Madonna: What Happens When You Don’t Age “Gracefully”

Madonna has received criticism for her unwavering sexuality as she ages, ageism or desperation? likely both, but it’s the least surprising thing about Madonna’s career at this point. She famously said “don’t preach!” , and maybe it’s time we listen, given her continued success and longevity. Could Madonna be embracing the new normal?

Exactly. It's so easy for artists these days to jump unto the LGBT+ pandering train, but for Madonna to do so in the late 80s/90s was career suicide. It was the height of the AIDS crisis, when left and right politicians and so many others turned their backs on the gay community (including celebs who support them now), and when AIDS was still labelled "God's punishment", "gay cancer", etc. Madonna openly spoke out on behalf of gay people, advocating for safe sex and breaking down the myths of AIDS (e.g. people still thought you could get it from using the same bathroom, etc.) She often went to Mexico to get medication for AIDS patients. Above all, she said that AIDS patients should be treated with compassion, regardless of how they got infected. She didn't pander to the gays, she supported them. It's sad how so many in the queer community today make fun of her and diss her.

Madonna was hardly famous on the basis of her music alone. She amassed notoriety from CONSTANT public scandal, spectacle, feuds, controversy, sexuality, etc. The masses were more interested in seeing what she would do next rather than hearing what she would do next. Not saying these are even necessarily bad, but these are almost more responsible for making her a cultural icon/influence rather than her overall discography. This also perfectly explains why she hasn't released any noteworthy or popular music that younger generations are willing to care about. Expressing open sexuality isn't provocative anymore and shes continuing the attempt to use "controversy" as a crutch. When this fails, she then appears as somewhat of a spectacle to new or young audiences. Theres a reason why counterparts within the same generation (Kylie Minogue for example) who never relied as heavily on controversy, is able to maintain a career with new hit music that transcends generational divide and without the subsequent criticism.

“Aging gracefully” is just another dated, misogynistic phrase aimed at controlling women and shaming the ones who have the nerve to do what they want with their lives & not follow the pack. You will NEVER hear anyone using that saying for a man. Madonna has always done whatever the fuck she wanted with her life and always embraced self-care, edgy fashion & makeovers. Why should she change who she is just because total strangers find it abnormal or inappropriate? Suddenly, feminism is out the window. I also find it hilarious how no one bats an eye when pop stars in their 20s & 30s are filled with botox & fillers but when a 65 year old woman does it, it’s pathetic & desperate. Let’s not act like pop girlies like Ariana, Katy, Gaga or Beyoncé have never had any cosmetic work or beauty procedures. Madonna has just always been an easy target for bullying since the very beginning, because no matter how much people tried to humiliate and bring her down, she never budged and that still pisses them off. And that’s why the media keeps trying to push a very one-dimensional side of her. WAKE TF UP.

I was madonna for halloween when I was eight. A lot of little girls like me loved her back then--it tells you a lot. They've had different trajectories for one Cher was nowhere near as commercially successful as Madonna who dominated the charts across the globe at her peak and she did not overtly push sexuality in the same provocative way I.e. sex book. Cher was a much more centrist if not at times even conservative star for much of her career

Honest, I love you but will have to agree to disagree. Madonna can do whatever she wants. She is the blueprint for so many stars today who on day will get old too. She is a trend setter. She is setting the trend for an older pop star in the future. In the future Lady Gaga, Meg, Doja, Beyonce, Miley and Taylor plus more will be able to be 60 year old pop stars and still be sexy and we will be okay with it. No one will question it because Madonna took all the heat for it in the past. Being sexy is not only for the young. Plus I was a kid of the 90s. Madonna was BIG. For the MTV generation between Madonna, - and. Huge. If you grew up with Madonna you will understand. Madonna is still the queen of pop. Nice video

YES YES YES - Madonna has changed the course of history and fought for so many things. She has never been afraid to speak her mind and has been criticized relentlessly for her entire career. She is smart and involved in all of her work with a thorough artistic vision. She is a talent and above all has a huge heart and a tough exterior. I feel it took her almost passing away this past year to really get the world to connect with her which is so sad. Her Celebration Tour is so amazing and I cried the entire time I was there. At 65 she can still put on a show and you can see how happy she is to still be here.

i went to Madonna's Celebration Tour this year. as a shy and traumatized teen girl with serious body dysmorphia and self-acceptance issues as well as a long-time fan of Madonna, it was surreal seeing a 65 year old dance and sing perfectly on stage with makeup, multiple costume changes, bright (and hot) lights, and jet lag from her world tour. she is a motherfucking icon, like it or not. people are always going to say shit about her and while she may have learned to live with it through the years, i think that it is time that we as a collective society, should start to have discussions about ageism towards public figures, especially those who are overtly sexual.

I really hope that Madonna is still pushing the boundaries and playing up the new normal in the sense that women are allowed to age or be sexual just as men are. Your video description put it very well and wouldn’t it be ironic if we look back 20 years from now and realize Madonna was still pushing boundaries and pushing the norm forward just as she did her whole career

And even at 65 she's still making history. I love Madonna's music & artistry. I think she's an absolute legend & I love how so many artists today are collaborating & paying homage to her.

