Major set back renovating our $60,000 house (we're struggling)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The journey continues as we remodel our 60,000 house. We can't believe this happened in our kitchen. A major set back!

You guys should put a large scale piece of art above the couch. I've seen people do it for 20-30$, using a beautiful cloth shower curtain, then building a wooden "frame" and stapling it. I think it could make a lovely statement piece!

Home ownership is an adventure. The day I got home from the hospital after having our daughter, our hot water tank blew. After 3 days at the hospital all I wanted was a shower, LOL, but it was two days before we had a new one installed and running. So we had a brand new baby and were heating up water in big soup cauldrons on the stove like pioneers!

I was sad at first when you began demo from the old look because I loved the retro feel, and the old was so well taken care of, BUT what you’ve done with the space is incredible! Y’all have an eye for remodeling and redesigning! I love watching your progress!

We have a 1970's home and with doing any kind of update (big or small) we've run into snags and quirks in the process. Nothing beat the A/C breaking the last week of 100* degree temps our first summer here though. Boy was that a blow to life but we handled it. But when it's all taken care of or an update is finalized it makes you really appreciate things more. So sorry you had to deal with this, but I'm happy you have it in the works to getting it repaired.

Thanks for sharing your experience. A couple years ago we bought a newer house that was only 1 year old. A few months later we found water in our basement and it devastated us. We bought a newer house because we thought we’d have less issues than our former older house 😂. Fortunately the foundation had a 10 year warranty and the builders covered all the cost of repairs. Getting the repairs completed took awhile…Home ownership is always a risk but overall we love our new house and we moved right before the housing boom so we’re very fortunate. I hope your issues are now resolved for good. Your family is truly an inspiration!

Your kitchen is beautiful. Love the cabinet color and the cabinet pulls. You both did a great job. Seems like flooding is just part of home ownership. Both homes I have owned flooded at one point. Can't wait to see the bathroom update. I love that you try and keep what is already there and not just knocking stuff down and adding more to the landfills.

Our first home we lived in only a year and a half. All of the mechanics were in the garage. That winter my husband left the garage door open, and our pipes froze. We then started to thaw them out…incorrectly. Ended up with a busted pipe and water spraying into our garage onto the vehicles. It was like a fire hydrant spraying. Thankfully we knew where our water shut off valve was…right under the busted pipe. 😂 That was an expensive emergency call bill. 🤦‍♀️ Our second, and current home, we had another winter issue. We saved up an emergency fund and then decided to splurge on granite countertops. And wouldn’t ya know that’s when our heat pump died. 🙄 Thankfully we had ceiling heat as a backup source. And we had just enough cash in our EF to pay for a new heat pump. That happened right after the C. So prices jumped quite a bit on us. We kicked ourselves for not replacing it first, before the countertops. We knew it was going to need replaced. We just didn’t expect it to happen immediately after our kitchen remodel. 😂

I would love it if you'd put all your home renovation projects of this house into a playlist so I can share it with my daughter. She and her husband would like to buy a home, but everything available in their price range are fixer-uppers. I really love the style you're bringing into this house, and it's very similar to my daughter's taste. Also, that was really good information on the countertops and the black sink. I will say, however, that we are defrosting our turkey in the kitchen sink right now and I'm super glad we have two basins so we can have the turkey in one and still have the other for normal kitchen usage. Plus, I use two basins for lots of things, so that's my preference. But the black is gorgeous. Love your flooring. Love the black cabinets and black fireplace. Love the vertical subway tile. Love the touches of wood accents in the kitchen. You guys have great style. :)

Nice kitchen! And yes we had major set backs in our old home as well. While redoing the kitchen we had water coming down wall- it was from roof. Had to re do the roof. Another time we were getting ready for my sister-in-law’s wedding and our basement (which was my brother’s apt) flooded when the rain came down hard. We had to seal it from the inside and later we dug up old French drain and saw that it was broken. Had to re do that. Or when my husband was only going to replace top of deck with Trex, but then realized the whole bottom of deck was rotted out and unstable (he lightly pushed and a post fell down). I was just glad that deck didn’t fall while we had a BBQ or something. For this stage in our life we needed some breaks (to focus on health and finances), so that’s partly why we moved to a duplex. Like you guys mentioned, it’s the outside work that really is tough. And it doesn’t seem to end. We would consider in the future but not yet. Glad it was something you guys could figure out and hope the bathroom Reno goes well!

Wow I feel for you! my family went through the same thing with an exploded toilet line spraying water all over our laundry room downstairs a few months ago. We had those same fan things going to dry it out. So glad it wasn't too serious damage. Praying for your family and house to recover, God can bring good from anything 🙏

Definitely a 1 story and lots of tools to repair. A budget will help for bigger repairs. Just finished repairing a broken plumbing pipe that led to 3 more leaks. Invest in "Shark Bites"

I would have contacted a Fire and Water restoration company and have them deal with insurance. If your home was built earlier than the 70s, you guys might have disrupted asbestos and ate all of it. 😮 Hopefully not, but next time..

We literally went through something similar within the first year of homeownership. A pipe was leaking and it went underneath the laminate flooring in the living room 😅 it was awful
