I do love them -- magnificent breed. I have ridden a hybrid (part clydesdale, part Qtr horse) and he was sooo gentle (+ a scaredy-cat) they named him "Little Wussy"! 🤭🤭 He was great, but he tricked the person who strapped him in (bloated out his stomach), so when we went to cantor, his saddle AND I slide to his side belly...surrounded by a pack of other horses w/riders...Then, down I went...Just glad I didn't get foot caught in stirrup or trampled by others... Oh, yeah, I remember "Little Wussy" 🥴

In the 60s, I grew up in an old farmhouse next to a big field that was home to a huge farm workhorse and a huge traditional southern-type mule. The horse didn't often run full out but when he did, if I was outside barefoot, I could feel the impact of his hoofs vibrate in the ground as he ran through the field. I adored that patient dear horse and spent a lot of time, with little success, trying to figure out ways to scramble up on his back. When I was able to, which happened rarely, he would promptly walk over to a tree with a low-hanging branch and scrape me off, all the while continuing to calmly graze on field grass.

That's funny...."scrape me off" .......I can relate to that.....when I was around 10 years old my uncle and aunt had a small farm with a few farm animals and a small pony that we always wanted to ride him but he wouldn't have none of it. We would bribe him with some apples to get him to open his mouth and while chewing that gave us the opportunity to slide the bit in his mouth but we already had the rest of it in position so when we got it in his mouth we would be ready. When I say ready I mean I would already have a handful of his mane in my left hand so when he felt the bit in his mouth he would take off. I would pull my self up with that handful of hair on his neck and throw my right leg over him and bareback him.....then hang on for dear life because he would be wide open in a full run. We were only successful about 3 times out of 10 but it was fun and most of the time pretty painful because when you got thrown off it was at a full running speed, luckily we didn't get hurt too bad.

My Grandson has seen and rode Horses at my wife's friend's ranch. When they came to Louisiana the Clydesdales were housed at the local area for the Mardi Gras Parade years ago. I bought him to the stables, and he had never seen one before. It was a free tour. When Joseph saw those Horses, he was speechless. When we got back to the truck, he could not stop taking about them.

I once had the fantastic experience of helping to unbox two of Youngs Brewery Shires that had arrived at a friends farm for a two week vacation. They had spent the rest of the year in their stables in Wandsworth, London and this was the first time their feet had touched grass in all that time. The sheer joy they showed in being in that environment was beautiful, two massive Shires galloping around in a field with the earth shaking as they went by was something I shall never forget.

I have two Percherons (Tyson and Tonka) that I adopted from a hoarding situation many years ago. They spent most of their lives together there in a stall too small for both of them and never received any vet or farrier care. Now, they are two very huge, happy, and healthy boys that love to run around the fields. After they are fed in the morning and I let them out, they act like little kids running out for recess. I love and adore them, and they will never want for anything and will be with me for the rest of their lives.

We had a pair on our farm back in the sixties. Though they no longer worked, my dad would use them to till our big vegetable garden out back of our house and they would work it like they’d never retired…..knew all the calls and whistles and seemed to really love it. They spent their days in pasture and sometimes us kids would run out and find them and bring them back to the barn and ride them….bare back of course….they were like big comfy couches and so gentle. Then we’d brush them down and give them some oats….I truly believe they loved the attention. …great memories to pass on to my grand kiddies ❤

When I was about 11 years old, I knew a similar Clydesdale called Prince. I used to pick grass and feed him at the fence. He was absolutely huge, with gentle movements and kind eyes. His owner was a young girl of about 16. She used to gallop on Prince bareback along an old unpaved uneven road with many potholes. I used to watch them in awe. Prince was sure of his footings and never once stumbled. I always got the impression he was proud of carrying her safely on his back.

He is stunning. There aren't many things as satisfying as seeing the big boys gallop and show off their everything. They are truly magnificent creatures.
