Magnus Carlsen Reinvented His Chess Opening

Ойындар

Magnus Carlsen Reinvented His Chess Opening by playing a brand new chess variation of the mighty plow, pawn to h4. Carlsne loves playing dubious chess openings and now we see him developing modern plow theory in this cutting edge of chess. This chess game played in the titled Tuesday chess tournament, 2nd January 2024 against Sergei Zhigalko

Hard to know if he's trying to break people out of prep/theory, he's developing new ways of playing or if he's just bored. Whatever, he wins.

I honestly think he's a bit bored and playing around and having fun. I think that's the primary of it, it's not like he NEEDS to break people out of theory... I think he might be enjoying this chess.

Definitely not a new way of playing, and I bet he'd say don't try this at home. He only does it in blitz to get them out of theory because they won't have enough time to punish the "bad" playing like they would with classic time controls. Meanwhile though they eat up time since they're out of book and it's Magnus' positional intuition against theirs instead of his preparation versus theirs.

There’s nothing more for Magnus to accomplish. Yeah, he’s probably trolling a bit, but he’s also getting away from standard theory and exploring new concepts. I wonder if embracing that same mindset would have prolonged Fischer’s career.

to me it seems that magnus likes to play as far away from theory as possible as early as possible, in a sense this is what fisher always strived for with his critique on chess that it has become more about meorization than creativity

Or, alternatively, both Magnus and Bobby were head and shoulders above their peers and can play "bad openings" and get away with it.

Remember when Fischer was ranting about hating chess because everything was just memorizing lines and there was a lack of creativity and joyful play? Well, it seems Magnus understood it and decided to do something about it. He knows how to deliver a strong middlegame and a strong endgame too and that's all he needs. It doesn't matter what he plays at opening, he's thinking in how to reach that middlegame he's already seeing in his mind. In Kasparov words: He squeezes water out of stones.

It's not that the opening is good, it's that it's different. Whatever gets them out of their starch pressed memorization. Carlsen's real opening is therefore The Ghost, which is the opening that has no book, regardless of which move. No bones to anatomize.

Magnus's strategy is very simple. However it only works if you're Magnus Carlsen. 1) Play a crap opening. 2) Let your opponent sweat and use up their clock. 3) Wait until they flub due to time pressure and then crush them. 3b) If they don't flub then just start clearing out pieces to get to the endgame. Which you will win. Because you're Magnus Carlsen.

I'm not a GM by any means, but it seems like chess is such a game of memorization of lines at high levels. Magnus playing lines that haven't been studied make it so the stronger chess player will win, because there isn't a data bank of what move to make next. Is this right or off base?

Hello and greetings from Germany. At 2:43: "Zwischenzug" is pronounced with two very clear "z" = "\ts" as in English "tsunami". Both of the "z" are like you pronounced the first one. The second "z" for "Zug" is neither soft as in "dizzy" nor sharp like in "sun". And the "g" in the end is not a soft "g" like in "good", but pronounced as a "k" like in "Luke". Thanks for your great videos!
