I have to tell you, the 1959/60's ranch houses are my favorite. Must be I've owned 3, they have features that I love, hard wood floors, coat closets, linen closets and build in storage. Draw backs, during that period fuel was cheap so less insulation and not the most efficient windows. My only concern is not to jump into moving your washer/dryer to basement, you're soon find out it's a lot of running up and down stairs to a cold basement. And I'd ask your neighbors about their experience with basements flooding under extreme rain periods before finishing off yours. Does it have a sump pump? Dehumidifiers are usually a good idea too. I admire how you both are managing your life and not listening to those who push for debt. .

Love your new house - what a great find in this day and age! We paid the same price for our house 35 years ago for 1500 sq feet and NO basement - so you really got a steal! I'd take off the door to the upstairs to give a more open and spacious feel to the house when you walk in. I can't wait to watch what you do to it and how it looks when you're done! Congratulations - you two have so much wisdom for your age!

I am so so happy for you all! We bought our house that was built in '71, 3bd 3ba, and we've had very few issues with it. Better construction, stronger materials. It was similar to your story. It had been on the market for a very long time, it didn't show well. Being able to look past some ugly can save you a lot of money! (Your home isn't ugly, just needs some love! Our home was ugly in places 😂) Again, I'm just thrilled for you all! Having more than one bathroom is something to get excited about!

Congratulations! The basement will be a great place for a playroom. The bath tub is cast iron…really nice. And you might think about removing the door to the stairway. It will feel much more open when you open the front door. Can’t wait to see what you guys do with your beautiful home.

Often those doors to the up stairs are like that because the insulation is not as great in older homes and you lose all your heat. All I'm saying is think about wall insulation before taking the door away.

I agree with the idea of moving the door to upstairs. I would also move the stove and put a new stove an oven in one in the kitchen. Another idea is to paint all the doors and trim to make everything more light and open.

I did buy something like that. I’ve had a 1959 ranch for 29 years. Great house,well built. I’ve put more into it than I paid for it: new paver patio, new driveway and sidewalk, hardwood floors where there was carpet before, remodeled bathrooms, bigger patio doors. It’s worth the cost and effort. I hope you are happy in your wonderful new home.

I was sad to see that kitchen ripped out. The cabinetry was original, well made beyond anything built today, looked to be in good condition and went with the original design of the house. I’m a purist about renovations being consistent with the original design of a home. But, you guys are amazing, do great work and I’m sure it’s going to be beautiful! …I just love MC homes and if was in such good condition, I wish y’all could have kept as much of the kitchen as possible! Absolutely I would buy it!!!

Congratulations on your purchase and especially being mortgage FREE! We are now past the age where we would purchase this fix-er-upper house, but we did it when we were young. This is an amazing price in Michigan (i know I live in Michigan as well!! The average price of a home here now is $250.00.) Moving up the property ladder is a lot of work for sure, but this is how we also improved our home assets too. When I was age 21, in 1970 we bought our first two bedroom/two-bathroom home in Michigan for $19,000 (with a full basement unfinished and a double garage non-attached.) We had large rooms and glorious hard oak floors and added a third bedroom and finished off the basement. We sold that home 27 years later for $120,000. Our second home was a 1950's, three-bedroom (all one floor,) two full bath ranch home in the country on five acres with an in the ground pool and a huge pole barn. Bought for $120,000 and twenty years later we sold that property for $230.000. We are now age 76 and 71 and our last home is a 1,258 sq. ft. 1980's luxury condo across from a lake for $357,000. These condos improve in value approx. $1000,000 every 10 years due to the wonderful community and location being located just two miles from Lake Michigan. (We downsized in our senior years on purpose.) When we run out of savings and IRA's (in out late 70's/early 80's) we will sell this condo and move into senior apartments and live on the profits for the rest of our years. We are a second marriage, having both raised and educated two children in our first marriage and do not have the assets that a 40 or 50 year married couple might have, so we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to fund this place. It was years of sacrifice and sweat-equity that earned it.

Make sure you get a sump pump for the basement as they tend to flood.

Love the house guys! That tiny kitchen can actually be HUGE with a little reconfiguring. Move the sink centered under the window (might have to move the window up so the sill is countertop height) along with cabinets along that entire exterior wall. Take out the existing peninsula, wall oven, and cooktop, then install a range (less expensive than a cooktop and wall oven) on the wall where the sink currently is. Move the fridge to the nook where the old wall oven is and remove the upper wall and upper cabinets where the fridge was to open it up to the dining area. Create a bar between the kitchen and ding room. Can’t wait to see what you guys end up doing with this place!

You guys got a super home for $60! Beautiful woodwork! Please leave the washer dryer where it is. You would hate carrying all your laundry up and down two flights of stairs - plus the amount of traveling up and down the stairs to check on your laundry, and the shift from washer to dryer. The units are in a great location- you can cook, be with your family, etc while doing your laundry without the hassle and wasted physical and mental energy of wondering what's going on with your laundry! Houses built in the 50's in Michigan are actually well made homes. That "thing" in the hallway made for sheets and towels and such is called a linen closet.

