I use ratchet straps to get compression. it takes less than a minute to tighten them down or take them off. I discovered this when i started to wear through an old layered target but didn't want to buy a new one. That is my preferred method for compression.

I made a target like this roughly 13 years ago. The arrows get stopped by the compression just like The Block targets. It's cheap and pretty easy to make. Bonus is you can make as big as you want. Next time I will put it on wheels to move it around yard for various angles and treestand practice

I did this using 1/2 inch all thread a stack of carpet that was around 40 inches tall and I also used 4×4s then compressed down to 20 inches to stop my 10 p0int crossbow 400 fps my bolts bury almost to the fletchings. My 70lb bow only penetrated about 8 inches. Planning on adding another set of 4x4s and 2 more all treads to tighten center of the target to get less penetration from bolts

I’ve had a block for 5 years now but heck yeah for the person with the material going to not move to around this is great.. I’ve seen cardboard boxes wrapped with duct tape and filled with strips of old clothing . I have a block because it’s light and I can easily carry and throw it in my truck . Otherwise I ll keep using bails of hay is the easiest way to get right into shooting quickly but I like this idea .

I just finished making target from the old carpet that I found on somebody's driveway. I cut it to the long stripes 8 inches wide, then rolled in one big roll (with 1*1 inch piece of wood in a center) and tightened with ratchet straps. I had those straps for many years, and never used them. Otherwise maybe it's not wise to buy straps for such purpose, cause they might get destroyed. Total diameter is about 18 inches. Stops arrows good.

So my thought is has anyone tried using a wood frame w/ a bundle of rockwool as the stuffing and an easy to change front face made of cardboard.. any sound opinions?

Replace the top piece when tatty. Job sorted.

Yeah, I'd like to know how much this thing is eating the arrows, especially after a whole summer of practice. I once put bare carpet on a hardwood floor to temporarily cover it, when we moved it about six months later, it had 'sanded' into the hardwood. I had to pay to have the floor refinished! For $10 a piece, I'll stick with picking up a couple of those foam/plastic targets from WalMart! Be well, Don
