I've always thought there was more going on with Luwin that is only hinted at. Almost like he's at Winterfell on purpose doing research. It says he's studied the higher mysteries and he likely knew Marwin. He has dragonglass arrowheads and knows a lot about North of the Wall. I think he alwasy wanted to know about the arcane but never encountered it and after he was shown it over and over with Bran and Rickon he might have started to believe his old teachings and wonder. The biggest mystery that blows my mind that no one EVER talks about is that he uses the last of his strength as he's dying to crawl to the Heart Tree. Why would he do this? Does he know more about the weirwoods than we thought?

If you unscramble the letters in "Maester Luwin" and then unscramble the letters in "Arthur Dayne" you will see that some of the letters are the same. Therefore, Maester Luwin is Rhaeghar Targaryen. Jokes aside, do we know that the Maesters even keep their birth names? They could be like the Pope and choose a new name when they become a Maester. Love the videos, always make me laugh!

We know that the Targaryen Maesters kept their given names, and Maester Aemon specifically says that they give up their house names. So presumably they *could* change their first name but I think we’re meant to understand that they usually don’t

IIRC Maester Lewin came North with Catelyn as he had helped her birth all her kids, suggesting that he was in Riverrun when Robb was born... doesn't change that we don't know where he's from, but I agree it's likely that the name similarities would put him in the far South for his origin

I’m so excited every time you guys post a video! I just wanted to note that Nymeros is not Quentin’s middle name. It’s actually an interesting mistake cause it shows how all the other houses drop it but the full house name is “House Nymeros Martell of Sunspear” like it’s literally a hyphenated house name from both sides of that founding marriage and they’ve kept the both names all these years. Other houses always drop the Nymeros but it’s part of the name still

He was an assistant maester at Riverrun and went up to Winterfell with Cat, seemingly without input from the Citadel. But that doesn’t answer where he’s from!

With the Rebellion in full swing, perhaps he just maintained contact in order to keep an eye on Catelyn during her pregnancy and got the A-Ok to remain after the war was over.

Grey Area has a theory that Rob’s father is really Brandon not Ned. That is why Catelyn’s father was so anxious for her to marry Ned immediately. Luwin helped her to obscure the birthdate when she gave birth at Riverrun.

@@DD-ok2ptThat's tinfoil and doesn't make sense. The reason they rushed the wedding was because Aerys chose to murder Ned's father and brother, instigating a war. Hoster Tully wanted the alliances secured before he sent his army to support Jon Arryn, Ned, and Robert. Otherwise, Hoster would get nothing in exchange for RISKING EVERYTHING to throw in with Robert.

@@Vmac1394 Not saying it was his only reason. However, it does explain Catelyn’s irrational fear of Jon Snow, the assumed son of Ned, usurping her son.

As he was dying Luwin dragged himself to the heart tree. I think he was intellectually sceptical but deep down felt differently. Maybe just hedging his bets though.

If you don't mind, I'm going to babble, and since I don't have encyclopedic knowledge of ASOIF, it's going to be a series of questions... Do we know all the ways in which people are recruited into study at the Citadel? If a noble house sends a scion to the Citadel, do they have to take him? If a low born youth is moved by a calling, will he be accepted? What is the criteria for acceptance at the Citadel, and what happens with those who are turned away? Does the Citadel ever proactively recruit people based on observed talents? Is the Citadel quite similar to the HOB&W? How do they decide who advances? What do they do with someone who gains certain protected knowledge, but then diverges from the program? What did Luwin do to earn the right to study higher mysteries in the first place? If there is an ongoing Citadel-based conspiracy (and why wouldn't there be, power loves maintaining itself), at what level will an acolyte be given that knowledge? Are all maesters assigned to politically important houses assumed to be aware of the conspiracy, and are their assignments necessarily based on the goals therein? Are all maesters also defacto educators of the noble children of their assigned house? Can a family reject a maester they simply don't like?

Maybe 'Luwin' is a hint of Dornish Targaryen connection like lemon tree in Bravos and Tyroshi girl in Watergarden.

13:12 sometimes GRRM leaves descriptions blank. Also Prince Luwin was an uncle to Doran and may have had an Andal mother. I have also put forward the case multiple times that an old bald Dornish person won’t look that different from an old bald Andal person who spent their life in the Sun. Wrinkles and Maesters robes can hide a lot

If Luwen is Lewyn, the purpose in the story might be to tip off Bran to the presence of hidden kingsguard in the north and above the wall (if you believe that theory. I don’t but like it’s a possibility). Like he goes back in time to see a R+L wedding, and see Luwen in armor, it would open doors to Mance = Arthur Dayne stuff or whatever. And Luwen passing info from winterfell to Mance could be how Mance knows so much about the goings on in the castle

I think that Luwin is perhaps a Strong bastard, or a long thought dead legitimate Strong. Look at the names in house Strong, Harwin and Bywin. They have the "win" endings and then there is Lucamore, Lyonel and Larys. All "L" names. The sixteen children of Lucamore Strong were all deemed bastards and ordered to bear the names Rivers, Waters, and Storm after being relocated to Harrenhal, Driftmark and STORMS END. Also, Robert Baratheon has 16 bastards as well. I don't think that is a coincidence. Jon Arryns deathbead statement "the seed is STRONG" takes on a new dimension when considering the possible Baratheon/Strong connection.

Pretty generic to say that Pycelle is at least LINKED to the lannisters if not a cousin, but decent name evidence is Myrcella/Pycelle. Both use a y and a cell, flimsy but better than nothing. Decided just now that he's a Castamere who made all sorts of vows of loyalty to Tywin to be spared from tangible threats, presumably after he was already a maester and had renounced all claims.

I think Maester Luwin was brought from the Vale during Cat and Ned's... And Jon and Lysas wedding to help Jon with his infertility, and thats why it was he who birthed all of Catelyn's children when she got preggers and not riverun's maester of coat hangers and Tansy tea maester Kym
