+ Shank insert hole (for stem) : twist drill bit 13/32 (10mm)
+++ ...and reamer bit 13/32 (10mm)
+ Bowl hole : Forstner bit 3/4" (19mm),
+++ ...and Core-Box (round) router bit 3/4" (19mm)

+ Outside shank : Hole-Saw drill bit 7/8 inch (22mm).
+ De-burring / countersink bit 1/2" (optional)
- Hand Saw
- Wood Chisel 3/4" (19mm)
- Wood Rasps (could use files)
- Sand paper (80, 120, 240 grits)

They say ya gotta break some eggs to make an omelet so we'll see how #4 turns out. Each mistake is a lesson learned! Great video! I’m actually using it as a reference for my first pipe I’ve ever made. Question: I can’t figure out how you took the pilot drill bit off of the hole saw bit. Is it a special attachment or a special bit that’s used, or can any hole saw bit do this? I have one, but can’t seem to remove the pilot bit. Any direction would be much appreciated!

  • @OuttheCave

    @OuttheCave

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Christopher, I'm so glad to hear my video is helping you make your first pipe! I have 2 sets of hole saws and both have a set screw on the side (flat head screw) to remove or change the center drill bit. If you do have a screw on the side, try loosening it and the drill bit should fall out. It might be very tight if it was never removed. If the drill bit is not removable, then it will be nearly impossible to use it to make a pipe so you might need to get another one. However, I never seen a hole saw with a fixed center bit. I hope you can solve this and get back to making a pipe! Don't hesitate if you have any other question, I will be happy to help. Cheers!

    Hi and thanks for your comment! This is a Radial Arm Saw. I got mine from my oncle but you can get some used ones for very cheap and the oldest are usually better (at least in Canada and USA). It's really a good option for a small shop where you don't want to have a central table saw permanently. I think they are as safe as table saws once you know how to handle them but it's very different to work with and requires some thinking before trying any new cut (this is the key to safety whatever the tool). Cheers!

    There's a seller on Ebay, called 'Antlers by Cody', who makes pipes out of antler and horn; and, he coats the inside of his pipes with "liquid meerschaum". From what little information I've gathered so far, 'liquid meerschaum' is simply powdered meerschaum, mixed-with a binder; but, I don't yet know what that binder would be. I had wondered if clay might serve similarly.....

    I'm about to make my own pipe and needed to understand how to carve the block of wood, this is the best woodworking video ive ever seen! The plans at the beginning were extremely helpful. I have one question though as someone who has never used a pipe before, can i make the full pipe out of wood? or is there a reason people seem to buy the mouthpiece instead? I know it has a place to hold a filter, but im honestly not worried about that, im perfectly willing to deal with the harshness.

  • @OuttheCave

    @OuttheCave

    7 ай бұрын

    I'm really glad this was helpful! You can certainly make a stem from wood. A lot of people use a piece of tree branch in a shape they like and split it in the middle. Then they carve out the center before re-glueing the 2 halves. I never made one of those but I always think about giving it a try for a wizard type of pipe. The longer the stem, the colder the smoke. About the filter, I'm using it mostly to absorb the condensation humidity that sometimes build into a nasty juice. When I'm out of filters I roll a piece of paper or bark in there. However, having a wood stem is actually a good way to avoid this condensation because the wood will absorbe it. Making your own pipe makes a really rewarding smoke! Cheers!

    @@OuttheCave well I've been through a journey. Carved my pipe out of a block of ash, drilled the holes, and chiseled everything into shape, just need to sand it now. I'm really happy with how it turned out, though my rounding skills with a chisel are not good. The wood stem definitely added a bit of complexity, but that was mostly solved with a longer drill bit. It was difficult to get the holes to line up inside the joint. Making everything else was so painless, I'm really glad I found this video, thank you!

  • @OuttheCave

    @OuttheCave

    7 ай бұрын

    That is good to hear!! Ash is a good wood but start it with slow smokes to build a nice cake and avoid burning it (1/4 bowl, few half bowl, few 3/4 bowl). The trick for lining up the holes (if you ever make a 2nd one) is having a square block to start with and also, once you setup the piece firmly in the drill press, you don't move it until all holes from that directions are done. And how does it smoke?? I bet it's great! Cheers!

