Maintaining Quality Standards in Dentistry | IG Live with Dr. Matt Nejad and Dr. Kyle Stanley

In this IG live talk, Dr. Kyle Stanley and I discuss the importance of quality in our profession and the minimum standards for our profession. Fees vary greatly among practices for the same procedure and there is certainly a difference from one dentist/practice to another. One of the things I hear a lot is that the type of dentistry we do is not practical because it takes too much or it can't be profitable. This simply isn't true. There is a market for all types of dentistry and its important to have options to serve different populations of patients, but the important thing is that the certain quality standards are maintained regardless of the price.
QUALITY
A filling is not the same everywhere you go, and either are crowns, inlays/onlays, etc. The common conception is that quality is the differentiator but this isn't always the case. There are many examples of expensive dentistry which does not meet commonly accepted quality standards. This poses the importance and ethics behind the concept of "what is considered the minimum acceptable quality?" Ethically this is a very important topic and during this talk, we explore this subject in-depth and provide our opinions. No patient wants to have a restoration which is below the standard, no matter what the price is. Ethically, it is expected of us to provide restorations that meet the minimum standards and yet we see sub-standard restorations being placed routinely in a large percentage of practices. We can not let quality standards suffer due to economic and financial constraints.
TOPICS COVERED:
- Standard of care
- The importance of a wide variety of options to meet patient demand across the population.
- Minimum requirements for a restoration to be acceptable
- Strategies to achieve these requirements
- Insurance fee schedules and reduced fee schedules

Wow maybe this was geared toward dentists, but as a patient this was really insightful, thanks. Going through that exact thing with my dentist. He rushed a filling and there's an open margin at the gumline. He says he could try doing it over but he wants to do a crown to fix it, and I don't know that I trust him to do either. Unfortunately there seems to be an incentive to do low quality fillings if they fix it with a crown. Wish dentists could just focus on doing their best instead of worry about margins or insurance.

Hi Taylor- Glad you found it useful. I totally agree about low quality fillings transitioning to crowns in a lot of practice settings unfortunately. I hear ya. All the Best- MN
