Making a DIY Slide for Kids in My Back Garden

I made an aluminium slide for my kids but it is more than strong enough to hold my weight too. Now my kids barely ever use the steps to go down!
I hate how store bought plastic slides lose color in the sun, so I could not go with anything else but aluminium.
The supplies cost me ~$60; the cheapest metal slide I could find to buy was $670.

For the ones concerned with sharp edges, there are none. All the edges are either rolled or filed -- I mentioned this in the video. I would not let my kids near anything I would not think was reasonably safe. It's been two years now and no incidents.

Love all the sharp edges! Once they get cut a few times when they are young, they learn to be more careful. A few pints of lost blood never killed anyone.

Hey man. For all the sharp corner comments, I have your fix. I worked on airplanes and did some interior panel work. Rough edges leave weak points that repeated stress will create cracks at. File the edges with a rough file, then repeat with a smoother file, then go back with Scotch brite and buff that edge buttery smooth. You will loose the polished appearance but running your finger over it will give you all the good feels :-) Thanks for sharing!

For all the people with sharp edges... Obviously it's safe, dude came up with an awesome idea so you can save some money. Just take the Idea and shut up. Leave stupid comments for yourself, if you like it build it if you don't like or are worried about sharp edges (which there's none) go buy a slide for 500 bucks. He's trying to help, be kind.

This is awesome. Plastic slides are so expensive so I was looking for an alternative. This is one of the best options I've seen!

Good video, thank you. I'm with you I can't bring myself to pay a ton of money when I can build it for a fraction of the cost.

probably put a little bit of foam on the end piece of the guard rail /fence on the stairs just incase they slip and hit their heads on that edge as it sticks out

How thick was your sheet metal? Not sure what thickness is ideal...

0.9mm. You could go up to 1.2mm but no need for any more. I would not go below 0.9mm either.

No problems with the sharp edges?

I had to bend the top corners (as you can see in 6:00 ) which I haven't shown but other than that, no problems. I made pretty sure to either round the edges or blunt them with a file

Try and google sheet aluminium. I shopped around and got it from a dealer with the most reasonable shipping cost

Hi, it's .9mm. Sorry about the quality of the narration! it was my second video ever, so I was still a bit self conscious about the sound my own voice recording... Out of interest, I turned on the autogenerated subtitless and the AI does not even thing that I said a number there!

Did it get really hot with the sun?

I live in Scotland, so +25 is really hot for the local standards! In my case the slide faces North, so it would never get direct sunlight. But it is a fair point, as any metal, such slide could get hot in other parts of the world.
