    You said to make them happy, use their name, make a mental note to of the different types of people, look for opportunities to make them happy, Take the time to read their name and use their name, head games but it's different when you do it. Lol ....omg this guy's so full of himself. Clean your fish tank, I feel bad for your fish.

    This was an awesome video. I am a server and have been so for over a year. My restaurant is located in what would be considered a "question" area, smack dab in the middle of a poor community and a more affluent one. I get everyone, from the ones who will tip you no more than five dollars, no matter how great their service was, and those who come back and will ONLY dine in if I am there and tip relatively well. I am always looking for ways to improve and I felt your video did just that. Asking yourself "how can i make their experience better?" will make you a top tip maker, no matter where you go. I do it always in some arenas, because i truly do want to take care of my guests, but this helped me realize how much room for improvement I have. THANKS!!!

    I am 22 and am a server at Applebee's as my side job bc I love working. I have worked there for about 5 months and am pretty decent at it and I am a lot better than I thought I would be. The part where you said to write "thank you mr or mrs ____" stood out to me and am thinking maybe doing that to promote more happiness although I usually get friendly or mellow customers. I always ask if they need anything else when taking their order or bringing them their beverages and food and I offer to take empty plates if I see any.

    That's great, good job. At a casual restaurant I'd be more careful writing Mr. or Mrs. on the receipt, you could simply write a big thank you with a smiley face to keep it light and friendly without calling attention to formality or age. Keep going buddy

    Thanks, I’ve just become a waiter at ruby Tuesdays in Ohio. Just moving here from Los Angeles, the pace is definitely different. I’ve never been a server before but I’m definitely getting the hang of it. I’ve gotten notes on my receipts says “great service! But the bathroom sinks.” Now I bleach the bowls and drains before my shifts, I know this video is 6 years old or so. I’d just like for you to know your information is still valued and appreciated. Thank you!

    True. I thought about it a bit, and I kind of forgot about some previous experiences I've had as a guest. Quite often, my servers didn't do the little things, like the ones mentioned in your video, to boost their tips. As a fellow server (bartender, at least), I still tipped well, but the typical guest wouldn't. 95% of the time, average service produces average tips.

    In addition to what you say, I spent years learning how to entertain my customers by integrating magic and humor into the service. For example, if they order a cup of water I make it appear out of an empty paper bag, or produce a ketchup bottle out of nowhere, make their bill levitate, etc. I only do a few quick, but strong magic tricks with some humor, then I move on to serving the next customer. There is so much magic a server in the restaurant context, all related to the job itself. Since I started doing this it consistently increased my tips by 25 to 30%, and now I have a regular clientele who comes looking for the "magician."

    One of the things I do to help me get a better tip is, at the end of the service after I have rung through the bill, just before giving them the receipt, I will say did you enjoy your meal and was the service great?! I say this is confidence and a little excitement and they will say Yes and then I hand them the receipt and the pen to fill in the tip, I don't say anything else, I want the last thing they hear prior to filling in my tip to be their approval of the dinner. I have noticed I generally get 10 to 15% more on my tips when this is done correctly. Hope this helps, I average 20 to 25 dollars an hour in tip revenue. When they get up, I walk over, tell them how great they were and I look forward to seeing them next time. If they tip big I hand them a business card I had made that says the name of the rest I work at and that I am a server and it has my hours on it, so they know who to ask for next time. It truly is a science, and everything matters. "The solution is to take control of your own tipping destiny.

    I don't agree with that strategy. Personally if I were the guest I would not return. I know when people are using psychological tricks and trying to put me on the spot to cough up some type of expected positive response. You are essentially demanding someone answer you in the positive knowing that people are unwilling to seek out confrontation, especially with a stranger in a low conflict setting like eating out, i.e. paying to have someone make your dinner which you could have just done yourself but you just wanted to relax. I do not think you should be manipulating people like this, and it's tacky but worse it goes against the entire point of hospitality is that YOU are there for THEM, not the other way around. Get over yourself and stop trying to shake down guests for money. Just simply do a great job, and the money will follow. DON'T treat the customer like they owe you anything. THAT is the science, not being a con man.

    @@TrueGritProductions the in-between service sets the stage for the big finally. We provide exceptional service every glass full. Every napkin replaced when it is dirty. Every little thing matters including why we do it. We are not there for free. I thought your video offered good basic information. I have been in sales for 30 years, sales are sales. You found what works for you, and that's great. It isn't going to work for everyone, everyone finds their own style and their own nitch. Keep an open mind and you will make more money. Best of luck to you. Good luck with selling your products! I mean that it's difficult to sell sales tapes, video's and whatnots but it is worthwhile for good basic information like this video. I am sure there are lots of new servers that will benefit from this information.

    As someone who also works for tips (delivery driver) I must also advise anyone who works a service job that they have to understand that some people just won't tip, no matter how good or bad the service was. Some people are either just stingy or even cynical towards the idea of tipping. Regardless, its always best to remain professional no matter the job or environment and maintain consistency with your service towards your customers. Do not be entitled to getting tipped because that's a good way to guarantee you won't get any.

    Actually I've done that and people get annoyed by so many questions. I work in Mexican restaurant and we have to ask costumers how they want their margarita "frozen or on the rocks" "salt or no salt" "12 oz or 20 oz". had a costumer said "that's way too many questions I just came to eat and have a drink how hard is that to do" I think that would be too annoying depending on the person.

