Dude high five for the Dream cymbal! I love em. I've got a 22" Bliss Paper Thin crash and a 22" Contact ride and i friggin love them. Dream cymbals just show the world that you don't need to take out a bank loan to buy amazing sounding cymbals.

I totally agree with you. The only downside I've seen with Dream stuff is that they wildly vary in tone and quality from cymbal to cymbal. So, you really have to play them in person to ensure you get something that sounds like you. But when you find the right cymbal, it's like magic!
I’m amazed (and somewhat saddened) whenever I get my hands on used drums from late 90s through maybe 2010. It seems like that was peak in quality build on “entry” or “student” line drums. Decent shells, quality components, and consistency all at a really great price point. With the newer drums it’s very easy to see where companies cut corners to save a few bucks whether it’s bass claws, other hardware components, shell construction, and finishing. Always love setting people up with used kits like this.

The one exception to that today is Gretsch. Their import stuff is so good. While the early Catalina kits had some issues with lugs busting, wrap yellowing, and poor shell quality, the ones they produce today are a far cry from that. They're legit mid-tier drums. And you can honestly get away with using them as a "forever kit." They're that good imo.

Thanks George! Yeah, they're cool drums. I had an orange lacquer Mars kit back in the day that I loved. And I had a higher end Saturn kit too. From the top on down, the Mapex stuff is solid!
Look at this dude killing it out here! Love this video and series. Would be interesting to have maybe a before and after you put better heads on a drum from what may have been put on it many years. Cant wait til the next video brother!

I have a late 80s Pearl World Series (13, 16 and 22 modified to virgin) with lacquer finish..Nice and boomy 👌.. Been using hydraulics and e-mad on the bd, which are great, so I don't have to think about the tuning so much... HD Genera Dry on the snare, for the same reason.. 😅 And thanks for the quality content 💪 😄.

It always makes me go ROTFL when I see this or that Drum Company coming out with a new exotic wood and pumping on ads magnifying its magical characteristics, when in fact bearing edges and heads (and how you tune them) make up a good 80% as for tonal characteristics of the drum itself and hardware attached to it it's another 10% to say the least... And to think the best sounding drums ever in my book (3ply pre-76 Ludwigs and Slingerlands) are 50% made of very humble poplar (the core ply)!

Yes to all of this! My fav shells are the clear maple interior Ludwig’s of the early 70s. Such amazing drums!

Not saying you are wrong, but I have a set of Craviotto Diamond series in a vintage white marine pearl wrap and they SING! More than any drums I've ever played. The other set I have is a 1990s 4 ply Ludwig Superclassics with a stain and lacquer finish. They are wonderful but, those Craviottos sing so wonderfully.

And as far a cymbal alloy, I do prefer B20, but there is some horrible B20 cymbals out there. Also. much of Paiste is B8. I think it is mostly about craftsmanship. Personal opinion of course.
@timbofromkeno

@@brent3760 Great drums are built to sing. I think some folks just can’t afford the high end American stuff. But it’s a great feeling to have those kinds of instruments in the arsenal! And on cymbals, I agree on all points. There are some older Paiste B8 cymbals that you’d think would be way too gong-y, but they’re great. Jake from Revival Drum Shop got me into those things years ago. Super rad.

This was great and got me itching to go fix up this old kit I have. A buddy gave me a "CB-700" years and years ago that has just been sitting in the garage. It's in this killer blue sparkel finish but missing some hardware. I always planned to give it the TLC it needed to get it back in to playing shape, just never got around to it.
@timbofromkeno

I hope you wind up fixing those drums up because I’ve always had a soft spot for CB-700. They were an import company that came up with one really good idea-the free floater snare. And then Pearl bought the CB name and the patents along with that. The rest is history. If you ever have questions while you’re wrenching on that kit, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Great video. Gets to the point. Practical advice . Thanks for sharing. For an economy class drum set, do you have any opinions about the Yamaha Stage Custom Bebop Birch?
@destination_percussion
Жыл бұрын
Those are great kits with lacquer finishes and birch shells. Also, the smaller bop sizes are really great for not destroying your back when moving the drums from gig to gig. Throw a mic on the 18" kick and it's super deceiving for being a 20" or 22" drum depeninding on the tuning and heads.
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with Destination Percussion. Wonderful drums! If it were me, I tend to use a 20” bass drum more often, so I’d probably opt for a 20-12-14 setup. But in any case, those drums will sing if you upgrade the heads!
Great video, thanks Tim! I may have a unique challenge for you. I have a 2008 Tama Superstar Hyperdrive, made from birch with one inner ply of basswood on each drum. These are very shallow drums. The 10” tom is only 6.5” deep. I would like to get a deep, big sound from the toms in particular. I’m not sure it’s possible given the shallow depth! In terms of heads, all the toms have clear Remo Emperors as batters and clear Remo Ambassadors as resos. Any tips on getting a deep, thunderous sound from shallow drums?
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
That’s a really, really tough one. Those toms are so punchy due to the shallow depths that it’s going to be difficult to pull low end out of them. You could try Evans Onyx on top and bottom, but that’s only going to go so far. The other thing you could try is doing rounder edges, but I’m not sure if that bring more than 15% more low end, but it’d cut back on the attack more than anything, which may give the illusion of the tone you’re looking for.

@@millennialanimal A new kit could be cool. I think Natal makes some of the best bang-for-the-buck drums out there, and they're based in the UK. Could be worth connecting with them. I'd also stop by a shop and just start hitting stuff until you find something you fall in love with too! And if you do decide to go used, there are so many great Premier kits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s that you can pick up for a couple hundred bucks over your way. If I lived in the UK, I'd have a basement full of them. Might be worth looking on Facebook Marketplace, Facebook groups (for Premier Drums), and on other secondhand classified ads sites online for that sort of thing. And you can outfit any kit - new or used - with brand new modern hardware. And I totally recommend that. That's basically what I do!
