He actually did a podcast with one of the producers of the show explaining how fool us is run. The discussion between penn, teller and the producers takes about ten minutes before they tell the producers how they think it was done, they get ONE chance to get it. If they get it wrong, they have been fooled no matter what. The producers then figure out a way for Penn to communicate how they thought (incorrectly) it was done to the performer, who says no and they get the trophy moment. Penn and Teller are at no point told how it is done until after the show, if they ask, and they very rarely do, due to professional courtesy. The producers are told exactly how it is done, and shown twice in a row so they can figure out the best presentation of the effect for the studio audience and the TV cameras, so the illusion isn’t spoiled accidentally. You also have to bear in mind that Penn & Teller only see the routine once in real time, and don’t have the luxury of replays and slow motion.

I think Penn was still speaking in code. He asked him if "that ring", the one in his hand, was gimmicked. They saw no switch which means the ring in his hand needed to be real for it to be sleight of hand. He knew exactly what he was asking. Amazing sleight of hand.

Exactly right... When the trick is done with sleight of hand, Penn and Teller have to actually see the move for them to not be fooled.. otherwise just about every trick they could just say "sleight of hand" and never be fooled lol I'm pretty sure they've stated this before like with Shin Lim... They knew he was doing sleight of hand but they couldn't actually catch some of the moves which means he fooled them

I'm a bit mixed on this. A linguistic victory in some context, but he still said the words ''if you can tell us that was done in anyway other than pure sleight of hand, then we're not gonna lie, you fooled us''. He didn't actually answer penns question. Just said ''That is a completely normal ring'' which means he didn't fool them, he just never owned up to Penn being right by avoiding the topic like a politician xD. 3.56 at 0.25x speed, yeah I spoiled it for myself but you can clearly see that ring open on tellers finger.

You guys are getting it. The ring at the end was real. That's all that matters. If he had a gimmicked ring or what I believe was a half ring, they didn't see the switch. One of the other replies clarifies this. They saw nothing, they made sure they said that to him. He was able to switch from a real ring to a gimmicked ring and back. That's sleight of hand and they didn't see the switch. He fooled them.

I think it is important to note that Penn's wording was "If you had that ring gimmicked in any way..." in reference to the ring given to Teller and "If it is anything other that a ring that comes apart" referring more to the trick as a hole. The first statement could have been arguably beaten with a simple swap that P&T admitted to not have been able to catch. The second statement however was more definitive and was responded to with "It does not come apart." That rules out any break in the opening up of a solid ring. I think it is safe to assume that more than one ring, or partial ring was used, but that none of them had any moving parts to them.

I think any sensible person would know that there must have been a shell or a gimmick ring in the middle of the act. The fooling part was he gave out a ring for examination seemingly without a switch. That means either the switch was really really good, or the gimmick ring was crafted very very good so it can be examined (even by Teller) without giving away its secret. To say it's a pure slight of hand, has to mean he did a switch under Teller's nose without getting caught. And that is amazing.

I’ve had the pleasure of watching Garrett perform up close. He’s amazing. Even when he showed me what he’s doing, I was still in awe of his skills. It never gets old. I think he’s one of the best sleight of hand artists out there. And no, he didn’t lie. He answered Penn honestly. It’s sleight of hand. And it’s flawless. It’s like watching a Globetrotter with a basketball. Always entertaining and equally as skillful and practiced. He creates a dual reality, for sure, Jason. FYI: He’s got some talks you can find on KZread where he talks about his philosophy of magic and it really excites me. The idea of showing something that’s not there. And I highly suggest his stuff he sells, especially Opus, if you’re interested in learning more and taking a deep dive into how to get better with magic. There are two rings, one that is fully circular, and the other has an opening. At the end of the trick, the one with the opening is placed over the full ring and appear as one.

@@noir530 except it does because one ring is open and the other is whole. Two rings. One is gimmickry that can be passed over a finger. The sleight of hand is what is so incredible. He has gotten so good at palming the prop and showing only the whole ring. Which explains the thumb trick. Both have a ring on em. It isn’t a switch.

without seeing your comment, I also found that time 3:42.. .. you can see, there is "S"-shape .. so he had 1 gimmicked ring ... or 1 normal ring + half ring

At 4:08 he slaps his hands together as if they are empty, but the half ring is apparently in his left hand. He sneaks it into his pocket at 4:09 .

@@DavidSmith-pg1ob clearly at 3:42 there are two metal parts or rings if you slow it down in his hand. It can be seen for a fraction of second right there. Same at 4:05, there's clearly a gap in the ring and it seems he hands over the same ring to Teller. Weird

Most times I can know what people do with slight of hand, but knowing the trick is the easy part, performing it is the hard and sometimes impossible part. #respectmagicians

Looks to me he had 2 rings, you can clearly see one is ticker than the other, the thicker one is a real ring. The middle finger missing, is actually behind the front fingers, and then he moves it in front during transition to show it missing from the back, it's just a lots of finger training involved, he's quite strong in that area, physically strong.
