Both of my male Maine Coon's died of cardiac problems with my second having to be put down at 2 years old. After 9 years of contemplation I finally decided to try one last time, this time getting a female. We recently brought her home at 12 weeks old. My husband said he was so happy for me I asked why he said because he knew it took me so long to decide and I was so heartbroken for so long after after what happened. So I start my journey once again with high hopes. I love Maine Coons.

We got a male Maine Coon from the shelter. He is black and is the most well behaved cat we have ever had. He is such a gentleman and smart as a whip. He talks to us and will come and get one of us when he wants something like food or a door opened. For a Christmas present he brought a mouse he had caught in the basement. This cat is a serious hunter and regularly gets mice in the house. We used to have a mouse problem... He is absolutely adorable and is a love bug. He is a 16lb cat and can be an armfull but his fur is so soft. He will come and get one of us if he wants to be groomed. Sadly he was returned to the shelter twice but he is not going anywhere now. We just love him so much.

I got a female Maine Coon 12 week old kitten from someone who I thought was a ‘reputable breeder’. Sadly this proved not to be the case. She said that the parents had been checked for HCM. Fortunately my kitten is free from this genetic defect. However, I had never heard of other genetic problems in MC cats. Penny was walking ‘funny’, a sort of swaying movement. After much research, I sent off a DNA sample which revealed that Penny did not have MSA (Muscular Spinal Atrophy), but she is carrying one gene. This means that she should not breed. She is spayed, so that was ok. However, the swaying walk turned into a limp which increased as the days/weeks passed. I took her for hip x -rays. These showed that Penny had a genetic defect called ‘Legges-Calve-Perthes Syndrome’, which meant that the head of the femur had necrotized, & there was only a small piece of bone connecting bone to hip. The cost of repair (a Femoral Hip Ostectomy)) is phenominal - $5-7,000 CA). We were so torn about what to do. Penny is a bright, loving little kitten. We felt that she deserved to have a chance at such a young age, so, in spite of the struggle to meet such an expense, we decided to go ahead with the surgery. It is now 2 weeks since Penny’s surgery, & she seems to be doing well. There is no guarantee that the other leg will not be affected. We can only hope & pray that it will remain healthy. She is now just 10 months old. BUYERS. OF. MAINE. COONS. BEWARE!! Know your breeder, & learn about the genetic defects that this breed can inherit.

He sprayed. ALOT. I did not know how to stop him from spraying so I just cleaned it up every time he did it. Even tho he sprayed everything he was never aggressive towards her. I have a 6 month old female Maine coon. Have had her since she was 3 months old. She is super affectionate, but also likes her own space, which is great. She has just been spayed. I’m totally in love with her. She is very much as female Maine Coons have been described; loving, very affectionate, but also needing their own space from time to time. My other, 7 year old Ragdoll x Bengal (not my choice - the Bengal part) male is ultra needy, quite moody, & a bit of a bully. We had some trouble introducing my little Penny. Taffy didn’t fight with her, but he wouldn’t be near her, & went into a depression, not eating or drinking. He had to be rehydrated twice, & eventually was prescribed an antidepressant which has helped. I also use Feliway Friends, which may have helped too. Now they sometimes play, & the atmosphere is much more relaxed. One of the reasons I got a Maine Coon is for the size. Penny is already almost the same size as Taffy. She is also not submissive etc., but is very friendly & outgoing towards Taffy. I’ve waited for 9 years to get my Maine Coon, & I’m so happy to have her at last.

My male Maine Coon loves cuddling me but rough plays with my blue moggy and it intimidates him so much. Females are more likely to climb super high and males are more likely to be territorial.