    Question/Opinion: I feel like sometimes when you write thank you on the receipt and drop it off you don't really know their names because they didn't give you any type of payment yet. So they may assume that your tip was already included. so they say o she said thank you before we even paid maybe its included. Its the whole credit card/ cash thing. So should you just always write a thank you come again note on the receipts right when you drop it off or after you receive payment and just hope they leave you a tip (you just never know sometimes)

  • @TrueGritProductions

    @TrueGritProductions

    8 жыл бұрын

    +KinkyKenzie29 Always write their name with a thank you on the merchant copy of the bill when they use credit card. Don't write thank you before because it's redundant. If your customers are the kind that look to not tip their server, then you need to find a better restaurant to serve at, which should be your goal as long as you are waiting tables. Otherwise you will become a victim to certain demographics. For instance, I noticed that Hispanic men, especially the ones that were not born in the US, might tip you 8% if you're lucky. You will encounter shithead demographic groups. If you encounter this regularly, it's time to promote yourself to a prime steakhouse where people will usually always tip at least 15% because they understand American traditions and basic human decency. It's a jungle out there in the restaurant world, there's not always a trick you can pull on the sheistiest and least generous of guests.

    When I eat out, I tip on a tier system. (when the bill is $30 or less) I pay in cash whenever possible. $0-5 for poor service. Server is very slow at at time when there aren't a lot of customers. Drinks are never refilled. Short, snappish tone when taking orders. Complaining about the goings-on of the restaurant. etc. $7-12 for average service. Nothing special. Server is somewhat attentive, but largely absent when restaurant is busy. Drinks are refilled off-and-on. Polite, but concise. $15-20 for excellent service. Server is bright and polite. Smile on his/her face and a calming/charming tone. Drinks are refilled regularly. Non-intrusive but very attentive. Visibly working hard to meet my needs and keep me up to date on my order. I don't include meal quality as the service staff have little to no control over that (beyond cold food for everyone at the table). A friend of a coworker has his own personal modifier for tipping that I think is pretty fair as it only pertains to the server and not the kitchen. Start with $5 for every 2 people present at the table. For every $5, a dollar is added to the modifier. Everytime a drink is refilled before it hits the bottom, add a dollar (two dollars if base money is $10, three dollars if base money is $15, etc). If a drink is completely emptied, remove a dollar.

    Or! You could just tip 10 - 20% depending on how bad/good it is, and the math is easily done by moving a decimal place over, and that's 10%, so double it if it's good or don't if it's bad :)

    Or! I can give harder working servers the money they deserve (or more) and stiff the ones who have poor attitudes. I've worked as a server and I've been served at numerous restaurants. I don't consider myself to be one of "those customers" but if a service is terrible and the fault lies squarely on the server, then the consequence (for me at least) is less money. There's only ever been one occasion where I didn't tip at all and that was a particularly nasty evening from start to finish. If the poor server quits that frees up a space for a potentially better one. *Competition drives success.* I'm sorry if you may disagree that I think bad servers aren't entitled to still recieve their 10% due. The service industry is mainly profitable for those who have the patience, charm and self control for it. $7 for average service on a ticket that's $30 or less is 24%+. For times I spend more than $30, yeah, I use the percentage method as that usually ends up being the cheaper option. My method is pretty wordy and can be complicated, but it suits me and it's rare that a server who helps me is left without his/her fair due or more. Your video is informative and very helpful for those who have just started or are thinking of getting into the service industry. It was not my intention to be too snarky at the beginning of this reply.

    I wish everybody tipped like this. It's weird, but there are days that I will go into a decent shift and work my butt off. I'll have the drinks refilled as often as possible chips and salsa filled, I work at a Mexican restaurant, and make sure they're well taken care of. And the entire time the customers seem so happy and pleased with the service, but still leave a meh kind of tip when it comes to the bill. When I first started serving, it was great. Money was great, I had great customers and very simple orders. These days however people seem to not care that some people work harder than others and give no reward for the extra work and effort that was given. It leaves you wondering why you tried so hard for a tip that you would have still gotten with almost half of the same effort. Please tell me if I'm the only one that feels that this is where the service industry is headed

    Where I work we only share 1.5% of total sales with the runners, so for like 5 hours I make 98 in cash usually and give like 8 dollars to the runners. We don't tip share we are old fashion, also 98 dollars for 5 hours isn't the best (other servers make more) but I'm only 16 and have another job because this is only on fridays.

    I always give the best and friendliest service I possibly can to all of my customers. BUT, I have the feeling that the key to making money as a server is in selling more food, not giving "better service". I have the impression that your average person tips 15%, no matter how the service is. What's your opinion on this?

  • @TrueGritProductions

    @TrueGritProductions

    Gabriel Kyne absolutely incorrect... thus the point of me making this video... people give more money to those they trust and like, and who impress them positively... Most people where I used to work in Santa Monica CA tipped 18% standard, and often 20%

    TrueGritProductions awesome good to know. It's odd because I think I'm giving the same level of service each time, but some nights my average tips are 18%, and some nights my average tips are only 14%. But i work at a neighborhood Thai place where most entrees are only 10.95 and I serve a lot of college students / split checks. Liked the video and I will start implementing these tips tonight. Thanks!

    I hate the whole tipping system and want it abolished but at least your video is about what the server can do for the customer and not the other way around. Let me elaborate on one of your points about knowing your customer. A server should ONLY be chit-chatty with a customer if the customer seems chit chatty with them. Most people, especially couples, want to dine it peace. They don't want to know what your name is. I also want to add onto the point of addressing them by their name. Unless your customer is extremely casual with you, you always address them as Ms/Mrs or Mr so and so. I am in my 30s and I take offense to any server (I don't care hold old they are) addressing me by my first name. Etiquette dictates you don't use someone's first name until invited to do so.

I bet customers sense your false friendliness and attitude. Judgment day is only around the bend. Too bad for you. I won't give you the satisfaction of a rude reply like yours was, so I'll pray for you and your negative self. If you expected unsavory behavior and words as a reply back to you, too bad.
