How to Bend Wood into a Slide!
Ойын-сауық
This is our entry for the Rockler Bent Wood Challenge hosted by Mike, Ben and Chris over at the Modern Maker Podcast.
We've never really tried any techniques to bend wood, so we figured we'd use this as a learning experience and designed this wooden slide to incorporate 3 different bending techniques.
We used kerf cutting to create a number of grooves in birch plywood to create curved corners to the steps. We filled these with white epoxy resin and used our track saw to create plunge cuts, which allowed us to glue in a reinforcing piece of hardwood.
For the slide we laminated 6 layers of 4mm birch plywood together, using a two-part form that we made. This was finished using a combination of varnish and wax to give a super smooth surface.
For the handles we ripped some ash into 5mm strips and then steamed these for 40 minutes in a polythene bag before clamping them around a form. Once they were dry, we added some glue and re-clamped overnight. This was our first ever go at steam bending in our workshop and we figured out our set up using this video below. Go and check it out if you're interested in a simple way to steam bend wood!

Amazing job guys! Some really nice design details and considerations, from highlighting the kurf cuts to having the handrail travel through the side support and I thought the camera work and editing had massively improved on this one also; really dynamic shots, montages and great music choices! The only thing I would say and have come to learnt is that projects tend to be better when they explore only one concept or technique. It looked like you executed all three really well and learnt a lot, but I think you maybe could have pushed them even further and really expressed some of the intricacies and qualities inherent in the process if you had just focused on one technique, although this being said by the sound of the outro you will be doing this soon!
@BrothersMake
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! For sure we had to cut a lot of the finer details out of the edit simply to make the video flow better. And since this was our first time trying all of these techniques we didn’t want to try make it too much of a ‘how-to’ in case it totally failed! 😂 but we’ll definitely be trying some (or all!) of these again soon. Thanks for noticing the little details! It’s always these little things that take the longest but we find really fun!
Really incredible! I am working on making a (much simpler ha ha) slide right now. Would you be willing to share what varnish/wax you used? I’m stuck on how to make it more slippery. Thank you!
Beautiful! How's it holding up a couple years later?
These boys could be considered avatars with all the bending they’re doing!

Good
Hell of resources required for this diy
@BrothersMake
4 жыл бұрын
Depends on your definition of DIY. We ‘did it ourselves’ so it’s still DIY. We don’t expect others to have the same resources, but at the same time we didn’t start making projects like these when we first started out.
Nice work fellas 👍. You might want to make that door frame a couple of inches taller 🤕😡😀.

Nice design guys! I'd love to see this upscaled to say a 12" high version..(?). Ten foot if your squeamish... at least a 6 or 8 foot high version.

Im struggling to find wipe on poly, do you reckon a few coats of varnish would do the trick with a bit of wax?
@BrothersMake
4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely it would! We can NEVER find wipe on poly in the UK but all you have to do is thin down any regular polyurethane varnish (we used outdoor poly for this one) with mineral spirits (white spirit in the UK). We go for 50/50 and after 3 coats it builds up a decent layer. Plus it dries in under an hour!

“We're using 6 sheets of 4 mm plywood, which gives us about an inch”. The UK is the only country where history and traditions allow for 6 * 4 = 1. But how many stone does it weigh?
@BrothersMake
3 жыл бұрын
1” = 25.4mm 6 x 4mm = 24mm Or: ‘about an inch’ 🤷🏽♂️
