    This is really just a placeholder comment till I can sit down and think a bit. I have to say that previously any vid featuring a product costing more than a better detail airbrush I dropped immediately as a finely honed safety reflex (fomo panic prevention). As usual found I still enjoyed watching this and thinking about the kit, tho I won'tbe broaching it with the wife as a stocking filler. A santa sock full of coal makes a weighty counter narrative. Once again this was intelligent comprehensive review and guide delivered like an amiable chat over a mug of tea. I want an Aston Martin built borg cube and a tree house, and a tree. For now I'll leave it at that. (Oscar goes to your wife for best supporting actress in a husband's hobby induced foetal self-cocooning, very, very convincing!)

    In all fairness to yourself regarding the lack of fantasy builds there are already a wealth of easily accessible terrain resources for fantasy games at every skill level and financial budget. However the hard edges and angular nature of scifi and contemporary architectural design lends it's self to demonstrating the power of laser cutting and digital design far more easily.

    Thank you. This is a really great review. I've had an A4 HPC laser for over ten years and loved making all kinds of stuff with it. But it's a bit old and tired now, and the idea of replacing the CO2 tube, now it's cutting depth has reduced to just a few mm has me thinking maybe it's time to get a bit more up-to-date. I'd never heard of this laser cutter, but your review video looks really exciting. Do you have details on cutting depths, speeds, kerf etc? (e.g. my 40W CO2 HPC when new could cut 10mm acrylic at about 5mm/sec in a single pass, would regularly cut 3mm acrylic and mdf in a single pass at about 18-20mm/sec with a minimal kerf to the edge - could this 20W machine cut 3mm acrylic/mdf at a reasonable speed? or would I need to consider the 40W option?)

  • @thestateofplay2023

    @thestateofplay2023

    6 ай бұрын

    From what I understand (haven’t tried yet) this will cut 10mm in a single pass. The 40w version of this cuts even thicker. I’m currently cutting 3mm MDF in a single pass with the 20w. I’m using 100 power but I reckon I could drop to 80.

    I actually upgraded my laser engraver from an open frame 10w to this laser in the 40 watt version. I would be curious to see if the 40w can cut, engrave faster due the increased power. It also may make difference in parts fitting? since the 40watt dot is slightly larger.

  • @thestateofplay2023

    @thestateofplay2023

    6 ай бұрын

    Yes. However the speed is dictated by the frame and rail rather than the power. The 40w will cut much thicker materials in one pass. It will probably cut thinner material much faster in the settings but I’m curious myself if the larger dot size means it changes the part fitting. I can’t see it really as the difference is tiny.

    The thing is, cool as a laser cutter is, unless you're actually going to turn it into a small business you're never going to make back its cost in savings in the way that you would with a 3D printer. I look at the £1500 pricetag here and think "I could buy 50 kits from TTCombat for that." It just doesn't make sense as a gamer-hobbyist, unless you want the maker-hobbyist aspect to take over.

  • @thestateofplay2023

    @thestateofplay2023

    6 ай бұрын

    You’re absolutely right. The way I look at though is I can make kits that I want, to my exact specs. Often T Combats kits only do 80% of what I want. I can also make gifts (wife wants Christmas coasters). There always the time thing too. A 3 D printer takes hours, even days. And a really good one like a Bambu Lab is the same price as this. And even then needs fixing for clogs, cleanup etc. The make hobbyist thing taking over is a very good point though. That’s how I feel about 3D printing. 🤣
