Carlsen did similar stuff repeatedly in bullet titled arenas on lichess. He'd swap the positions of the queen and king in the opening and then play

These videos got me excited about chess again. Exciting to see Magnus defy convention, and helpful to have it broken down in this way.

i think he's bored TBH - hence the weird openings
That creepy crawly opening could be called the birdbath opening.
He almost won with a really bad opening. U guess he didn't study that upper right area for the mate idea. Would have been a great comeback.
2:39 you know he was just itching to play Ke2. being "forced" to do it is no hardship
How do you do the game recording? Do you just use a video editor or there is a special feature on Lichess that I didn't find yet?

So you open the game up and record the board and press moves forward as you talk

Nice switch, love it! Keep them coming!
9:42 -- after Black's *Nf4* , White has the amazing resource *Bf3 !!* -- a stunning move which paralyzes Black's plans and makes a seemingly imminent victory much trickier to acquire. Don't get me wrong: Black is *STILL* ahead, but *the win is **_FAR_** from trivial* , and, in fact, with sub-par play, and *especially against MAGNUS* , may be IMPOSSIBLE to achieve in this case !! :O .

Wow. If anyone could remember the name of Yuniesky Quesada Perez, he'd be in a great spot. Carlsen overplayed it in a big way. He should've played e4 about 56 moves earlier.
Found the bishop capture. took me a minute though, can't fault magnus for not seeing in short time and without the benefit of knowing he has a winning move
Nice double fork giving up the one knight than capturing with the other and forking the Queen I think Magnus went a bit too far with his opening this time I really thought he was going to win again anyway he usually finds a way to win regardless thanks for the Game James Enjoyed enjoy your day 😊♟️
keep the mumour up. make analysis awesome! great video
I can't belive a 3000 rated player fell for that opening trap. It is such a common idea in many openings.
@mrdraw2087

Maybe it was intentional. Black was saying to white: "If you want to play a crap opening, I'm going to sac a piece for some vague attacking chances." It worked out brilliantly. Carlsen was completely out of his comfort-zone.
Mad Magnus : Fury Squares
Good to know that he can’t get away with absolutely anything. Thanks James.

Well he kind of did though, he had lots of winning chances and failed to capitalise.
9:00 amazing Magnus didn't see this pattern as he's usually all over the board like a rash, but like you say probably having an off day

But he should have won. There were a couple of places, one early, one late where he played just totally wrong. It wasn't the opening that screwed him -- he actually was winning out of the opening after a few moves. It was his follow through.
Even Magnus isn't perfect.
Damn herring.
Still think a video of you playing 5 of Magnus’ wildest openings would get views… schadenfreude is powerful, watching you trying to win, with ELO on the line… 🤣🙏

Somewhere in heaven the great Michael Basman is disappointed that Magnus did not win this game. Michael Basman was a legend in british chess, he terrorized a lot of players with his sacrificial attacks.

It’s strangely satisfying when these disrespectful openings back fire 😂
@lenonkitchens7727

I don't *think* it's disrespect. I think it's quite the opposite, in fact. I think Magnus knows he stands to lose or draw at least 50% of the time if he plays standard openings, because these guys are *good*. He's playing non-standard openings to pull them out of theory, taking a positional disadvantage and counting on himself being a better (out of theory) chess player. And if we're being honest, he's usually right, and it's working for him. That's just my opinion though. Could be wrong.
@mikecroke6078

@@lenonkitchens7727 it’s definitely a valid theory. But in my mind I see Magnus laughing as plays these outrageous moves. I could also be dead wrong about it too tho lol. The whole thing is pretty funny to be honest

@@mikecroke6078 I mean, you could be totally right. Maybe Magnus is a big old asshole at heart. I don't get that feeling from him though, and I don't think he'd jeopardize his standings or rating just to goof on some people. I don't know though. Could go either way. :D
Maybe Magnus has been using some drugs a night before. Who knows.
This is not called the invention of a new opening!!! An opening that leads to a loss is not an opening

How can his opponent be a grand master. Who makes the bishop move, and closes the gate without seeing the consequences.
Something smells fishy about all this

Good to see Magnus becoming a victim of his own bullshit.
the seesaw is a better name for the plough
Just because Carlsen plays something does not mean it's good. If Black were playing a beginner he probably would have have met 1.a3?! d5 2.h4? with 2...e5, and that's what he should have played here.
Sich auf unbekanntes Rerrain zu begeben, kann auch fuer Carlsen gefaehrlich sein; Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall!

So, you are saying that Cagnus Marlsen did something great again? Damn. so surprised... On a serious note, that guy is a fucking genius. The goat, no doubt about that, if there was any. Hats off.
You like to keep the winning advantage secret for yourself I can tell. But it's dishonest to do so. And it also makes the game that much less interesting to watch. This why you always demonstrate the match from the winner's side of the aboard. The only exception to this rule- is when you're exposing a cheater perhaps... And you want to demonstrate the easy winning advantage the non- cheater had before the cheater fired up his Chess bot to win the game.

Also if the idea was just to run away, Magnus could have stopped that by moving his own Queen to the first file, check mating black on the spot if his king ever stepped there.

magnus does this crap very often, assuming that he will be able to outplay his opponent in the middle game, and especially, the endgame. he's almost always right. but let's be honest ... his opening is crap. OCCASIONALLY, you run into someone who plays very well, and then magnus loses. when that happens, magnus has no right to call his opponent a cheater. it's just not on.
Magnus is bored with these GMs, only way to make it fun is to play unplayed variations. But how did He miss that bishop move? Even the greatest misses moves!
