I always remove the egg membranes. Once dry, they're pretty easy to peel off, and make the eggshells easier to grind, make a fine powder and don't smell.

That is an idea. Great that you figured that out. I am going to do this now and keep the membrane because the membrane itself holds its own benefits to health.

The bubbles under the egg membrane are from the reaction of Calcium carbonate and heat. The heart causes the calcium carbonate to break down into carbon dioxide and calcium this causing the bubble under the membrane :3. BTW the main component of eggs is calcium carbonate.

Lewis isn’t calcium carbonate pretty much pure calcium in its natural form?

  • @zooker7938

    @zooker7938

Not chemically pure calcium, but calcium is quite reactive so finding "pure" calcium in the wild is nigh impossible. A calcium carbonate molecule is one calcium with one carbon and three oxygen atoms.

Speaking as a chicken mom that regularly makes calcium from our eggs I would never use supermarket eggs for this purpose. In the US at least chemicals are fed to the chickens, chemicals are used to wash their eggs and chemicals are sprayed on clean eggs to keep them from going bad before they can be shipped and sold. You will not find anything on labels because they are not required to tell us. Boiling and low temp oven baking will not get rid of all of it. I know it's different in other parts of the world but I know a lot of your viewers are American. I'm so happy you did this video. I think our pets would be much healthier if we incorporated more natural solutions.

Melissa Jones Unlike the US, in the UK it is actually a legal requirement not to clean eggs or spray them with chemicals. Eggs are just cleaned with water and that’s it. I know in the US the opposite is a legal requirement and I’ve always found this interesting :)

Aria YT I know other countries have much better standards and practices than ours but I also know there are a lot of Americans watching this channel. That's why I mentioned it. Personally our family grows our own food and/or buys from others practicing organic/nonGMO farming but we are definitely in the minority.

I just add a few oyster shells to my tank. Figure they'll slowly disolve in the tank water and less effort. Plus snails can chew on if they like. There's a place in a nearby river where the ground is made of small clam & snail shells, I assume built up over centuries.. I figure I could also use those.

I made calcium with eggs about a year ago. I found the egg shells didn't stick as well as the calcium you buy at the store. I used a mortar and pestle as well as a food processor but I couldn't get it into a fine powder, it was more the size of sugar than powder. I just put it in my geckos calcium dish so there would be some use for it.

Is it save to use the egg shell one all the time? I have a poultry farm and I was just wondering

Boiling the egg shells is not necessary is you are going to bake the egg shell in the oven because baking them will kill off anything on them> The egg would work better for a Tegu or Monitor.

Cool video! Just out of Internet, are you supposed to leave the membrane in the egg shells? I would have thought that it wouldn't be great for a reptile?

Yeah the membrane is just the thin white thing that the egg is attached to, but remove the egg white and yolk :)

For the chicken eggs, do they have to be brown shells like demonstrated in this video? Or are white shells okay too?

I have one more question....? Lol but what would happen if I just soaked my eggshells in super hot water for like 10-15 mins and then went to baking them for 5-10 mins? Would it still be okay to give to my snails? Thanks, hope everyone is having a good day or night. 😋

it's this with D3 or without D3 because I don't have UVB for my leopard gecko. But i do put D3 on her crickets and mealworms

NicolasHerps yes, and you actually have to supplement your gecko with both calcium powder and a vitamin mix which should contain D3, and calcium powder is separate since it is good for the gecko's bones

Make sure you keep the calcium and multivitamin separate and I would keep a small bowl of calcium in there at all time except for occasionally putting some multivitamin in but not as often I think she made a video on supplements witch should help if I didn't make much sense
