Make Your Own Collage Paper with Just Acrylic Paint and Copy Paper
If you’re wondering how to create beautiful collage papers without needing any skill in painting, or using expensive supplies or specialty paper, in this video I’m going to show you how to make your own collage papers using recycled office copy paper (or scrap paper from your files) and any type of acrylic paint.
I’ll show you exactly how I paint my collage papers, including what kind of paint gets the best result. I’ll also show you how my handmade collage paper looks inside of my own visual journals, combined with the pretty scrapbook papers you might already be familiar with.
Making simple collage papers to use in your art journal, visual journal, collages and in your paintings is so satisfying.
I’m inspired by the Matisse cut paper collages - which he created by painting on paper. YES! Matisse painted his own collage paper and it lead to his most iconic work. If you haven’t yet tried to paint with collage paper, I hope you’ll take away some ideas to get started.
While it’s fun to collect scrapbooking and decorative paper to use for mixed media collage backgrounds, you can easily make your own scrapbook paper, in whatever color palette or design you like best. This collage paper tutorial is perfect for your DIY paper collage paintings, and art journaling, and you’ll be finding new, creative uses for that stack of office copies clogging up your file cabinets.
Thanks for watching! I’d so appreciate your thumbs up if you liked it - and invite you to subscribe to my channel for more mixed media visual journaling tips and tutorials.

@crofts lucy no, I keep sort of a minimalist studio - and I worry what the Mexican heat would do to a gelli plate. But I'd love to try it at someone's studio sometime!

I never thought of using the trash mail I get to make pages. Thanks!
I really needed this video. I'm with hubby at a transplant house for months & my creativity is sparse. So i bought a gelli plate, some Golden paints, & some tissue paper. But now, after making 50 billion pages, I discovered your wonderful video. You'll give me hours more of art therapy. Thank you sooooo much!

Just spent an hour painting on old pages from a book. Thanks for the inspiration and creativity. Keep the videos coming.

Thank you for recycling materials so beautifully.
Beautiful papers. I like making my own painty papers. I reuse the multitude of papers that come with my meds. Most any paper is fair game in my art.

Good for you, Patricia! Any way we can reuse the papers that float into our lives, makes the art all that much more personal and interesting!
Finally found someone with the sense to create collage papers from your recycling. Its amazing how many artists out there use fresh copy paper🤔. Thanks for the inspiration and confirming what I have been doing for a while now, I also use inks and almost any pigment I can find. Its most satisfying when you finish of an ancient tube of paint and create an interesting page.😀😀😀
Great idea for using original artwork for junk journals rather than printing paper which can get very costly.

Wonderful video and inspiring ideas. Thank you so much. Sending you love and peace from London UK ❤

This was exciting to see. Eric Carle did a similar process of painting paper he used for collage. It was really inspiring and I loved the child like creativity in it.

Oh thank you for mentioning, I haven't seen that video but always enjoy following other artists doing similar (and different!) work.
🎨🎨🎨how relaxing that was. I love just splodging around with paint. Shall have a go tomorrow - my Art day this week!
I love paper art but have never considered myself a painter. I see so many collage artists using their painty papers and I have paid for so many digitals. You have given me courage to try. This was very informative and you make it look not only simple but non-intimidating and freeing. I am going to try my first papers this weekend! Thank you!!

⭐️✨❤️Emojis galore! 😄 I could sit here here all day watching you paint, Lisa. I’ve always been curious about your handmade collage papers as I’ve heard you mention them before. This was awesome. Now I know what to do with my orange paint (my least fave colour) because I love brown. I also love how you’ve bound them into a book cover. You’ve given me so many ideas and inspiration. The possibilities are endless. Thank you for making this video and sharing it. 🙏

Thanks, @JennieMaeJune - that's great to know! Living outside the USA I don't have access to all of the total wonderfulness available in pretty papers... this is one way I innovate.
Other than for your journals & scrap books Do you also use these papers in your more high end pieces for collage ?
Thank you! Lisa! Is this process preferable to gel printing? It does look great for collage!💕

that's great! let me know how you do!
I do this with copy paper and magazines. Great way to let the monkey mind go and just have fun 🐒
I uae recycled paper too but I keep sensitive papers separate, and then I sit down & finger gesso paint just those spots that have account numbers or signature. It's fast & easy to cover a pile of sensitive papers that need this spot treatment. Gesso dries fast and these papers can then easily be added to the pile of recycle to be painted.
@LisaSonora

Fantastic idea! This is great if you have gesso, or sometimes I just use whatever paint color I have an excess of and want to use up.
Question, hope this gets to you and I find a reply. How do you stick the papers into the book?

What about archival quality? If it isn't acid free there may be an issue later with sold paintings.
I just came across your website....love listening and following you as you are so calmi8ng and its very meditative. I was looking for how I can make some collage papers for poppies....reds with lights and darks. I just cant seem to get it right. My poppies are large on a large multi media canvas with paint and papers.

So glad you found the videos, too Bronwyn! I hope this one will inspire you to experiment and play, usually my favorite collage papers are the result of "happy accidents".
😁😁😁🤩🤩🤩
I'm always a bit jealous when I see people creating so freely with acrylic paint. I'm always so conscious about the environment. I can't bring myself to clean brushes in the sink for example. Though I love the look of the pages. I have it with other art materials too. It feels a bit restricted nog being able to make a mess or use some materials. Also I was wondering what pens are suitable to journal on acrylic pages? I have uni ball pens, but they look so bright. I like the look of a normal ballpoint pen. Your writing in the Visual Journal Workshop looks like it's written with a normal pen. I am looking forward to your videos, they are very helpful. Thank you Lisa!
@LisaSonora
Жыл бұрын
I feel like you do about cleaning brushes, @Alice - and I use very little water (scarce where I live in Mexico) - so I clean my brushes of on my palette, then on a damp cloth - that gets most all the paint off. I don't dump paint water down the sink. I let it evaporate outside or find a spot in the yard. As for your question about pens: it takes some experimentation. I think the Posca markers are great for painted lines, and a sparpie pen - water based for writing. Sometimes gel pens work... it depends.
🌺🦋
So I do have a question, if you are using these papers for collage, why paint both sides? You won't see the other side once its collaged.
@LisaSonora
Жыл бұрын
Great question, @rosiescreativewings - I paint both sides for a few reasons: 1. to have a variety of options 2. to make the paper a bit sturdier 3. I paint a LOT, so always like to use up my paint this way. 4. I was painting over old bank statements, so wanted all of the info painted over. :) Of course, painting just one side is just fine. Whatever works best for your needs.