My first rescue 90% Maine Coon had HCM. He also developed a problem with the left femur, & the bone.’died’ according to a surgeon at the specialist emergency hospital. He had the leg amputated (on the advice of several vets with whom I was in contact). Unfortunately, being a large size was not in his favour, & he developed severe arthritis. His HCM also increased, & he had to be ‘put to sleep’ when he was only 8 years old. My new MC kitten was, I was told, free from HCM, & indeed this appears to be so. However, when she was about 6 months old, she started limping. After a couple of weeks I asked the vet to do X-rays which showed that she had a necrotized head of the femur in her right leg, known as Legge-Clive-Parthes Disease. She was & is so young, sweet tempered& full of life that I was able to pay for her surgery (FHO) with much help from a foundation & a good friend. She seems to be doing very well, 7 weeks post surgery, but it’s early days … . Undoubtedly, Maine Coons have the sweetest & most lovable natures out of the many cats I have either had myself, or met outside of my home. I hope my Penny continues to thrive as I am totally in love with her! Thanks for your video!

I purchased a male Maine Coon from Russia. He cost me a whopping 4 thousand. He's a black smoke. He's 11 months old and weighs 19 lbs and growing. This is what most people want when they say they want a male, HOWEVER.....he is NOT a lap cat. As a matter of fact, he's a loner. He doesn't like to be touched a lot. You can forget holding him. He'll let you pick him up but once you get seated with him...he's gone. He does like to rub around your legs but when you go to pet him, he dodges, has to smell your hands first and then he'll rub his face into your palms...that's about it. If you try to pet him and he doesn't want you to, he's going to swat or bite. I purchased a maine coon cat tree that was 300 bucks, a 40 dollar water fountain, all kinds of toys and boxes and even a robotic mouse. He could care less about any of that. He sleeps on the full size bed in "his" room and rarely plays with anything. I'm low key a little scared of him and somewhat disappointed.

I own a 7 month male Maine Coon and of course it might depend on the environment he grew up in his first 3 months, but I think he is the most loving cat I've ever known. He never attacks or bites and wants pets and playtime all the time. It might depend on their personality, but mine also loves to be active with us and run around. He is very agile and strong. I wanted a female back then but I'm glad I got a male because my other cat is rather violent on the play fights, so the maine coon counters that energy. I always heard from other cat owners that females are more distant and independent and males are more needy and affectionate. However this Maine coon is rather a dog because he can't be far from us or doing something alone, loves belly rubs and cuddling at night. He is indeed a gentle giant. Oh and he's already bigger than the other male adult I have.

My nephew has a Maine coon called Grace…she is the last of three cats to arrive at his home, and five years old, now retired breeder. She’s fit in so well. Sooki, the elderly cat isn’t a fan but neither hurt each other, and Maggie who’s just turned a year old looks at grace as her mother, and both was each other. Grace is also very gentle and likes attention, however doesn’t sit on laps like the other two ladies…they are all characters

We had Syberian, Ragdol and Norwegian Forest cats, all died prematurely (heart, tumor and pulmonary deasise)... now 3 Maine Coon boys, 1, 3 and 10 years old... it seems to us, they don't have any health problems comparing to other breeds... well, maybe except 10yrs old boy and some dental issues, but I heard from vet its rather common thing among Maine Coon gentleman in this age... generally its rather strong and healthy cat breed...

I have a male and a female Maine Coon. The male is standoffish, quiet and very reserved. He is my registered emotional support animal. We go for walks on a lead and love going to book stores especially for the reception he receives. He tolerates the attention heaved upon him. He is a sweet Giant. My female is a love bucket and attention seeker. She doesn't like being held or anything but seeks attention on her own terms. I would not trade either one of them and both of them are adopted.

I am just waiting to invite a maine coon female kitten into my household in the end of Jan. I have selected a girl, as I do assume the size will be the same as her future fellows (2 large male cats but of a smaller breeds - british shorthair and typical european home cat - both are having almost 6kg without being fat). I think there will be a need of physical balance between them, that the old fellows are not bullied by a newcomer when she grows up. Why do I think so? The oldest female cat (siberian cat) passed away a year ago and she was governing those two by hard paw, letting them behave - she actually helped me to raise those two as a properly behaved creatures, so we will see if the new female would be also kind of more governing type. The previous generation of cats were only females and I saw them also that they are much more "sharp" in the behaviour than current male cats I have.

