So many people don't realise that baking was/is used by stage performers where hot and bright lights are used. It's not something the average makeup consumer requires!

Right. You watch a drag artist get ready. They pile on the products and bake. It's beautiful from far away bc that's how it's intended to be viewed.

I'm open to doing something else but honestly, setting my under eye concealer with powder applied with a damp sponge is the only way I've gotten it to look good. I don't leave it to bake but a sponge is the fastest and easiest way I've found to get ready for work without worrying about my makeup looking busted at the end of the day.

Rebekah N I’ve started doing that too right where the creases usually appear. Baking makes my skin look incredibly dry and flaky up close. I used to bake because I thought that’s how you were “supposed” to do it. I’m glad I listened to my skin though

also there are distincts types of makeup: daytime, night out, camera-ready (when these 2 mixed together drag makeup comes out) makeup. all look good when wearing to appropriate occasions. just like you wouldn't wear pijama to a black tie event, some women need to know they don't need night out camera ready makeup for a day. while it can look marvellous with right lights it looks hideous in office or outside. i myself was guilty of it for years

I wish more beauty gurus treated makeup like art. As someone who loves to draw and paint and is very new to playing around with makeup, I find there's a lot to be said about having a strong foundation in at least basic art principles: you see and use makeup as the art form it is, rather than just a mass trend to be copied, and it leads to actually well-composed and creative work.

I just love your content so much!!! I do clientele’s makeup and a lot of them ask me “when are you gonna bake this?” I’m NOT!!!! Not EVER EVER EVERRRTRR! Ever! I politely and playfully tell them “I need you to want my services after today, so for that to happen, I’m gonna do you the favor of not making you look crazy” Many of them say “but the KZread and IG influencers loo...” I IMMEDIATELY CUT THEM OFF... “real life and natural light doesn’t have a softening filter...” Sometimes I get an eye roll or a “but their makeup looks so good...” so I have to do a quick side by side comparison on my own makeup free face, then take pictures and bring them out doors... they’re always so shocked how unwearable and muddy the baked side looks... They also always call for repeat services🤷🏻‍♀️ Sorry for the extra long comment, I just wish people wouldn’t put so much stock into such UNREALISTIC expectations with the way these influencers do their makeup... there are a FEW exceptions, but most of them need to stop. I feel like a lot of them got into social media makeup for free makeup and not for the art and education of it... so then do everyone a favor and go play with your remaining PR, shut off your fkn camera! And leave the rest of the world out of your clownfoolery 🤡🤡🤡🤡

    @sluttymctits4496

I feel kind of weird talking about this on a makeup channel, but congrats! I'm seven years clean myself. Maybe you can relate: after spending so many years in the dark, it was an achievement to get clean, only to find that I'd spend the next several years totally lost and struggling to find myself again. Out of all my searching, I found that focusing on my skin and makeup gave me so much to strive for. It gave me a purpose again. It was something only I could do and I wanted to do it well. I had ignored myself for so long that it was strange to care about my appearance again, but in the end, I'm now stronger and much more confident than I've ever been before. And no joke, Robert and his talents play a huge role in that. When I was younger, I always thought makeup was superficial and was all about ego. In some ways it is, but that's not a bad thing. Makeup can give us a new lease on life, and can give us a boosted sense of self. It can remind us of who we once were, and allow us to become who we want to be. Hope you're doing well, a year after your comment. ✌️ I wish I could help with the foundation question, but I have oily/combo skin. I do find that loading up on hydrating skincare keeps the worst of the dryness away, so maybe that's a small place to start?

Living in Australia, setting spray locks in my make up during summer where the humidity makes you sweat like crazy. However, I also use the skindinavia bridal setting spray that are made for your foundation to stay all day and it will stay locked in for 12 hours. But I only use them in the peak off summer and for the work day. The rest of the year little bit of powder will do you right. If you are in a cooler climate then really you don’t need them.

"Baking" is a technique that was developed decades ago to "set" greasepaint on the stage & in film, as that makeup was oil-based, and would literally melt, particularly under hot lights. This step carried over into "street makeup" in the early days of commercial cosmetics, since those products also tended to be made with mineral oil. Mineral oil, and other petroleum byproducts, are also typically the base ingredient in makeup remover, so it will inherently break down any product on the face. However, over the last decade or so, most brands have moved away from using petrolatum in their products, particularly mid-range and up, so nothing more than the occasional light dusting of powder is necessary. And yes, it is used frequently in "drag" makeup, but drag queens borrowed it from legitimate stage makeup, as many drag queens use thicker, heavier base products, often greasepaint still.

