Magnus Carlsen takes on Africa no.1 Bassem Amin | World Blitz 2021 | Commentary by Sagar

Спорт

Africa no.1 Bassem Amin took on World no.1 Magnus Carlsen at the World Blitz 2021. The game is very exciting because Magnus chooses an offbeat variation against the Sicilian Rossolimo and then manages to put his opponent under tremendous pressure. Amin is equally up to the challenge and plays excellently to equalize. But in the late endgame Magnus Carlsen weaves his magic! Don't miss out on this beautiful encounter with IM Sagar Shah doing the commentary.

as someone already commented, the indian commentator makes the game really exciting to watch. this was a close match with both players playing their best. however under pressure Amin made a simple endgame error of allowing Magnus's king to simply walk up the board kingside while white was held back to defensive position. the indian commentator is right in finding so quickly an answer to Magnus's play. Amin could have drawn this game had he followed the correct move order. But any granmaster is likely to miss such difficult challenging move. Magnus appears to be superior in endgame play while Amin managed to prove himself a strong competitor who can also give Magnus real challenges. Notice however how easily Magnus initiates an attack and which he never stops doing till the end of the game. So one important lesson to be learned is when playing Magnus always make sure that you are on the attacking side of the game which will give you greater chances of winning, of course that is assuming that you are a gm who knows the game well. But it seems that in 99 percent of his games Magnus is always doing creative attacking actions, putting his opponents under extreme pressure. The passed G pawn should not have been allowed. Probably a bad choice of endgame play was to have traded pawns and allowed Magsus a passed G pawn. Also bishops of opposite color would have resulted probably in a draw, assuming that all is done correctly and according to theory. When Magnus traded rooks Amin should have paused to think about what is the best course to follow he had two open files to worry about and avoid Magnus's penetration of rook into Amin's camp. Once Amin decided to go on the h file, he should not have relinquished that position. But Magnus then took over the g and h file and both his rook and king went to support the passed g pawn. Perhaps in these rapid games there is little time to think of endgame strategy, but Amin's decision of h x g probably was not the best choice since it gave black's rook mobility and allowed possibilities to attack inside white's territory, which is exactly what happened during the game. already Amin had secured the advantage of controlling the open b file, which was positive for him. Black's only option was to stir up something on the other side of the board. observe how Magnus intentionally protects his pawns on D7 and A4 with the bishop on C6, thereby also securing against Amin's rook penetration into black's camp by way of rook b7, with the bishop also attacking white's pawns on E4, F3 and G2. Amin's endgame problems are quite visible, he fails to position his pawns in dark squares and away from black's light color bishop's aim. actually all of Amin's pawns at one point were on light squares, which basic endgame theory tells you that is a no no to do: in putting your pawns in the opposite color of your enemy's bishop you are both safeguarding against possible scopes of attack and weakening your opponent's power as the bishop can no long threaten them. that is simple endgame logic which Amin should have known prior to entering endgame against Magnus. Finally observe how Magnus manages to keep white's king in the middle of the board guarding the bishop and protecting itself against black's rook check. clearly in endgames you don't want to be in that position. Your kind should be free to move and powerful wherever it goes on the board. For example, Magnus's king does that, it has both the freedom and power to leisurely travel up the board without any worries. Black's rook is assisting in that by both attacking white's bishop with a take and check and controlling the g file. meanwhile black's bishop now is defending a fully passed g pawn. so obviously Amin made some bad trade decisions. white's only hope is its passed f pawn that the black king must watch closely. After white lost its f pawn, all hopes of winning were gone. Black then was in a totally winning position, its king being finally set free from the duty of watching white's f pawn that threatened to promote. Notice also how white's other pawns are badly positioned and attacked, the C4 pawn is wrongly placed on a light square and left vulnerable while the A3 pawn might be taken if left unguarded. Also Magnus's pressure on Amin is so strong over the board that it forces Amin to now rely on his king and bishop for protection against black's rook checks and attacks on the pawns. This of course further weakens white's pieces where the bishop is no longer doing anything useful as a major attacking piece but has been surrendered to practically a pawn protecting white's king while also