HEY EVERYONE!
Chess sets are Amazing objects and a luxury chess set that has been custom designed and hand made out of beautiful woods can cost several hundred and sometimes thousands of dollars. But many who could make a chess set are afraid of the challenge because of the time and care required in the process. In this video I show the process of making the Rooks for a large Staunton chess set that I designed. Wood turning and carving chess pieces is a fun and rewarding process. I hope you enjoy this video and perhaps gain a bit of understanding from this project... and who knows... maybe some of you will finally be brave enough to do it yourself!

Hi guys! Conrad Craft here.
Making a Giant Chess set has always been a project I knew I would do some day. You all know about Some Day right? Its going to be a pretty busy day whenever it gets here... anyway.........
...When a client in New York Contacted me requesting a giant custom chess board and set of pieces, suddenly Someday was here.
This Large set will have a chess board that is 26 inches X 26 inches (including the border). The checker board playing surface will measure 24 inches X 24 inches... making the individual squares equal 3 inches X 3 Inches. The Chessmen will be based on my own slight modification of the traditional Staunton Chess set shapes. Obviously, Since I am hand turning and hand carving these chess pieces, perfect uniformity will not be possible (I'm not that skilled yet) but I will be using wood turning techniques and Carving techniques that increase the chances of getting as close to uniform as I can.
The Woods I am using are African Mahogany for the dark squares on the game board and for the dark game pieces, and Maple For the light Game board squares and light game pieces. For the price, these woods work down exceedingly well with basic shop tools and are relatively easy to carve and shape with hand tools... not to mention how beautiful they are as woods in general and how well they seem to work together for this project. I highly recommend using these two species on your next Makers Project or DIY.

mrtumbleweed001 Why thank you kind sir. My goal is always to be bold... Go ahead and make bold cuts... Make shavings... Take off wood and not just nibble away. You really learn what your tools can and can't do when you are willing to stretch yourself first as a craftsman and get outside your comfort zone. Best wishes to you in your endeavors!

You're more than talented enough to make six cuts and avoid all that "tear out". Any type of sacrificial backing would do the same a little piece of scrap in the back of the V on your sled. Great work God bless

Tim7of7 it's a nice thought... And I appreciate the complement... But I am afraid making six cuts creates the same quantity if tear out as three cuts... It simply Moves all the tear out to the inside of the parapet walls instead of being alternated between some tear out inside the wall cornelations and some outside the wall cornelations. Think about it for a bit and you will see what I mean. Wrapping the rook head in tape is probably the best way to reduce tear out I think. Thanks for the ideas! Best regards, Conrad Craft

Wow your lathe has a ton of runout! I've seen rooks with 4 to 8 slits in the top, so I suppose 6 is OK.
How much is the price if shipped to Egypt
I would like to purchase this large Chess set, pieces and board! How much!??
I've been following each video in this series and what I'm interested in is how long the entire project will take you approximately? Also have you made a set before? Are you a full time woodworker or is it a hobby? Keep up the good work! Cheers Sean

The Bungling Woodworker ...Hi Sean, thanks for the questions and for keeping up with my videos. To give you some answers... I am an Entrepreneur and have been a professional woodworker and Carpenter for 15 years. Along with wood working, I also am a professional beekeeping consultant, I am a Texas certified Master Gardener, I have a degree in Music Performance and have been a private music teacher for over 12 years, and if it isn't already painfully obvious, I kinda collect hobbies as a hobby. lol. anyway... I have turned Chess pieces before but this is the largest chess set project I have ever done. the whole process I went through ( buying the wood, ripping it all down, building and finishing the board, turning,carving, and finishing the pieces...ect...) takes about 2 to 3 solid weeks of work... mainly because there are several steps that are tedious (carving the knights) as well as having steps that require glue-ups to cure before work can be continued. hope I answered your questions! Hi Conrad, if that is your actual name?? I have recently started turning and am having a lot of fun. My problem is confidence. I don't know what anyone could learn from me! I know that is negative however I need to just suck up the courage and give it a go, I suppose? You have more jobs than I have socks..🙄🙄🙄. Take it easy, Sean

I understand the confidence issue, but interestingly enough, watching someone do something for the first time is often more interesting than seeing a pro do it. People relate to a novice more than a pro and get inspired to give it a try because they can say " that guy is just like me, if he can do it, so can I!". You totally should take a whack at it... I keep watching these videos not only to learn but to see if one day you will get a set of tightening levers for your chuck. I'm surprised you still have your teeth hand tightening the chuck like you do.

Hahaha.... So i did and do use them... But some how that got cut out when I edited.didn't even notice. It really does look like I just hand tightened that. The hand tightening stuff was just for positioning the blank for the least bit of wobble. That was funny... Good catch.
Please, is there any way to have you make an oversized set for me to purchase?

Ebony is sold by weight...not by board ft. Because of its density and beauty it is one of the most expensive woods... Boxwood is more reasonable. Honestly for me to make a set with matching board out of those woods you are looking at a price tag close to $1200.