I actually never bake-bake,like layer upon layer, but it does help to an extent. Like I do my eyes before my face. So I put concealor, blend, then put once single but heavy layer of powder underneath my eyes. Then when my eye makeup is done,I just dust it away. This usually helps remove that tricky fallout.

I absolutely HATE color correctors. They're so unnecessary and gimmicky. I agree with everything you said. When I worked for Sephora, people would come in looking for them so they could cover up non existent dark undereyes or surface redness that either could easily be covered up with by using a slightly more yellow foundation or a fuller coverage concealer. Ridiculous how much the social media beauty community has hyped up products that virtually do nothing for most people.

With grainy or tinted powder, even with a light layer of foundation, it can still make me look really cakey until my oils come through.

see this is why I love & respect u so much as a MUA. I'm probly older enough to be ur granny yet u for such a young man u are so wise & inspirational. I hope u dont mind me saying but with u & ur brother being in the beauty industry i get a sense u were brought up by a very classy loving old skool glam mum & nanna? OMG i hope u take this with the praise i want to give & it dont come across patronising. Im not the best at explaining things but i was raised around glamorous ladies so my old skool knowledge came from them i can see it so much in u & ur lovely brother. So many younger MUA get sold on all these fancy gimmick products but u keep it simple but to the point. so much respect 🙏 for u ur blooming 👌 awesome. xxxxxxx

Robert, thank you for explaining the reasons behind your recommendations. Too often we have people telling us what to/not to use but never the why. You give simple and concise explanations but that make perfect sense once you highlight them to us. I’m a new sub’ but in just the few days I’ve been watching your videos, Ive changed so many things when doing my make up and though I say so myself, it’s clearly working so much better for me. I appreciate you!

Been binging on some of your vids tonight. I just started a makeup program a few weeks ago so it's helpful to hear the theory from someone with over a decade of experience. Quality stuff, keep it up 💜

OMG YES! I feel the exact same way about baking and setting spray! I thought I was the only one! Haha. I’ve just found your channel and I’m really enjoying your videos! Can’t wait for more! X

I absolutely agree with everything that you said. I was wondering if I might be missing something, particularly with all of the talk about baking. The validation is nice. Thank you so much for posting this!

I've learned SO much from binge watching your videos in the last week. I've noticed your subbie count is exploding. I subbed when you were at 146k about a week ago, your already over 158k! That's amazing! I'm so here for you teaching us about makeup application and not shilling products! Keep up the great work Robert!

I feel like you just saved my makeup routine. I’ve always been embarrassed talking to people and making eye contact knowing how much my under eye makeup was creased towards the end of the day. I have to stop adding powder there. Thank you!

I love how you explain everything in terms of technic. You don't just say "don't do that because I am a makeup artist and I tell you not to" . You talk about textures and colours and what products actually do,not what they are supposed to do. I feel like people who watch these videos are going to be a lot "smarter" about their makeup. Thank you very much about your honest work.

I'm new to KZread and so happy to have come across Robert Welsh. Thank you for keeping it real. If not for your explanations and suggestions, such as, apply colour correctors under full coverage concealer, then powder boy have I learned so much! I thought I knew it all at 64 but you are so right. A light liquid concealer and that's it. I have to watch all your videos now, for more great tips. Thank you for putting your videos up.

I’m probably not your target audience at 42, but I appreciate your honesty and help. Thanks! I absolutely agree with the baking, it doesn’t look even ok on me and on my 23 and 22 year old daughters don’t even look good in it! As for setting spray I only use a light mist to help the powder look less powdery and I use more as a refreshing mist vs an Urban Decay alcohol spray that dries out skin. I only use a peachy salmon light colored corrected for my melisma a bit under foundation if it’s for an event. At my age the fewer and lighter layers the better🥰 God bless you!

I think there has been so much change in makeup, even since I started doing makeup when I was 18, and I get so many people, 40+ who tell me they’ve been trying all these techniques they see on KZread and feel that makeup is no longer for them because they don’t work so you are my perfect target audience 🖤 it sounds like you know how to do your makeup perfectly already!

I don't do crazy baking on my face, only on my under eyes and sides of the nose (I don't go all the way up to my temples, or chin, forehead etc.), aaand because if I don't bake, my face will quick turn into a grease ball and my bottom lash mascara will transfer and make a big mess! So on my end, baking is definitely a must.
