anxiety to be distracted from, as I am completely non political and quite anarchistly leaning, but always delight in watching beautiful gowns being beautifully crafted. Can't wait for the continuation of this series, as well as watching your "vintage" videos in the interim
I'm not blaming you Bianca, because there are many sewists who sew over pins, but I was sewing a slip (based on your 20's slip but actually completely different) out of some 70's nylon (in a crazy Alphonse Mucha meets Joan Miro print) and I sewed over a pin and my thin needle bent into a 90° angle! I love the asymmetrical overskirt, I think more trim and bows and ruffles are period correct, but I really like the sort of "minimalist" feel of your dress. It seems modern and almost futurist in a way.
@TheClosetHistorian
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Natalie! There were definitely more "minimal" sleek designs in the later half of the 1880's too, so both are accurate, and I like both too so it's hard to choose!

I’m so glad you did this video as well! I think it would be wise to wait until you’ve done the other bodices before deciding on additional trimmings, as you suggested. Although for now it looks so good just with that one bow. And I’ll watch pretty much any video you put out - if you always did the same thing you’ll never learn anything new, and neither will we! The intro and the exit music was great! Really set the mood. The gown came out beautifully and the colors look great on you. Having the two bows, in my opinion, made it look more like a Southern belle style. I think one bow with the streamers would look better, unless a Southern belle is what you wanted it to look like. Thank you Rhonda! I actually really like sewing with taffeta, silk or otherwise, as it is so crisp and almost "papery" to work with, it behaves quite well usually I find. The only thing is the fraying, but if I'm working in poly I serge and get on with it, or even in silk it's still quite manageable even if I have to be cautious!

They don´t make sewing machines like they used to anymore, an old (good) one that´s been taken care of with love (and knowledge) will last for generations! My grandma has one that´s somewhere around 150 years old now, with a foot pedal, still works and it will sew through materials that mine wont ;D she taught me how to care for it very early on, I´m lucky enough to inherit it when that sad day comes.... I´m like you, I sew over the pins too, even tho I know I shouldn´t....but it works, so why not! ;D Back to your AMAZING dress!!! I am SO in love with it! I love everything about it, everything but the color, I am so sorry, I hope that doesn´t offend you....in my head it´s plum/eggplant, but that´s more of a question of taste in color, it sure doesn´t change the fact that this masterpiece is just that, a masterpiece! :) 💜 It´s become a goal of mine now to own a dress like this! even if I don´t have any occasion to wear it, I can always play dress up at home :D I wish I had your sewing skills....if I would give this a try, it would take me months (if not a year or more) but it would be worth it....I feel like I have to give it a go :D 💜💜💜 Looking forward to see the rest :) and your upcoming projects! SO inspiring! 💜