defending against black's g pawn promotion. When Magnus's king marches up the board to support the isolated passed g pawn, it is all over. Amin's king has been effectively removed from half the board (left on D2 where it is useless and in a hopeless situation) unable to lend any further support to his lonesome rook that desperately tries to stop the promotion of black's g pawn. Personally i do not like Amin's opening choice and the idea of his knight going to A3 early in the game. To me it was clear how Magnus was going to proceed early in the game after he had made the B6 move and instead of his bishop going to A4 a better move was bishop F1 which might have resulted in a better more secure game for him. Bishops of the same color should confront each other, although sometimes they do not and it is up to the players to make them useful in fighting at opposite sides. However, with a player of the caliber of Magnus it is best to keep an eye on his bishops. Magnus's knights were coordinated at one point in the game while Amin's knights were disoriented. Also probably the worst play by Amin happens when he allows Magnus's C pawn to move upward and deeper into enemy territory to C4, restricting white's pawn structure and the mobility of its major pieces while also later threatening to control D3 square with white's knight and pawn operation. one of Amin's best moves was to immediately seize control of the B file with his rook. Yet his earlier move of rook F1 is somewhat doubtful and perhaps a better move could have been found. another move that was not discussed by the commentator is queen x C3?? why such move is good or bad for black? i believe strongly that in order to better understand chess we should consider the what ifs of evolving positions that transform the game with each passing move. Magnus is a very careful and not just calculative player, perhaps that is the secret to his strength and why he normally plays better than other talented gms. He probably immediately sensed the danger of taking the C3 pawn, or perhaps he did not see it at all? I think that he did but realized that his bishop was hanging, although further analysis might reveal whether or not black's move was good. Finally, it is amazing the way Magnus manages to quickly move his pieces in the endgame, and not just moving pieces but making powerful and precisely calculate advances, almost as if a magician was playing with the audience. strong endgame players, like the great genius capablanca played this way, possessing the power to foresee endgame results right from the very opening and middlegame. when Magnus exchanged rooks, that was the point when he knew he can win in the endgame. something to think about in fact. Then threatening to move his rook either from the H or B file to penetrate Amin's prairie fields was part of his endgame strategy. Amin never saw it coming, he was constantly caught off guard and was simply responding to many of Magnus's threats and pressure. So clearly Magnus was the better player in this game. Perhaps in other future games Amin may prove himself a worthy opponent, and no doubt that he is already, just not this time. However more impressive was the indian commentator's quick reactions and how easily and quickly he found the correct move that would have solved all of Amin's problems over the board. Was the commentator using a computer program that alerted him of that move sequence? probably or maybe not, who knows. but he sure knows what he is doing and i doubt that people here were quick enough to find such a move. in the end the players shook hands, Amin admitted defeat and Magnus went home all calm as usual. this game as noted by many youtubers was quite fun and entertaining thanks to the great comments of the indian commentator who ads special flavor and sauce to the sports of chess. it is similar to the commentators of a soccer game when a team scores and he yells goooooooooaaaaaal! nice wonderful video, great job posting this for fans of chess. ok that's all folks! hope you enjoyed my comments. thanks

Watch where the players places the Kings on the board at the end of the game. If white king is on white square and black king is on black square it’s a draw. If both kings are placed on white. White wins. If both kings are on black. Black wins. 😃

At 10:20 magnus was about to promote his g2 pawn to queen. As a result of that Amin has to give up his rook for Magnus new queen. So, Magnus will be full piece up and his bishop can gobble up Amin remaining pawns, plus Magnus can easily promote his other pawns. Thus, easily converting the game. As Amin knew this plan he resigned (accepted his defeat) , instead of allowing Magnus to checkmate him. P.S. These matches have time increment(mostly) with each move, so players can't just forcefully drain down the opponents time for claiming victory.

His opponent misses a draw. Magnus Carlsen's rook is doing more than his opponents. Amin needed to trade them off too ensure a drawn game.

Basset could only move his king and rook at the end. Magnus could move his king, a bishop, and two pawns, one of which was about to get queened. Magnus has the upper hand.
