One of the things I've learned the hard way is that studio size has a big impact on how well your videos look. Wide angle lenses are very tricky, and camera placement is very important, and in a cramped room, adding lights and getting a good camera angle is challenging.

Hmm..I prefer the "before" shots! Particularly that last one. I can see you more clearly, I find the darkness of the "after" version stressful to look at. Some helpful technical info, but mostly I learnt that how you've been doing it all along is fine. I wouldn't worry about it. I love what you do, thank u so much =) Whether it's "here's a cool lick" or "here's some drummers I love and why" or "me talking about something I've been thinking about" or "jamming or talking with a great musician", all really great stuff.

As a videographer who got into it because of drum covers from the likes of Cobus and FreeDrumLessons (before it was Drumeo), the common trap is to think that ISO is another light setting - when in reality, its like adjusting the gain knob on a sound board - if you have a weak signal to begin with (in this case not enough light hitting the camera sensor), cranking the gain knob will only introduce a bunch of noise. On all cameras, the best settings are designed for a certain ISO called the "base ISO".

Dude, nice topic to cover. I'm digging your channel. I'm relatively new to it. Something weird caught my attention. When you bring the aperture to the lowest number, the image should have definitely gotten brighter...even blown out with a lot of white light....an over exposed image. Then you start tweaking the ISO settings. One thing I've learned really matters is the white balance setting. Either set it manually or use a cheap $10 gray card to get more accurate colors. It'll make your editing a ton easier. (Learning to make great looking video like Brandon's is a rabbit hole. I'm overwhelmed. ha ha)

I think there are two factors - first, the light in the room is low without the key light, and the camera was compensating with iso in auto mode. Second, the lowest the f stop of that lens goes is 4.

I like a camera angle that captures the sticking, voicing etc. If it’s obvious, straight shot is probably best, but I appreciate a side shot if it’s hard to tell what is being played between floor tom and bass drum, for example, or wait, how many ghosted snare doubles is that? I’m here for the lesson first, not the lighting, even though I do appreciate higher production quality. Looks good Nate and great topic and quick start guide!

Nate, as an official Old Guy I appreciate the quest for good production quality, but I grew up in the day of a teacher standing at a blackboard so I am focused on what you are saying. Guilty as charged however....the world has moved on from mid 1970s lecture methodology so I am definitely the wrong person to give an opinion 😂

But lowering the f-stop makes it brighter, not darker, no? Opening the aperture decreasing the depth of field but letting more light in.

Correct. But in a dark room with a general purpose lens I still needed iso 800 and a lot of wattage on the key light even at the lowest aperture.

Baby steps. First off, I like it a little brooding and moody. But I also need a lens with a bigger aperture, which will also maintain shallow depth of field and allow me to crank my key light higher

@@8020drummer To what extent is the brightness controlled by the power of the key light? Is it worth spending lots for a super bright light before you start trying to compensate with camera settings?
