Not at all. Its his intuition from seeing countless other positions. His brain goes "ive seen a similar position and in that position it was this" and then his brain branches into tactical nodes about what his position has that may be different than others hes seen. He studied really hard and made leaning fun.

I will try to explain why it is Queen A8: Black has only 2 pieces that can be moved and those are the Queen and the Rook. king is surrounded by pieces attacking every square around it and it can not capture the rook on f3 because of the bishop attacking the square of the rook. Pawns cant move down because king and rook block those squares. So if the Queen is standing on A8 there is a Zugzwang for black where he has to move away a piece to worsen the position since the Queen pins the rook or queen with the king. After the move from black you have to just move the knight on b7 to c5 or d6 depending on the move black made so only the piece that did not move last turn could capture the knight (except for the moves on c5 and d6 where you just capture the queen or rook on that square). Since those 2 moves with the knight give a check to the king black had to capture the knight with the piece that haa not moved last turn but they are the last defender of the King from the Queen so because of the pin they cant capture and it is a forced checkmate.

uselessly complex answer, just play knight f5, black can do 23 different moves, it doesn't matter, non of them can stop rook e3 anyway, the idea behind qa8 is that black must move but they can only move their rook or their queen, when the knight gives check (either on c5 or d6) the remaining rook or queen is pinned to the king by the queen. The piece that moved away cant cover both c5 and d6

Ok i got why so : QA8 After white plays QA8, The black HAVE to move either rook or queen as king is pat and pawns are stuck If black plays QD4 Then white plays RE3 Double check and king can’t move so checkmate If black moves the queen or the rook anywhere else White plays KC5 or KD6 so that the piece that just moved can’t take it back The other piece is pinned by the queen so knight can’t be taken Knight checks, can’t be take and king can’t move Checkmate

Qa8... if Qd4 Re3# (It's double check, so the pawn can't capture - this only works when Qd4 or the King can escape to d4 with the white Rook blocking the bishop). otherwise, Nc5# or Nd6# whichever lost a defender with blacks last move, as the other defender is now pinned.

when Magnus solves a puzzle the puzzle is in time pressure not Magnus

Qa8 pins either the rook or the queen (whichever doesn't move) after the knight moves. This means Nc5 or Nd6 will be mate. White will choose the square that is not defended by the piece that is not pinned (the one that moves). The only square that covers both those mates is Qd4, but Magnus saw that this takes away the king's escape square so Re3 is mate with double check.
