When he died, my mom tasked me with cleaning out some of the junk from the shops and afterwards she said "Well, it's yours now". I have no fucking clue how to use 90% of this stuff... I’ll keep trying but not feeling positive just yet, living in Australia most of our woods are hard woods very hard to make them bend . Ie pallet wood is mostly rubbish knotted pine tho some are hard woods and heavy very heavy to handle, as always a very nice video , thank you and again you still produced a nice bow. 👍

Hey Kramer try backing one with Jute twine from the hobby section at a craft store or walmart. Glue it to the back running tip to tip. I did a hickory pyrimid style bow this way. I used tight bond three to glue it down then used some camo paint on the jute. It finished out at 70lbs at 29" draw. I was shooting for a good bow for Elk hunting. It is a very smooth and quiet shooting bow. I will definantly be backing more bows this way and it looks realy cool.

correct! Pallets are disposable, sacrificial hardware mass produced. even the "good" ones aren't made from anything other than "SPF" - Spruce, Pine, or Fir. all very soft, inexpensive woods. if you were to find a pallet made from something else, it's likely either strip ply (good plywood, but components too small to efficiently re-use) or far chunkier to help it endure months of constant banging, being stabbed, pushed, dragged, stabbed, application of ridiculous forces, and so on.

You should try to put the linseed oil on the wood before the glue. It will do two things. It will reduce the amount of glue, and it will strengthen the wood. You will have less problems with hinging. At least that is what i came out with. The bows are acting much better after using the oil in production... :D

Loved the music! Regarding the tie, I'm assuming you didn't shell out for a pure actual silk tie, but settled for a polyester tie. Effectively, you're just using what is also referred to as "poor man's fiberglass." Any porous cloth set in place with waterproof aliphatic resin glue. You could use any polyester cloth from a fabric store to achieve the same results. But the tie was an interesting take on it! Who among us doesn't have a tie destined for the bin that could be put to this use!

A lot of Euro pallets are made out of Spruce or Hem-Fir, a mix of hemlock and fir cut at the sawmills. So without knowing the species you don't really know the character of the pallet wood that he was using! Better to use some species that you know unless you can tell the difference.

Do you water down the wood glue? Usually the titebond III that I find is much thicker.

As a note, most of the pallets I worked with when I was working in a warehouse were almost certainly pine - they had that distinctive smell every time they cracked, which was often. Makes sense, because pine is much cheaper than hardwoods like oak, and cost is the primary concern when they're making pallets.

@@flyingfish7072 Certainly. Although, we did deal with some pretty heavy appliances - getting them on and off the pallets without breaking anything was a challenge.

go to The bowyers edge with Dean Torges /patching a bow limb. Just a short period of time to fix such things as a nail hole in the edge of a bow limb.

If you cut the tie right and overlap it on the back of the riser, you can make it work for the full length of the bow. I think the one I made is 70" tip to tip if not 72". It is at my cabin 2 1/2 hours away right now, so I can't say for sure. You have to be careful with maple in compression as well. I got the same fractures on a maple board bow that I tried backing with hickory. The hickory overpowered the maple and I ended up with stress fractures like the one you showed. I wondered about tha poplar one. There is probably a reason why we haven't heard much about poplar bows, lol! Still a great educational video though.