Sucks because I feel like a lot of the trust falls and support for people suffering with body dysmorphia or bad body image is only reserved to young or younger people. So much sympathy and understanding even though, objectively, the young are stilled considered in their prime in looks. Meanwhile those actually dealing with the existential and dissociative stress of visibly aging and feeling disconnected from the image of themselves they’ve grown attached to…are mocked. it becomes a mockery. A spectacle to gawk at. Sure, we try to flag them down with ‘aging is a blessing’ ‘just age gracefully.’ But it’s all so insincere. Platitudes. They really wanna say ‘please, phase out of society already, I don’t want to see your aged face. it’s a bummer and reminds me I’m next.’ We live on perpetual denial. I’ve seen all the unfiltered comments regarding women staying natural vs women getting enhancements. They both get dragged. I’ve also seen creators/public figures I really liked have an intrusive thought and say really ignorant and dismissive things out loud about older people and their own thoughts about their future aged self. Everyone is secretly repulsed and lying, it seems. It’s like how all those edgy kids joked about unaliving at 30, there’s truth in that. They may not do it, but they become mentally disengaged with life by then. It’s like a spiritual death.

Maybe the question should be, "why don't we let women age gracefully?" There's a ridiculous amount of pressure on women to stay forever young. An absolutely impossible feat. So if they try to keep up with the beauty standards they are trying too hard, and if they don't they have let themselves go. Please tell me how we are supposed to win this game set up for failure? This is why I don't subscribe to trends. I'll be 45 this year, and if someone doesn't like the fact I don't do Botox or whatever -so be it. But I completely understand why so many people, especially women, have cosmetic procedures. Imagine if we put that much time, energy, focus, money, and other resources towards educating ourselves, making the world a better place, having fun... But as a society, we have made it big business to be following whatever beauty trend happens to be on point on any given day. Women/People: the only way to win the game, is to not play it. Just do whatever GENUINELY works for YOU. You are the one you have to live with day in and day out ❤️🌷

Madonna is a veteran warrior queen who mastered the music industry for such a long time. I feel so blessed to see her in her most recent tour- the first ever time I ever saw her in the flesh after living a whole childhood seeing her through a screen. Not only did she made it okay for me to be gay in my teenager years but we both share a fate of surviving near death. It was fate for me to see her in person and seeing her at age 29 after surviving cancer at age 28 and after she survived near death fulfilled my 20s.

Idk, I suppose there is something to be said about growing with your audience. Pop musicians are generally always young, because their target audience is usually younger people (teens-20s). Young people want to see their peers or people just a little older (because pop is also aspirational). I can't help but find it really sad when people try to hold onto being overly sexy into middle age. You can still be absolutely stunning while being mature, classy and experienced. My husband's grandmother is in her 70s, and she's an objectively, beautiful woman. Her elegance, sense of style and bearing is what makes her beautiful. Being sexy isnt the only way to be physically attractive. And there is a sense of fundamental immaturity that comes with wanting attention by showing off as much of your body as possible. Hence why it can be offputting when older people (who should be more mature) do it.

The problem with Madonna is that the quality of her music peaked 20 years ago, and since then she has offered subpar albums, and she went from innovating and pushing pop music forward into chasing trends and seeking to do collabs with flavor of the week new artists to stay relevant, and her sexuality went from provocative and groundbreaking to desperate and embarassing. I used to love Madonna when I was little but I haven’t really liked her music since Confessions, it’s just not particularly good. Other female artists like Kylie Minogue and Mylene Farmer are still making good music and being sexy without coming across as desperate.

This comment says more about you and how you view older women than it does about Madonna herself. The fact that you don't like anything post Confessions is SUBJECTIVE and speaks to your own musical tastes. That shouldn't interfere with whether or not Madonna should continue making music. Regarding comparing her to other women, it is sexist and misogynistic. And you know it. But it is also even UNFAIR. Kylie's career is not in the least comparable to Madonna's. And you know that too.

Madonna was in the right place at the right time. Of course she was brilliant & the songs were too but in the British pop singles scene of 1983 I can’t think of her having any serious competition from other powerful & attractive or sexy front girls . Kate Bush & Debbie Harry had all but disappeared or weren’t managing big hit songs leaving Madge up against intentionally non traditional sexual or leftist Bananarama ,Annie Lennox ,Alana from Thompson Twins or Souxie Banshee . With the video explosion It was there for the taking .

Gotta hand it to Madonna, she is the hardest working woman in show biz. No shade intended but look at her contemporaries like Billy Joel and George Michael. They peaked creatively in about the same era as Madonna. But GM just stopped making new music. So did BJ. His last ablum was in early 90s and continues touring playing songs that are over 20 years old. It’s his choice and again I don’t look down on it. But I do look up to Madonna for putting herself out there. She could save herself a lot of criticism by settling into a habit of playing all the hits and just catering to Gen X nostalgia. But she is an artist and wants to continue pushing herself and the envelope.
