Yo J! Just left us with one question. Can you explain it to us what is "Black Art'' really is??? and how does it works? Thanks so much!!!
What struck me was how confidently he presented himself during his performance, looking powerfully into the camera. I was not expecting that emotional reaction after having seen him perform so strongly. This was absolutely beautiful. I noticed a few things along the way, even without going back a second time to rewatch it. But I would love to see him perform live.

Josh, I heartily agree. The wonderful aspect of Japanese culture is humility. It is so refreshing to see. The audience felt the genuine release of emotion or a man who most likely practiced until (almost) flawless. (I say "almost" because with certain camera angles, one sees a card being held behind the other (and the glass in his back pocket, concealed underneath the jacket tail). What a beautiful performance.

I actually noticed he was a little bit nervous, this clearly means a lot to him. But I think he handled the situation amazingly well. Maybe a bad choice using a red card behind a white one? Even then, a really great perfomance.

Japanese have this thing they do where if they do something wrong and have to apologize to people, they reeaaallllly exaggerate the emotions, otherwise it's not deemed as authentic. I imagine this was just a display of that same behavior to show he really is appreciative of fooling them. Didn't seem real to me.

Ryan Hayashi also went very emotional when fooling PnT. I think they are confident when performing and confident when showing emotions in appreciation. Like they can control the flow of emotions: keep them away or let them flow freely.

I wonder if these types of acts are more common in Asia (does the culture promote it?) or is it just that these types of acts are the ones that translate well for a predominately English speaking audience (both in person and on TV). For example, most Penn and Teller routines have significant dialogue (or monologue) that would lose a lot if you couldn't understand what they were saying or they were less strong with the language. There was one performer from Spain on Fool Us who commented on this issue, that he switched to miming his acts because the dialogue created issues for an international audience.

Frzned9x Lots of magic acts are done without speaking. If someone like Penn is quiet, you assume there is a reason, but i would guess most of this guy’s acts involve very little speech.
You know whenever Penn doesn't speak in code and just starts stating methods directly, it's going to be a Fooler.

Sometimes he gives away a lot by not talking in code!
Old timer subscriber here! Was amazing to see Yukihiro's genuine emotional response at the end... he is now the first Japanese fooler! Loved his story about how he's adored magic since his class teacher vanished a piece of chalk when he was 6... no wonder he was so emotional. Beautiful backstory and performance, thanks for this Jason!
Damned onions. I'm not crying, YOU'RE crying! I think what you saw from Yukihiro at the end was an emotional release after months and months of extremely dedicated and very hard work. It's always a beautiful thing when one can take their technical talents and turn it into art.
That was one of the coolest reactions a fooler has ever had. Hands down. I have never seen a person from Japan hug another person in public. That was cool! The expression of emotion in that level of performance and after he won was amazing and I want to see more of him.
Possibly the best reaction to winning on the show. I also think it's awesome that the first trophy to someone from Japan went to someone so sweet and modest. Because I seem to recall others who explicitly said that they "want to earn the first trophy for Japan" who might of course still be alright people overall but at least didn't strike me as as nice.
I'm glad Penn asked those questions because he eliminated a couple of my guesses. I have 1 more idea as far as the glass is concerned, but if it isn't that then I'm dumbfounded. I'm also glad he fooled them because that is the most genuine, purely happy reactions they've had and you can tell it really meant the world to him. However, my favorite part had to be when Penn told the translator to tell him very clearly that he fooled them and she exclaimed "YOU FOOLED THEM!"

@@icthulu Yes, the thumb motions required were too visible. Not that it is easy to see during the performance. Another case where I'm sure P&T knew what he did, just not how the stem worked. That's why they listed all those questions, to show they knew other ways, but not his way.
@DL-kc8fc
3 жыл бұрын
@@pl5bnsf Of course, that's why Penn listed ways that weren't (!) used (rotation, mirror, black theater). He knew that it was about top-notch juggling, which is not used much in our concept of "magic" and therefore he could communicate the mentioned ways without a "code", without putting the magician in an embarrassing situation - it's a show !!!