Your story is very similar to mine. In 2014, my ranch style house was on the market for $90,000. It's 1000 square feet, 1 full bathroom, 3 bedrooms, built in 1955 with attached garage. I also offered $50,000 and we settled on $55,000. I put $40,000 down and paid off the $15,000 balance in 2 years. I've done a bunch of improvements to my house. It is now appraised at $120,000. I'm a single guy with a dog and love my house and debt free way of life. I have no intentions of moving.

Love the house!! Great buy! We bought our 1400 sq ft house on almost an acre about 19 years ago. It was built in 1968 and has great features like built in drawers and cabinets in some of the rooms. YES! This home has lots of potentials. It will look great once you are finished and relandscape the yard too. My home was built in 1929 and I would not change it for the way homes are built today. I redid the bathroom and thankfully the kitchen was done right before I purchased it. The character is lovely as I do not like cookie-cutter neighborhoods.I have hardwood parquet floors, arched doorways, ten-foot ceilings, and an enamel bathtub-which is what you may have too. We bought a 1965 stone ranch in Illinois and after living in a few newer homes my husband had to enlarge all the doorways here and eliminate one of the hallways. It made a huge difference in how the house feels and the light that flows through the rooms. I would move the coat closet , stairway door and wall and make nice staircase that opened into the living room. That would make a nice, open entryway. You bought a nice home, 50's and 60's homes were built well.

You might consider moving the front door to the living room. You might consider removing the wall between the kitchen & dining area. Reconfigure the kitchen to a better arrangement. Take the built in oven out & buy a range stove for the kitchen. Replace the kitchen windows to smaller shape so that you can put the sink under the windows.

To have a paid off home at your age is the best decision you could have made. The only issues appear too be cosmetic which ar not difficult fixes. Some Financial experts recommend paying off your home after eliminating credit card debt. You guys are ahead of the game. Great work and Excellent deal!!!

Congratulations! I am looking for my second home in NY but prices are crazy, starting is $700,000+ and they are gut job, non-livable. Basement is great! Think extra storage, play area for kids when they have friends over, laundry and maybe tv area and office area. In the kitchen, maybe think about getting a stove with an oven but keep the second wall oven too. That will come in handy for holidays. Congratulations again! Can’t wait to see the remodel.

In 1983 we paid $62,222. for an 1100 sq ft split entry home - one bathroom upstairs and one in the basement.So considering the pricesacross the country right now - this was a steal. Very Good.

Love the home! Currently living in a 50’s mid century home myself. If you wanna get crazy you could knock out that wall between the kitchen and the dining room and really open it up. Chances are it’s not load bearing since it’s running parallel with your roof rafters.

Wow, such a nice house and looks like with a good bones; Happy for you guys! one thing I want to mention though; if you guys can find a place for laundry on the first or a second floor, you will not regret it; going to the basement to do laundry, maybe looks like ok now, but trust me 🙄; if it was me, I would literally put it in a guest room in order to avoid a basement laundry 😂🌸🌼🌺

Yes, one of my biggest requirements for our home was main floor laundry area, I got really tired of going downstairs for laundry after a couple years in our first few homes.

agreed. That was a requirement on our first home we bought, we moved and laundry is back in the basement and I hate it. Inventory for houses were slim so we didn't have much of a choice.

Hello. Congratulations on your new home. Idea for your kitchen remodeling. I took my upper cabinets off the wall and moved them up so that they fit right up to the ceiling. Then I was able to add open shelving underneath. It added a lot of extra storage, was very budget friendly and was a style upgrade. You would have to remove the bulkheads. They are old fashioned and a waste of space. My remodel cast $3,000 but that included new fridge and stove. Fresh paint does wonders. Good luck!!

Congratulations! What a lovely old home to settle in.

What a beautiful house! The cabinets in kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms are old and in beautiful condition. Someone had a lot of pride in their home. I'd rearrange the kitchen BUT, I would do it in a way that used the original cabinets because they're so beautiful. That oven in the hallway is in a terrible location. Walking around the rangetop counter to get to the oven not only looks odd, but is and is going to be very inconvenient. A range could go right where the existing stovetop is, sink acroos from it, under the window. You're correct. A wood burning fireplace is very inefficient and will suck warm air out of your house, raising your heating bill. You might put glass doors on it so it can be closed off when not using. On the other hand, if the power goes out, you'll still have at least a little heat. Overall, your new home looks to be in good conditionnand is lovely. You've never had a basement though they're common in most places. Basements come with their own "needs". Check to see if your basement has ever flooded before you move the washer and dryer to the basement. And if it has a good sump pump. If the basement isn't finished, having the washer and dryer there in a grubby, damp place is going to be tough. You'll probably need a dehumidifier in the basement. I'd take the door to the upstairs off and make a cased opening.
