For starters, the industry caters to 13-21 yr olds. And like it or not, this group wants to listen to artists who they identify with. Top 40 artists are traditionally whoever is hot in that moment. Madonna broke stereotypes by sustaining top 40 relevance for well over two decades. That's relatively unprecedented to maintain that level of interest for that long. Madonna not having "hits" or charting singles does not have anything to do with the quality of her work, and with four decades of material under her belt, a legion of fans, and a legacy unlike any other womans in pop music, she shouldn't give a rip at this point what songs chart. She will continue to sell solely on the fact that she IS who she is. All that said, while Madame X songs bravely tackle some of todays' most relevant issues, Madonna's method has lost some of its... nuance. This video has no subtlety. There is no artistic interpretation of the lyrics. Take Like a Prayer. The overall song is message of love and finding hope in darkness. The video takes that message and tells a compelling story in a playful and artistic way. I'm not saying God Control doesn't have elements of art. I'm saying its brow-beating, its preachy, its even a little tacky. The song is fun enough, but that melodramatic piano intro with the mumbling... girl.... no. This is not her proudest moment in music.