One of the top 5 sleight of hand acts I've ever seen! Amazing!
One of the very best acts, especially with no words and that Japanese approach. And then all guards are down as he gets a trofee! You can clearly see he manipulates something with a finger at the bottom of the glass each time he does something, but what? Electronics? I have no idea, but boy, I can watch this over and over again!
I could sworn I saw him twist the glass but knew it would be hard to fool the crowd on the ends. Great trick
Yukihiro's routine was absolutely amazing, I really enjoyed that one and actually hearing a couple of my thoughts for how it was done discounted in Penn's questioning made it even better. I loved this one.
Well that was ridiculously wholesome.
Jason cracks me up in the most subtle way and I love it lol

Yay, another reaction! Haha, glad you reacted to this act, it was my fav by far :)
What a beautiful performance, and his humility is something we should all learn from.
This was truly elegant.
I've seen this performance quite a few times and every time I get to the part where Yukihiro gets emotional because of the winning, I get tears in my eyes; believe me, every single time. And every time I also get the same thought over and over, I just can't imagine how many hundreds of hours he spent to be able to performance this act in front of this two guys, the big sacrifice and nights without sleeping.
Loved his tears. Amazing. Super genuine reaction.
He really appreciated the win and trophy. So nice to see all the hard work paid off. Well done Yukihiro!!
I simply love when card magicians do these sort of mystical routines with soothing music. He is very talented, but I think the real magic is how he calmed me throughout. Felt like I was meditating.
What an absolutely amazing performance. I was blown away. And I loved his reaction. He put on such an emotionally evocative performance, particularly for wonder and surprise, and it's really great to see performers allow themselves to be overcome with happiness when they fool P&T. Loved it loved it loved it.
If cards were fine wines Yukihiro is a _Sommelier Extraordinaire_
After rewinding and rewatching, this trick gets more and more amazing. Can’t say I figured it out(but I do have a hunch, but even still the technicalities behind it are still baffling ), but that just makes it more fun to watch. But thumbs up to him. He did a good job!. I’m not a magician, but maybe some will get the code that I’m talking about.

At the very end he seems to snap his fingers on the base of the glass at the exact moment the card vanishes...awesome act, trick glasses used to my eyes
This show is so much better with your commentary. Great show with true humility. I once gave up my seat in a hotel restaurant in Hong Kong to two Japanese ladies and we went through that bowing scene. I forgot how I got out of it but I do remember how good it felt and yes humbling.
I'm not sure I've ever seen something so mindblowing presented with such simplicity.
Yukihiro Katayama totally deserves winning the Fool Us Trophy. I was absolutely amazed by his sleight of hand skills. I think the back of the glass was open. So, Yukihiro was able to put the card in the glass so quickly. I am trying to make a rhyme of the moral of the Aesop's fable: Best friends forever Live and die together

I liked your interpretation of the fable. I also liked your alternate ending. The Farquhar interview was great. I hope it gets a lot of views.
I liked how colourful his performance was. Using a glas in combination with the cards is brilliant.
This act reminds me of the 2012 French grand prix of magic with Yu ho Jin. Elegance in the extreme and Asian level magic. He's officially the first magician from Japan to get a FU trophy to take back home. Clearly it meant so much to him to get it. 👏🙂
Great performance to watch just magical
I love your honest reactions.
The cameras from multiple angles in the show immediately gave the trick away for me at the start. But since Penn/Teller wouldn't have that advantage, I can see how they were fooled. Great trick.

I have watch this in slow mo and was able to see a couple of the gimmick he used. Still it's amazing the amount of control to be able to do the trick in an stage that size.

Absolutely stunning performance. And I liked that Japanese thing in the end.
Beautiful music, loved the backdrop. His movements were smooth but watch his thumb at the base of the wine glass.
You are right, the way he is doing the cards appearing in the glass angle sensitive and we can see that at one point when the camera wasn't at the perfect angle.

This act was reminiscent of a Mike Chao act. Very elegant, slow and complex. This is the second time I’ve watched this so it’s still hard to catch things. I’ve watched Shin Lim an unhealthy amount of times and have figured out about 95% of the stuff he does. In doing so, you would think that I would cease being impressed, but it’s the opposite. I’m even more impressed because I know just how difficult to do a trick as clean as he does it. This was an amazing act.