    Hi Mick, First, I have to say I had a look at your channel and it's very interesting to see you are into knife making and archery. I, myself, started traditional archery 3 years ago and I love it! I'm also planning to make some knives once I'm done moving my shop. Now to answer your question... Wood lumber is not so easy to order online because of customs and different border regulation. I would try to find a local lumber store or even better, a shop that makes furniture. These furniture shops might have left over cut-outs that they can sell or even give to you. Another option is to find it in the woods and dry it yourself, but this is s whole different sport (and I don't know much about that). If you have no other choice but ordering online, then tell me what country you are in, maybe I can see if I could help you with that. By the way, I'm in Canada. Let me know ! Cheers !

    Thank you for the reply and having a look at my channel. I have been making knives for a couple years now and highly recommend you give it a go. Its cheap to get started with basic tools and like making a pipe, knives make great gifts can become an heirloom passed from father/mother to son/daughter or can be sold. I havent been out with the bow for a while unfortunately but I hope too soon. I have a buddy that makes bows, have you considered having a go at making one? I can think of one furniture shop in town I can try. I am in Australia and there are plenty of trees but I think it takes a long time for wood to dry and the one time I tried it split on me lol so finding some dry wood would be great. I found some proper briar blocks on ETSY and EBay but they are pre-cut to shape and leave little room for creative design.

  • @OuttheCave

    @OuttheCave

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I watched a few videos on making bows. I might try one day. I suggest you check that local furniture shop. And if they don't have what you need, they will probably know how to get it. Also watch out for toxic wood species! I know cherry, maple and briar are ok but if you go with something else, do some research before to make sure it's ok to smoke. If you make a pipe, post a video or let me know how it went for you. I'd like to know. Cheers!!

  • @OuttheCave

    @OuttheCave

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Joseph, It's my pleasure to answer any questions. My initial block of cherry for this kind of pipe is approximately : 1 3/4 inch wide X 2 inch high X 3 inch long. When drilling the outside of the shank, you need to stop a before the outside of the bowl and same goes when drilling the outside of the bowl, you need to stop before hitting the shank. If you draw it on your block, it will be obvious when drilling. If you leave 1/4", you can make a nice rounded transition between the shank and bowl later, when sanding. The dept of the bowl needs to stop right on top of the air hole, coming from the shank and the air hole needs to stop right in the middle of the bowl. This part is tricky and sometimes, you need to drill a little bit more on the bowl, then a bit more in the air hole and repeat a few times so the bowl and the air hole meet just right. It helps to stick a piece of tape on the drill bit not to go too deep. For the shank hole to accept the stem, it will depend on your stem insert and on your filter (if you use any). I hope that helps you in your project and don't hesitate if you have more questions! Cheers!

    Hi, Thanks for your comment. I think this is a very good point to bring up! I am using "RAW linseed oil" (flax seed oil). This oil is non-toxic and perfectly food safe. It takes a long time to dry but leaves a nice finish without altering the wood color. However, be careful not to confuse it with "BOILED linseed oil". This last one is a polymerized version (toxic) to help make it dry faster. I hope this will help in avoiding pipes being made with toxic / boiled linseed oil. Cheers!

To answer your question, my initial width was about 1 5/8" but it will be easier if the exterior of the hole saw is just a bit wider then the block, so the saw dust can get out of the cut. The length can vary, depending on the shank length you want but it will have a limit where the shank will bottom out in that hole saw. I did start with a 3" length. Same with the height, depends how high you want the bowl. But again, could bottom out in the hole saw if too high. Mine was about 2". Hope this makes sense... Cheers!

    Cherry and most fruit trees are non-toxic. I should start working on an apple-tree pipe soon, stay tuned! Cheers!

    If you put the pipe in the vice you would have more control.

    Hi Richard, Thank you for your comment! You are right and sometimes I do use the vise or some clamp. However, I really enjoy sitting down with a piece of wood and shape or smooth things up. On the other hand, I have recently acquire a rubber jaw for my vise that prevents from scratching or cracking the wood. That has surely get me to use the vise more often than before. Cheers!

    Love the way you use the hole saws to get the stem and bowl size and get them round.
