Maker Workshop - Wind Power Generator on MAKE: television

Taking a motor from an old exercise treadmill and some PVC pipe, John Park constructs a wind-powered generator. The electrical power may not be enough to get your home off the grid, but the great thing about the project is how it explains in simple terms the technology involved in turning wind into free electricity.

it is for any thing that sticks up in the air... The solution is grounding the thing to the ground with heavy cable... Really not a problem, just something that needs to be taken it to account.

@xxwesdogxx It's a motor, a generator is used to convert motion to energy and since a motor does the exact opposite, all you need to do is use it in reverse.

this alternator "back voltage" is called a field. A generator does not have a field. Generators work poorly at low rpms, Alternators work much better at lower rpms. the field is controlled by a voltage regulator (ext. or int.) allowing the alt. to output a very steady voltage in a wide rpm range. The reg. does this by sensing the voltage at the battery. Once the field is energized, it can hook back to itself, it is only needed to begin output. This means a very small starting battery can be used

hey thats actually pretty smart thinking, I don't know the answer but if you use that thing that makes the electricity go one way I suppose it might work. Question I'm dealing with is where can you get some super mass storage battery and also if you could directly apply it for use in your home and you wouldn't have to connect the battery to every single household equipment.

If you have the tools to drill the holes into the flywheel...why not use the mounts you get from old cieling fan blades. I'm actually looking into doing something like that. The Bridge Rectifier is brilliant...one of my hold ups was how to use any motor as a generator rather than having to buy an alternator or something else like that. Thanks for the great vid...this is very useful.

I made one very similar to this one, in fact I might have gotten the idea from this vid. there is no reason to include the flywheel, it weighs at least 5 lbs. blades made from thick pvc require more wind to start than most DIYers can facilitate (tower) A design that used 8 or 10 lightweight blades covering more area would be better to start a treadmill motor IMHO testing vids of my wind generator are on my channel

Another person has pointed out that this tool is currently called a jigsaw. I think I first learned the "sabre saw" name for this tool in the 1960s, and for all I know this name may have been used in North America only. Jig saws had been around for a long time, later ones with electric power. Jig saws typically had a table with a vertical reciprocating blade that was supported from the top by a spring arm. A limiting factor for work size was the "throat", i.e., the distance from the blade to the arm. The breakthrough for the sabre saw was that it had no support arm, no throat limitation, and was highly portable. I think people used the "sabre saw" name to distinguish it from the traditional jig saw. But as far as nomenclature goes, we seem to be losing the distinction.

If he had swapped the leading edge of his blades for the trailing edge, he would have increased efficiency of windpower collection by 331 percent, sice the blade ends would not have been totally vertical, blocking airflow. They'd have been almost horizontal instead which would provide lift-torque......... Venger
