I suggest you to have some basic of Ardupilot, there is pretty nice documentation on their wiki, it could help a lot for a rover related project. Once you have an idea of how to control the robot with gps based then there are many projects you can apply with for example like what I was doing here :) We applied Webrtc and made some UI for a nice interface and that’s pretty much for high level stuff, we are using dronekit python module to communicate with AP side.
