I read that magnesium oxide is no soluble to water. I have some copper pipes filled with magnesium oxide which I want to remove the compacted powder. It's a water heater element so the copper piper is a wire resistor all the way through it end to end and filled with magnesium oxide for insulation. I want to remove the magnesium oxide but water doesn't seem to do anything. If anybody know how I can remove it or dissolve it let me know please. I will try an acid of some kind perhaps cleaning vinegar or hydrochloric acid.

All oxides do this due to the electronegativity of oxygen? I'm confused as to how there wouldn't be instances where the oxide simply wouldn't disolve at all. Something like lithium would disolve while a less electronegative metal, like iron, wouldn't (or if it did, it wouldn't dissolve as readily and require a higher ratio of water for each interval of the metal oxide). I'm trying to figure this out because magnesium oxide is an incredibly inexpensive source of magnesium (it's essentially ash, so I'd imagine a lot of industry produces it as waste product) and taking it orally is a mixed bag of information regarding its bioavailability. This seems especially so for pill forms of MgO as they have to break down into a powder to dissolve fully in the gastrointestinal tract.

Magnesium Oxide does not dissolve in water it reacts to for Magnesium Hydroxide and some water vapor. Magnesium Hydroxide is insoluble. Mg being a base metal kinda gives it away..
