Majora’s Mask is a depressing story…

Ойындар

Majora’s Mask will be remembered as the Zelda game carrying darker and maturer themes within the series. This is not solely because of the plot itself but the themes explored within the beautiful, contained stories of the inhabitants of Termina. This is a short Majora's Mask retrospective, briefly covering the story, development and gameplay. Join me in the last Mentoktober video for this year as we dive deeper into the depressing but hopeful story of Majora’s Mask.

It’s really hard for me to play ocarina and majora’s mask because I play them on my older brothers Nintendo 64 and every time I login I can see his name file with everything maxed out. I feel that this is brushed aside a lot but the Hero of Time Link seems to be the most depressing out of all the Links. Despite his heroic actions in Hyrule and Termina, barely anyone took notice which made him a forgotten hero somewhat. And the fact the Hero's Spirit in Twilight Princess laments on not being remembered as a hero truly makes this Link one of the most tragic.

Pretty human flaw too, the greedy history of the land cost him his parents and in return he's forced to fight for it but receives no acknowledgement of it because none of it happened in the end. He takes the role of a healer and guardian in MM but who was there to heal him?

I truly understand that every theory about MM is important to make the game a bit more of an artistic expression than a full children's game. "You have a lot of friends, how many of these friends consider you a friend?" made me cry when I read it for the first time. But hey, important facts: 1 - japanese culture is very specific when it comes to dealing with death, relationships, being thankful, etc. They've also normally find amusement in very depressive subjects. 2 - the time constraints explain a lot of "holes" in the story. Happy Mask Salesman was a dropped idea on OoT that was used to its fullest on MM. I can see that many of these ideas come from not having enough time to create/design new characters or others. Zora's and Deku's are very underused on OoT and it seems it was planned for them to have extra storylines. 3 - Fierce Deity Mask is both: OP design for character (everyone who worked with Game Designers knows they'll often make some Super character based on MC), the name also gives it away. 4 - Not everyone says that, but the last dungeon was made to resemble Majora's incarnation (when's flipped, i think).

One detail about using the song of storms to make the river in Ikana flow. If you play the composer brother there the song of healing first he says that he feels at peace, but his soul is far too deep into the darkness for the song to work completly. Only the song of storms can truly get rid of his curse. Also, the bubble enemies (the flaming floating skulls) if they touch Link they inflict a curse that stops Link from swinging his sword, playing the song of storms removes that since when you get the song the description says that the song of storms can remove curses.

So I am born in 2008 in a country where Nintendo consoles and stuffs aren't popular So I had to download different emulators on my phone to play the old classic games I remember seeing legend of zelda in a KZread video and deciding to download it I downloaded the ocarina of time A game that hit me so hard that I still tear up when I remember the ending When I completed the ending, I cried so hard, this was the same type of ending as prince of persia sands of time but it just hit different And as days passed on, I forgot about the game 1 or 2 years later I hear the ocarina tune on some random Instagram reel I was shocked, I didn't understand what was happening but the tune was depressing me, it was like as if I found a lost piece of my soul I opened the comments and saw the legendary words 'Legend of Zelda' and immediately remebered the game I started to tear up and cry, as I remembered everything. One of the best games I have ever played

One thing that I always liked is that the game seems to be hinting at the 5 stages of grief with the different areas you explore. The whole game seems to be set up as the passage of grief from link because of the loss of Navi. I’ve also seen theories say that link died in the forest while looking for Navi and Majora’s Mask is him coming to terms with his fate, as he appears later in twilight princess in a similar fashion to the enemies you fight in ocarina in the woods. Not sure how much I buy that theory as canon but it’s really fun to think about!

But the dream had to end and if you do it without dying, Marin, the dream incarnation of Malon and the inspiration for her for the designers for her in Ocarina of Time, will suddenly appear with wings so she can fly as she always wanted. I am entirely able to believe that Termina was created by the mask and it is incredibly sad to consider that once again all those we became attached to are about to vanish.

I totally agree. Haven't covered The Wind Waker on the channel yet but I believe Nintendo was originally planning to follow up OoT and MM storywise and then shifted completely. I feel like one final piece of this story would do well, even today.

I am personally not a fan of the idea pf termina being a different world, i think the idea of it being a different country connected through the lost wood is much more interesting. It expands on the lore of the world outside of hyrule it shows how people from outside hyrule can get here, i like how it expands on the raltionship between our skull kid friend from Oot (which if hes from termina and termina isnt real doesnt make sense) and the architecture and symbolism in the game shows some real hate towards the tri force and godesses and just imagining the story behing what thay could mean is very interesting if Termina is a country that just has existed and will keep existing. Besides if termina isn't a real country then explain how darmani has a statue in botw.

They could’ve made a much better sequel to Ocarina in my opinion. It just simply isn’t as good. The 3 day cycles is annoying and it’s just incoherent like a Nyquil dream. I know some people love it but it’s only of the weaker Zelda games for me.

My personal opinion on termina is that it is not a real place, but a place that the young child created in his mind after getting bucked off of epona for an unknown reason. I think that he fell into a deep and wakefull sleep, brought upon by the horrors and stress that was brought upon by ocarina of time, and in majora's mask he, just like the other characters in the side story, finds peace within himself through the story.

I'll always love how to this day, KZreadrs will continue to misunderstand and mischaracterize the story and point of Majoras mask. That said I suppose calling it depressing isn't the worst offense considering it's themes of panic and how people deal with impending doom as well as mourning.

One thing that makes the tragedy of Termina that much more depressing is that you never 'buy Termina more time' with the Song of Time. You only buy Tatl, yourself, and possibly the Mask Salesman more time. You doom Termina to be annihilated and travel to a branching timeline instead, so even if you beat the game in only 6 cycles, that's 6 worlds you've doomed to the apocalypse. It makes squeezing every little bit of progress out of every cycle that much more important to me.

Easy. An ancient supernatural evil force/entity/spirit. Reference Zulu cultural beliefs regarding spirits and masks. Ps one of the things that makes MM so masterful is that it’s real. If you don’t believe in supernatural evil in this world just turn on the news. (Real news).

Just letting you know so in the future when you try to correct someone that you get it correct yourself😊
