You can watch Magic and Bird play on the same team. 1992 Olympic Men's Basketball team. The team included Jordan, Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Robinson, Pippen, etc. They won Gold of course.... with their eyes closed lol!

Larry hardly played tho. he was always on his stomach stretching his back on the floor in front of the bench most of the time. That team was really all about Barkley scoring in garbage time to lead the team and every opposing team more concerned about getting photos with Magic than play defense on Magic.

The five positions on a team traditionally are center, power forward, small forward, shooting guard, and point guard. The center plays under the rim and gets the underneath shots, the power forward is often the main rebounder. The small forward is your main midrange player, can do little of everything, the shooting guard is your main outside player, and the point guard is the guy who sets it up and is the primary passer. Jordan was a shooting guard, Bird played both forward positions, and Magic was a point guard.

Top information there….. I know understand the positions!! And what they meant to Larry, Michael and Johnson so thanks for that Jason 👊👍🏻

Magic is 6’9, which is very tall and unusual for a Point Guard. Normal the Point Guards are the smallest most nimble players. Larry was 6’10 which is a good height for Small Forward which he is.

Larry & Magic played against each other for the NCAA (college) basketball in 1979 and entered the NBA the next season. From the get-go, Boston & LA Lakers were rivals for most of the '80s, including 3 direct match-ups in the NBA finals. The Lakers played a very entertaining fast-paced style of basketball which was referred to as "Showtime". Magic Johnson became and still is the most popular figure in Los Angeles - head and shoulders (figuratively and literally) above any Hollywood personality.

basically, the best player is not always the center. Michael Jordan is a guard. What happenned on the video, was on game five of the '80 finals championship game 5 the Lakers won at home taking a 3-2 series lead of best of seven. The center, "Kareem Abdul J." broke his ankle and couldn't play on it in game six in philadelphia. So Magic asked to start at the center position & ended up playing all of the positions in that game, scored 42 pts i thimk & they won the game, winning the championship 4 games to 2. He also, Magic was awarded the Finals MVP

Magic and Legend are forever tied together in the universe. You cannot assess the one without considering the other. Two sides of the same coin. They aren’t the same but they were forged in the same crucible. One isn’t “better” than the other. They’re both the best when measured together. They saved the NBA and that’s a fact.

I think it's great how he and Larry Bird are such close friends even then. Many with that kind of rivalry would all but hate each other. They instead acknowledged the skills and dedication of the other. I think he never wanted to retire. However, in that time so much of the stigma and fear of HIV was much worse. I'm guessing the protests were them at the time not wanting him to play because of his HIV status. He was diagnosed 32 years ago and as far as I'm aware is still in HIV status, which is remarkable and wonderful that it hasn't advanced past that stage.

Magic was listed at 6’9” but he was really 6’8.5”…according to legendary Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn…yeah, big difference, right? 🙄 Bird was a little taller. Magic was/is probably the greatest point guard of all time! I was fortunate enough to have watched and experienced the eighties rivalry between Bird and his Celtics against Magic and his Lakers….I’m a Lakers fan…..it was so good!

BP1, you weren't rubbish! Basketball is a skill game that not many master, you're in good company. Plus you really have to be physically coordinated, something lots of tall people don't tend to be. I don't mean that hateful, just saying. Magic is very giving to south LA, he does a LOT for that community! Magic and The Bird were an awesome rivalry to watch! 2 of the best ever, head to head, it was great. Loved this one Gentlemen!

In regards to the speed of basketball, it depends on the style of play. Some teams play a slower, methodical, half court style where players move around in set plays to score (Boston Celtics/Larry Bird). The Lakers preferred an up tempo style called "fast break". The strategy was to push the ball down court and score quickly before the other team could get in position to defend in the half court. The 80's style of basketball was beautiful to watch. By the way, you MUST WATCH LARRY BIRD'S PASSING VIDEO!!!!

The Reason The Lakers Were soo Dominant in The 1980's Was Because They would Run The Pants off of all The Other Teams With That Fast Style of Play it's Called " The Fast Break " Speed Speed SPEED opponents Could Not React , Because it was so Exciting and Entertaining That Style Got The Nickname " SHOWTIME "

Don’t get hung up on the name of the positions….your best player could be of any position….it’s about his talent level no matter what position he usually plays…..when Kareem went down, Magic was talented enough to essentially play all 5 positions in that championship game and lead the Lakers to the win…at age 20 in his rookie season!

Kareem was indeed in a Bruce Lee film. He was in Game of Death. Kareem is one of the best of all time. It’s very different to netball. In netball only some positions are allowed to shoot and stand in various zones. In basketball everyone can go anywhere and do anything. It’s ‘equal’ that way.. just like football (if you ignore the goalie).. in terms of the rules of the game.. it’s just that certain positions specialise is roles. The point guard is the ball handler who brings the ball up the court and dusted has it .. he will also tend to stand around the perimter in offensive situations.

@BritPopsReact I think you missed a key part of the story. Prior to the 1992 NBA season Magic abruptly retired from the sport because he tested positive for HIV, later that season the NBA fans still voted the newly retired Magic to play in that seasons All Star Game. So that appearance had more significance than most NBA All-Star games, Magic was still in his prime but had his career cut short so that All-Star game was potentially the last time we would see him play. It turned out he played in the Olympics and a few years later came back to the NBA, but that '92 All Star game is one of the most memorable moments in NBA history.

Ok Lakers Nation Here Los Angeles Lakers Fan since 1980 , There are about 7 Worthy Players In Consideration for The G.O.A.T The Greatest of All Time ,And Magic Is one of Them , He Came into The NBA in 1980 And in His First Year his Rookie Year He Catapulted The Lakers to Win The NBA Chanpionship ,VERY FEW ROOKIES Can Make That Claim , The Lakers Would Go to 8 of the 10 NBA Championships in the Decade of The 1980's Because of Magic ,The Lakers would Win 5 Championships in The 1980's , The Bigest Rivalry in American Professional Sports is The Lakers Vs The Boston Celtics which Larry Bird Played in , Only Yankees and Dodgers Match up Close With Baseball ,But The Biggest Is The NBA's Lakers vs Celtics ,all True Lakers Fans HATE BOSTON , I HATE BOSTON NO Love Whatsoever For Them and All Boston (Annoying) Fans Hate Los Angeles Lakers it is Imbedded in our DNA LoL So The Rivalry Between Larry Bird(Celtics) And Magic Johnson (LAKERS) Was Showcased in The 80's The Teams Met 3 Times in The Championship Series with The GREATEST Team (The LAKERS) Winning 2 of The 3 Meetings I have always Made The Arguement For Magic Johnson Being The GOAT and No One could Beat Me in a Debate But Now That LeBron Has become The Greatest Scorer of all Time with 38,000+ Points He will Probably End up Being The Goat he needs at least 1 more championship to Really Lock it in But at Least it will Be in a Lakers Uniform .
