It's obviously not very practical, but I don't think that's the point. He was doing it just to see if he could do it and to show that if you had to it could be done. Plus he was probably also just doing it for the fun of it and that's really all that matters. I thought it was a pretty neato idea!

Grab some tool steel (another broken drill) and tig weld some to the end of you newly twisted drill bit, then sharpen that, it will last much longer. Good idea.

Very creative, but to be honest, for the time consume it's better to buy a drill bit and get the job done quicker, Thanks for the show anyway.

I've heard swishing the product around that you're quenching in the oil improves the cooling. of the piece
@innovationtime20

You heard right my friend But the cooling rate is important, which is a parameter of heat treatment and causes the formation of hard phases in the metal
@zfolwick

the burned bearings had me rolling.
It takes a lot to impress me. I’m impressed with your process of last resort. Indeed, you can probably purchase an index up to 1/2” cheaper than you could make them. If you count the gas it takes to get you to the hardware store and back it might be cheaper to make just one bit. However, if you need an odd size to use with a reamer or maybe a left-hand twist this would do it. Use our old Grade 8 or socket head cap screws for blanks. Note that a mass-produced bit has a minuscule back taper. In thin material this doesn’t matter which is what you’re probably going to be dealing with. In deep holes it’ll probably be a problem as the additional friction will heat things up. And, yes, it’s bad bongos to weld on a bearing but considering the low speed, load, and limited use it’ll work fine, obviously.

Wood and aluminum ok but steel no no no my dear friend ❤♥
Watching this video gave me an idea. You could make a rifling button this way. Then cut rifling in a homemade barrel blank. .22 caliber comes to mind. The only thing I don't like about this video is that the bearings were welded to the piece of metal. This will NOT work for long. In fact I'm surprised it worked at all. Bearing races are a very hard metal and if you heat it up in any way it will snap and break. The bearings should have been in a machined bushing and then the bushing welded on to the plate.
@innovationtime20
Жыл бұрын
Hello my friend You are absolutely right about the bearings Sometimes the lack of facilities forces man to do such things, I should have a lathe machine that I don't have yet. But about the idea you said I think it is not possible to twist the tube to create rifling in this way because the behavior of the tube when twisting is completely different.😉 🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹
i can see where this would be good for making reverse twist bits, but i can find plenty of other bits to fill my needs without this much effort needed.

Very cool! I must admit I didn't know where you were going with the fixture until you actually used it. As for the drill you twisted the wrong direction, it is still useful, especially for drilling out snapped off bolts as often a reverse-twist drill will spin the broken bolt out before it finishes drilling through.
