Magic Set Review - Dark Ascension

Ойындар

Dark Ascension is the second set of the original Innistrad block, one of the most well received blocks in Magic’s history. The setting was so popular that Wizards has returned to it on two separate occasions, and we’re likely to visit it again at some point. Today, we’re going to revisit this set and see if it’s a worthy successor to one of the most influential sets in the game. Though, before we start this video, I would recommend watching the Innistrad set review for proper context.

I like that the flavor text on Tragic Slip essentially says, "f*** around and find out".

Something I would add is that Dark Ascension has a much more restricted version of the color imbalance that we saw in Torment. Both of the utility lands in the cycle used black mana, black got an extra multi-colored mythic, there was no W/G lord or W/G mythic, and two non-black transform cards turned black. This was balanced in Avacyn Restored, where white was very slightly over-represented.

Honestly, I think this is your best format!👏👏👏 Those sets reviews are really insightful and let you either reexperiment the set (nostalgiaaaa) or discover it. I feel you should you do more of those, there are great videos and you got lots of material to use. Can't wait to hear about Avacyn Restored.🙌

4:59 As someone who played Green/White Humans during the standard format that Dark Ascension came out to, the most relevant part of Gather the Townsfolk is that the tokens it made were humans. This was extremely relevant as there were still a bunch of cards legal from the Scars set, as well as Innistrad proper, that put some good buffs on to that type, and having two extra human tokens could actually win you the game in some circumstances. They also traded well due to how many one toughness creatures there were in the format, though they did get bricked by an Undying triggered Young Wolf. Later on, once RTR block had completely come out, Gather would be relevant again as part of a Junk (now known as Abzan) Aristocrats deck that would run the format for a bit because it was such a value heavy deck that had multiple ways of winning. The thing I most remember about Dark ascension, was that the format was awful if you weren't playing some kind of control. Sorin could brick red decks very hard with his tokens having lifelink and with Lilianna coming down the turn before and either forcing a discard or a creature sac, it was very possible that Sorin could enter onto an empty field. And let me tell you, that was a genuinely terrifying prospect. This was also before Wizards decided that 4 mana boardwipes were too good, so there was a Wrath of God effect available in this format, and it would also be one of the last formats to have unconditional instant speed removal that cost less than three mana. Of course, I say all of this, and the best deck in standard was Delver of Secrets. It turns out a one mana 3/2 with flying is pretty hard to deal with, and you could transform it very easily as cards like Ponder were still legal at the time since this was before Wizards decided that draw spells costing less than three mana and weren't creatures were too good. You will also discover, like many of us who played in that period did, that the phrase "Wizards decided this effect that had always been in the game at this mana cost was now too good for Standard" is a recurring theme over the next few blocks as Wizards drastically reduced the power level of Instants/Sorceries while increasing the power of creatures (this was called Battlecruiser magic and is the precursor of today's design formula). Two mana removal spells would no longer be instant speed, be target removal, be unconditional, or would have a very difficult mana cost (see Abrupt Decay from RTR which had both a condition [less than three CMC] and a difficult mana cost). No longer would there be "cantrips" i.e one mana draw spells that offered some other benefit such as scrying or otherwise manipulating the top of your library, most draw spells would now be at least 3 mana even at sorcery speed. On top of this, certain colors would always receive very powerful effects while others would not. After RTR, white lost 4 mana wrath effects but Red still had 4 or 5 mana haste creatures with evasion. Green would start getting creatures like Thragtusk.

Dang, this brings me back. I got into Magic during Dark Ascension, I think just about when it was released. The first MTG product I ever bought was one of those intro decks, the Simic self-mill one with Ghoul Tree as the face card. I loved that big dumb tree. I remember suping that deck up, mostly by grabbing copies of the self-mill payoff creatures, and somehow swept FNM with the deck. I tried it again the next week and got utterly wrecked; so it goes. Good times.

So, immurwolf was really odd in regards to its interaction with other playable werewolves of the meta. The biggest issue is that the best werewolf was hands down huntmaster of the fells, which you actively wanted to flip back and forth, so a lord effect that actively prohibits that made the wolf on the outside looking in for its constructed run. It was okay in draft, but everything kinda just folded to spirits

If Fateful Hour was at like 10 life, would that solve the issue? Also, Avacyn Restored, the next set, I believe, kinda ruins the block with the LACK of transforming cards. Is that true, though?

Sounds interesting. But I’m wondering how that can be cohesive. From what I understand of yugioh sets, theres little to no thematic or visual cohesion in the sets.

It would be a bit harder for Yugioh sets. They have less story then mtg sets, and the ones that do have stories take place over years of product. And mechanics are less cohesive, usually just being some generic cards and then support for archtypes.

Fuuuu**, why don't you have all the channels somewhere at one place so I can just look through all of them instead of searching for "The Logs" which sends me to some 9 years dead music band..
