I agree this should be a thing in the future, but without women tournaments they wouldn't get any representation simply because there arent enough good women players to compete in major tournament. This isnt because of genetics and its simply just numbers, there are significantly more men that play so we should expect that significantly more men are in the top 1% of players, and participate in the biggest tournaments. Women are in fact allowed to participate in these tournaments if they qualify but it usually doesnt happen, or they rather compete in the womens tournaments. Removing womens tournaments would get rid of their representation if we were to do it right now

@@joshii4537 sorry to pop your bubble but in top 100 players alive, none is Woman, the highest MMR player that is a Woman is a chinesee player with impressive rank but nowhere near the bests of the best. I don't think that man do better bc of the genetics but maybe more bc of the biology. Testosterone makes them on average more competetive. I may be wrong on this but I think that contributing it to inequality could have answered the 60's but not modern day. We live in a world (atleast Europe) when women are socially no worse than men and they even get stronger social support to become better than men (if you disagree, imagine someone telling some man to be better than woman and tell me that this vision wasn't odd for you). Maybe there is another answer, that we don't know by focusing on other aswers too much.

He grew up with a sister who also plays chess well. But if he hadn’t I’m sure he would have still replied this beautiful and wise answer. I love him so much more for this

You see it in chess, you see it in gaming, this pretense that boys are encouraged and women aren't. The truth is that men have always been insulted for being obsessed with chess, or gaming, ESPECIALLY by women. It's just that they didn't care. It was always the girls calling the boys nerds, and making gaming a social stigma among adolescence, and now suddenly they're acting the victim, the gal is astonishing. Incidentally, chess is not the only sport where women weren't allowed to compete, or, if they did compete, weren't allowed to win. There was an amazing British Showjumper called Pat Smythe. In the 1950's she came up against such restrictions. In one championship she won, knocking down only one fence in a three day comp., but saw her cup go to the man who came second.

Men do have an advantage at the upper echelons of chess, but even then women do have some advantages over men, such as the fact that they are better at memorization and focused studying, which are both incredibly important to becoming a top chess player. The reality is that there is no biological reason a woman CAN'T be a top chess player. It matters from individual to individual but Magnus' point is that there's no a biological reason why the best chess player in the world COULDN'T one day be a woman. And on that he's 100% right.

He put that shockingly well in so few words. I would personally say it's mostly about numbers, but that is a symptom of environment. Not necessarily saying that’s incorrect, but I’m not seeing much evidence for it. For example: Women have absolutely proven to be as good a shots as men, despite firearms culturally being a manly sport and women not being encouraged culturally to do so, women who work hard can compete on par with male shooters in the Olympics and shooting tournaments. But chess… they just don’t.

@Jk that is true, but doesn't mean men are naturally better at it than women (it is a strategy game, there's no proof women are worse at strategies. Actually, they're usually more cautious, so I don't know how that would affect), just that they like competition more, that's also the reason there's more men playing shooters and games like that. And still, I'm sure a big part of the reason why there's so little women playing chess is the environment. Just read these comments and imagine how you would feel as a woman. You would not feel motivated at all.

BTW, almost all of these "men vs women" differences can be explained simply be assuming that the two distributions of men and women are statistical equal in their average but the men's distribution has more spread. That explains more geniuses as well as more homeless people among the men. I'm not saying this is the complete explanation, just a possible part of it.

Of course he is being careful. You can tell by the way he keeps saying uhh and pauses. He’s talking much slower than usual and keep ending his sentences with a more questioning upward inflection rather than an assertive downward inflection. He’s clearly trying not to say something “politically incorrect” regardless of his personal beliefs. Women's chess is less televised and marketed, prize pools are generally smaller, very good women players are less glamorous than men. Until that's fixed we'll have disparity, which I believe is what Magnus is saying when he refers to the environment.

He's got a big part of why there are so few elite women in chess. I'm not sure he's right about interest though. I think it's something far fewer women are willing to put the time into in the first place. It may also be that men tend to occupy the extremes of intelligence. So the top 1-2% and the bottom 1-2% is heavily male.

Their is certainly some truth to this statement, girls have become GMs as early as 15, anyone who can become a GM at that age is certainly very talented and hardworking, the problem starts from there, once they become a GM, they almost stop playing open tournaments all together. Women chess is certainly a good event to attract more girls to the sport but it's a double edged sword, it also acts as a deterrent once a women player becomes a GM, they choose to play in the women only event because it gives them a better chance of earning more money in the short term, they become complacent. Judit exclusively played open and made it as far as candidates. The only fast way to make women stronger forcefully is to ban women chess after a certain age for example 18-21. After this age all women will be compelled to play at open

He is right, the environment should be more supportive for women. But here's an article from year ago "Among men number 1 female in the world is rated 83rd, second one 216th" Guys there's a difference between striving to support both genders to be strong players and acting like statistics don't exist.

what kind of support do you mean? You are right, they ignore facts to be nice to women, this is very very dangerous and it assumes, that men are in general better, but we just don't talk about it anymore. This is completely wrong.

there are no genetic differences, the only reason there is a difference is due to the environment they are raised in as he said in the video. we are all born with the same exact brain and mentality.

he is just nice and don't want te be blamed by those aggressive feminist creatures nowadays. It is hard to tell the truth if you are that famous. To ignore the fact, that troughout history until now, men are the competitive ones and women the social ones and this obvously leads to different outcomes in competitive sports, is just hilarious. Posting this shows, how obsessed the video poster is with his indoctrination.

i strongly believe that women are under a pressure men will never be, there were a recent drama and many women accused a GM who did some bad things to them, so i think a LOT of woman quit chess because of this enviroment where big chess houses and tournaments concent this behaviour from male GMs

@@Anonymous-wp7lm Men don't have higher IQ, but their self-estimate of their own IQ is higher on average than for women. Quite plausibly a motivational factor when it comes to chess.

@@Sarah-oj7bh 1. This isn't always true. I can prove that no elephant currently exists in my bedroom by checking. 2. While it would be very difficult (maybe impossible) to prove that there are no genetic differences that cause women to be worse chess players than men on average, we can look at specific chess-related abilities that men tend to be better at, such as visual-spatial reasoning. Basically, we shouldn't say that there are or are not genetic differences that cause women to be worse chess players than men on average. It's something we just don't know yet, so that's what we should say if we want to be intellectually honest.
