@@cameronadair4135 Gospel Music was fairly new to the European public. I recall that it was the 80s when black gospel music came into prominence. Those folk knew how to clap in time because of us pentecostals coming into the country during 50s and 60s. 😂 Seriously Mahalia would have told those brothers and sisters to clap in time.

Raw talent, raw emotion…..truly the greatest gospel singer!!!

By the late 60's she had become as famous as a rock star. Whenever I hear her sing I get the spirit and that's saying something for someone who is not a religious person.

I don't know what she was experiencing when she hit that last note of "Elijah Rock," but I felt ecstasy. That's the gift. When the singer makes you feel it. That's why people loved her. That's why I love her. She made me feel love for God.

I LOVE me some Mahalia Jackson. I love to watch her sing her hair into a mess! Just sing those wigs all down! A true Gospel Evangelist. I was raised on her records and she's just the greatest. I can't wait to meet her in person!

So far my Middle School chorus has sang 3 songs by Mahalia Jackson. But only me and the teacher know because they don't like listening to the good stuff.

she moves me, from when I was a young child, like she moved my mother, my sisters.. she still moves me 50 years later, every time I listen to one of her great performances

The best and in Mahalia`s interpretation unique spiritual to me, makes gooseskin when I hear it, also with the great Mildred Falls on piano in concert, you can hear her handclappin and when she beats with her hand the gran piano (nice vid documents from 61 from Hamburg, Stockholm and Amsterdam). You can see the prophet Elijah acting in the old time , leading Israel.

Alright now Fire!!!!! felt a little dance at the end. What a wonderful women of God. She one of those Old SOLIDER that paved the road.

You cannot find another today that stands so vividly before the people as an emblem of holiness as it relates to stardom and true dedication of her profession . . . as that is, giving total praise to the Lord, and not a mere entertainer. She "was not" a show, as is seem today.

That's why during the song She Sang Jesus help me have mercy because she knew God had to help her get through it she wasn't well but she wanted to give it her all and she asked Jesus to help her give it all

A phenomenon! There are other great American voices, like Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, but Mahalia was unique and so soulful and powerful!