I accidentally ended up with 2 mainecoons and a half one bc my mom found them as tiny kinda malnourished kittens only a month old, and bought them home, there were no shelters or anywhere they could go so we kept them I didn't know much about cats bc they were my first ones but I took them to the vet and got them healthy again with medications they needed Then they seemed slowly bigger than they should be and looking more maine coon like and so I have 2 (.5) 😂 The "half" is bigger than normal too but not as much and looks like one but short-haired instead 🙋‍♀️ very much same litter tho 💯

The Maine Coon will come and cuddle either one of us when she wants cuddles and often tries to stroke the other cats. It's funny because our elderly rescue cat 17 and the girl Burmese put her in her place despite her being nearly twice as big.

I have a 26lb 6 year old Maine Coon - Jack. he doesn't play with humans unless its a item/feather on a string. he doesn't go for laser pointers or a little rough housing, you will get the claw if you touch them back feet. However, he is very loving, he doesn't even suspect rough housing or harm is coming when you put your hand towards him, he just melts into your hand and rolls all over exposing belly and is a huge love bug. I don't have a female maine coon to compare him with but i have a regular female cat, and the only time its loving is when its hungry. Jack follows me all over the house, waits for me at door when i come home from work, and stays about a foot away literally until i go to work the next day. Best cat I ever had and will get another.

I didn’t choose a Maine coon. It chose me. There’s was this orange Maine coon cat, that looked like a skeleton with fur. But his fur was beautifully taken care of which shocked me. Because I found it eating outta the food I leave for feral cats. Everyone in the neighborhood was trying to get this cat. It took me 3 weeks to gain its trust and bring it inside. It never ran away from me. It just walked away and meowed at me over his shoulder. After 3 weeks he came running to me and I got him inside. I took him to our local animal rescue league in hopes of finding the owners. He’s 3 years old. Weighs slightly over 10 lbs and is a kitty skeleton with fur. You can see his hip bones even through the fur. You can feel every notch on his spine, every rib. He looks unnaturally skinny from above. No chip, not neutered, no matching lost cat flyers, no one claimed him. He either escaped or was dumped. Either way, I got VIP on adoption. He’s home with me and my husband and our two other girl kitties. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he escaped from a very horrible backyard breeder. He looks starved before he was lost. I’m only saying that because of the difference in his coat from the first time I saw him to three weeks after when I caught him. I was feeding him those entire three weeks. It looks like he gained weight since I first saw him and he still looks and feels deathly skinny. I’ve been brushing him the past two days since he’s home. But I’m scared I’m gonna break him he’s so skinny. He is eating, drinking, and using the bathroom.

About the food amount: Sure, the monthly food cost may be negligible. However, over the entire life of the cat it would add up. I am sort of biased though. I don’t have a “Maine Coon” and never have had one. My families first cat was a female and she was MEAN! She wanted nothing to do with anyone. That is why for the longest time I HATED CATS. However we got a male cat and his is SO MUCH COOLER. He is chill and enjoys being around us. He legit acts more like a dog than a cat though. Our female cat passed in 2020 and we ended up with another male cat and he is cool too. Now we have 3 male cats and I LOVE THEM! They are all so cool.

If you get a male, be ready to deal with massive litter box duty. I have a spay who is only part Maine Coon, and she is big enough to have to transport in a dog crate. Neuters can get a lot bigger, and need all of their supplies, including litter boxes, on a larger scale than most other breeds. Of course, if you adopt an adult instead of a kitten, you will be spared the possible shock of having him grow past thirty pounds. 😸

Make sure the breeder is good. Check for obvious things, such as whether the kitten or cat has fleas. No reputable breeder would permit their cats to have fleas. Also, look at the older cats. If they aren't friendly, your little kitten may not grow up to be friendly either.
