Making a Double Walled Teapot
I have been looking for non-speaking pottery videos to fall asleep too.. and got tired of waiting so i decided to make my own. Sit back, relax and enjoy 55 minutes of making a double walled teapot. No music, no talking just the sounds of the studio.
If you are not in the mood to fall asleep with this playing in the background, i hope you were able to gain a good insight into how i make my double walled forms. I generally post sped up versions.. but this is a (mostly) uncut and shows the whole process. If you want more instructional videos, head to my Instagram: / bellhillpottery
You will find voice over versions of various forms under my Reels. I will be posting those same videos to my Shorts on KZread in the next few weeks.
I am thinking about putting one out each week or every other week. Let me know if you want to see more of these videos and how often.
I want to hear what object you would like to see next!

It's a beautiful teapot, and the double wall feature is quite practical for keeping the tea warm. But that type of spout is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to keep clean if you use it much at all. Maybe that doesn't bother most people, but I'm kinda OCD about that kind of thing. I'd rather have a spout that's accessible for cleaning and just use a tea strainer.
Impressive work. So enjoyable to watch your process. Kudos & respect.

Just assuming this is a semi functional or non-functional teapot? It's such a cool idea to have double walls, (I originally thought for insulation) but then to punch holes in it was perplexing but super nifty at the same time design-wise. The spout though! Super cool idea, but how on earth will you clean the dead area between the walls below the holes inside the spout? Tea will puddle down there and get gross with no way of properly cleaning it? Overall genius though! Thanks for sharing, you are brilliant!
@bellhillpottery
Жыл бұрын
You are not the first person to say that but I have a question for you.. Why would tea puddle there? Just rinse the pot out. Have it dry upside down. If there is water left in there for some reason it’s just water. No gross tea water. I’ve made thousands of teapots at this point. Mostly single walled but have the same spout and I have never heard anyone complain until this video.. which is perplexing and surprising to me. I do appreciate the concern but I am also confused by it.

Can one make an instant leather suface on regular stoneware clay like this? And what are the benefits of having two walls, just heat protection?
@bellhillpottery
Жыл бұрын
its significantly easier to do this on stoneware/terracotta then it is on porcelain so have at it! Porcelain starts popping in shards if you heat it for to long.. you can torch that crap out of stoneware for as long as you want with no real downside (besides getting to dry). well the double walled really holds no purpose outside aesthetics for teapots like this. I started making double walled forms for my shiboridashi and guinomi but decided i like the forms and the challenge so much i just do it for everything now. It was a means to stop your hands from burning.. so on this it is only pretty since you wouldn't be holding the pot itself. Hope that helps!

@@bellhillpottery Thank you! Last question I just thought of, when burning the finished double wall doesn't the whole thing explode like a bubble in the clay would?
@victoriabaker4400

@@whackycracker1987 He doesn't trap air in the double wall-- the bottom is open so you can see the construction. I use 92700 porcelain from Sheffield Pottery. Its a cone 10 porcelain body that i recently have been mixing in 25% silica sand to the weight of clay to add more texture. you know.. dug clay is rough. I had a buddy bring me some unprocessed clay he found locally a few weeks ago. I proceed it but boy it was hard to work with. It would do what you are talking about.. very brittle while throwing with it.. cracked constantly.. I ended up adding a decent amount of ball clay to it so it threw a little better. It was low fire clay too so it doesn't really work for what i am doing but it was fun to do! What temperature/cone does your dug clay fire to?

@bellhillpottery
Жыл бұрын
you really should try a top handle teapot first before making the assumption. Not all top handled teapots are the same either so you'd have to buy one of mine to try. it is actually easier on your wrists and easier to pour then a back handled teapot would be. Think about the weight (there are two walls) and then think about that full of tea. Your wrist would be struggling with a back handled teapot. In fact i am always shocked when i see a larger teapot with a back handle. It not ergonomic at all. I appreciate the input but you should try one first before saying one is easier or better then the other.
